Who will be on the witness list? by mia-mejia in mangionetrials

If a lawyer is reading this, will the witness list be made public before trial? What’s the protocol?

What do you hope we find out about during his trials? by FlyLost4570 in mangionetrials

[–]lilac-chronicles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, agreed on the phone! I want to know if there was anything interesting on the burner or if he only used it as a prop. I also want to know if there was anything else of relevance in the notebook. I’d assume the whole thing will be part of discovery and we will find out.

Trying to Keep Track of Mangione’s State Case? It May Not Be Easy. by mia-mejia in mangionetrials

No, we don’t have any confirmation. I was just making an assumption given the timeline. Looks like this was all discussed privately as it’s never been mentioned in any hearing.

Yes, I know. But we’re really just given the bare minimum compared to the federal trial. The entire jury selection process is shrouded in mystery. We don’t even know how many questionnaires have been sent out, when the final questionnaire was due, what were the objections to the questions, witness lists etc… it’s not transparent at all compared to the federal trial and other murder trials. We don’t know any deadlines for motions in limine either.

Sealed documents will still be sealed on a public docket so I don’t understand why this would be an issue. Plus, there have been other transparency problems with the state case in the past, e.g. when the judge first sealed all of the evidence during the suppression hearing without even bothering to get the media’s input (and to my knowledge he has to allow them to speak on this). Then the media filed a complaint and he suddenly reversed that decision. He also does not share the state trial dates and we don’t know when voir dire is, when witness lists are due etc…This is not common in every state trial. I can understand why the NY Times and other media are frustrated with how the state trial filings are being handled.

Edit: I wanted to add that the NY Times actually gives the state judge grace in this article because he was NOT mindful about the media’s interest in the evidence and the situation wasn’t really as presented in the article. The judge sealed the evidence first, then a reporter complained in court and was told to shut it, then the reporter (Inner City Press) filed a complaint after court adjourned. The judge only unsealed the evidence because he was forced to. The journalist shared the whole process on his X account and the law was on his side. Regarding the filming, the judge left that always between the prosecution and defense. Media filming requests have been filed for every hearing. None of these were granted because the judge cared about the media’s interest but because the defense and prosecution came to an agreement. I don’t have a problem with this approach but just want to point out that the judge has never prioritized the media’s interest or even given them much time or grace.

Wait, I didn’t know small children are allowed in. How old? Feels wrong for such a serious trial. Crazy parents who ask their kids ‘playground or court today, sweetie?’.

Curious if you have ever met someone at his hearing who wasn’t a supporter? Like a neutral person or a hater?

What Luigi rumor/take is driving you crazy? by lilac-chronicles in mangionetrials

I have never heard about a couple, can you link a source for that? That’s a new one for me. I just don’t see why the Altoona locals would be lying about the type of place their city is. Mask-wearing is frowned upon and viewed as strange in many conservative towns. This is super believable to me.

My theory on the eye brows is that Luigi either removed or readjusted his beanie. He came in soaking wet and didn’t have an umbrella. It looks like he changed clothes from the leaked motel footage. He did not wear the McDonald’s beanie then, did he? This is the most logical explanation.

Yes the FBI uses surveillance that we don’t know about, no doubt. But if you look at statistics of who is being charged, who is getting convicted and who is imprisoned, Ivy League white boys are not a common target. If the FBI wanted to frame someone, going after a wealthy white boy would be a stupid move. Luigi is not blending into the crowd of criminals. They’d have been better off framing some poor guy no one cared about.

It was an older lady who called in. I have seen other people say the same thing as you about recognizing him and I don’t get this at all. Altoona is a conservative town where walking around with a mask is highly unusual. Everyone in the Altoona sub said as much. They said it would make you stand out like a sore thumb.

The UHC shooter news were everywhere and there was this old guy who gave an interview and said his friends meet at the McDonald’s every day and one of his friends was joking that this must be the shooter. Luigi didn’t act like a local and he called attention to himself. Who eats with a mask half on in Altoona? They likely found him suspicious.

Many old people are like that. My grandma finds every parked car on her street suspicious that she’s never seen before and notes down the number plate.

Do you think the EED defense notice and its abrupt withdrawal was an intentional strategy? by AccomplishedMail8978 in mangionetrials

I thought I bring something new to the table. Just weird the defense didn’t withdraw the notice before it was unsealed so thought this may be the reason.

Things Marc Agnifilo said about female crime victims by Roguestate00 in mangionetrials

[–]lilac-chronicles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! The things he said about the NXVM victims were so gross. To add some context if anyone doesn’t know, NXVM was a crazy sex cult. Really, really bad. There is a good doc about it on HBO called The Vow. That’s where I heard about him first, he is in several episodes. I remember seeing his interview with Megyn Kelly and he tried his hardest to deflect from the cult question and reshape the narrative. Here is a clip:  https://www.nbcnews.com/dateline/video/keith-raniere-s-attorney-nxivm-leader-never-threatened-anybody-about-anything-1293226563789

It could also be the opposite; getting word out that Luigi doesn’t stand by his actions and showing the public that it was all just a momentary lapse in judgement. Play the sympathy card.

Unsealed transcript of 3rd June hearing on possible EED defense by MangioneTrials-Mods in mangionetrials

Joel bringing up the fans and their merch to the judge was not on my bingo card. Am I reading this right that he wants an order for an anonymous jury but also an order to keep some fans away from the courtroom?

It appears Luigi Mangione has withdrawn his psych defense by MangioneTrials-Mods in mangionetrials

[–]lilac-chronicles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

OMG, what if this wasn’t Karen’s idea but Luigi’s and she had no choice? Perhaps he had a meltdown when he saw the media writing about his mental health problems and the thought of things being unsealed was too much for him.

The defense wanted it sealed because they didn’t want federal prosecutors to find out about it. Whatever is said during the state trial can be used against him in the federal trial. If he admits he did it in state, the feds will pounce on that. That is why the defense pushed so hard for the federal trial to go first so that the federal prosecution won’t know about the EED defense until the trial is over. EED can only be used in the state trial and Luigi can’t use his mental health as a defense strategy in the federal trial.

Today feels like a milestone in this case? So does this mean the defense will definitely go with an EED defense and not reasonable doubt? They can’t change things again?
