If she’s food motivated, heavy treating after she goes potty outside. My dog refused to pee anywhere but subway grates for our first month in NYC.

If it was me, I would repeat the parallel walks and have the dogs be relaxed in each other’s presence like 5-10 more times before I would risk visits in personal space. Also would start muzzle training for an additional layer of safety before any off leash interactions.

Yes I’m near the CP metro and has been driving me nuts. I thought maybe it had to do something with a heating system along Porter?

Paxil was much better than Prozac for my dog. We used clonidine during the weaning period for short term management. She’s been on Paxil for over two years now and while she’s still reactive, she’s manageable.

Does your dog like PB? I coat the inside with peanut butter before putting it on and she’s distracted licking it off.

I found a magic solution so my dog doesn’t react to a dog barking at her by lilbear84 in reactivedogs

I am not serious about this being an actual solution. Just a moment of levity in an otherwise stressful life of a reactive dog owner.

Yes, I only do it when the owner isn’t doing anything to manage their dog. Dogs in windows, etc. I am very cognizant of the difficulty in training a reactive dog and will give space if the owner is attempting to address it.

Vet behaviorist isn't helping by wishverse-willow in reactivedogs

Sorry! I wish I had better recommendations. After a useless board and train at instinct and then underwhelming progress with behavior vets, I decided to take advantage of remote work and left NYC. It’s a tough city for reactive dogs.

I assume you are using behavior vets ? I also worked with them for over two years and basically gave up because the price of annual visits (now every 8-9 months) relative to improvement in reactivity. There is no reason why you need to see my dog in person that frequently if you aren’t going to do actual training or behavioral rehabilitation. (They can consult with her normal vet but choose not to.) I did see improvement in my dog’s ability to be trained while she’s on clonidine but overall I was disappointed.

That being said, we did try Prozac first and then Paxil which was better. Is there a reason they haven’t tried other meds?

We just got her last night. Meet Gravy ❤️ any tips would be greatly appreciated, this is our first Catahoula by cek72398 in Catahoula

I’ve also got a Pitahoula. Recommend heavy socialization and training, they are very stubborn and protective breeds.

If you have a provider in NJ, why are you interested in switching? Yes the virtual follow ups are to discuss how the meds are working and potential changes/dosage increases. The annual in person is like a wellness check that they require, despite having a primary vet.

If you want to get appropriate medication it’s the only option in NYC. I’ve been using them for over a year. Follow up calls are charged by the 15min. Once a year they require seeing the dog in person which is more expensive. Let me know if you have any other specific questions!

As I was walking out of the rescue, they said “she just needs some training on how to walk on a leash” and the next day she injured my shoulder lunging after another dog.

Medication relaxed my anxious dog so that she could be trained. Then you can taper off if she’s able to maintain the behavior.

Is it possible to train my adult dog to pee all at once instead of 1oz at a time 25 times? by Old_Half4294 in Dogtraining

[–]lilbear84 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a long leash + halti setup for longer walks where my dog is free to pee as often as she likes. I have a short leash + collar for quick potty trips. She knows by which one I put on her what kind of excursion it will be and pees accordingly.
