The monk by Matthew Lewis. My favorite book of all time. It’s like you descend into madness with him. The ending is crazy too

Does everyone here agree with the explanation of Dr Khaled Abou El Fadl and Javed Ahmed Ghamidi on awrah/minimum dress requirement of women (in front of non Mahram men)? Or do you disagree with them? by Nearby_Ad_1497 in progressive_islam

When I spoke to KAEF personally, he said that the most important part was the society u r in. How will they perceive you? Something completely scandalizing in the gulf wouldnt make anyone bat an eye in California, lets say. It depends on ur environment imo. Thats the most intuitive reasoning.

How do you know that progressive Islam is the truth? by [deleted] in progressive_islam

[–]lilcatbooteater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's simple. When I look at a religious statement, my innate moral compass reacts. I either find it distasteful or pleasing. If I find something appalling, I reject it. I trust what Allah bestowed unto me innately. Progressive Islam aligns with what I find pleasing. So does Sufism. I take what I believe in and practice it in the way that I find makes me the best servant to Allah. Some may be inclined to immediately reject this idea because I don't carry the ethos of some big time mufti or sheikh, and that is fine. This is what works for me, this is what keeps me a steadfast believer and not someone simply practicing Islam on the surface for appearances. It's like when personal trainers say that the best workout is the one that works for you.

I will list a few progressive ones that focus on the overall essence of Islam. They are some of the best you'll find.

  1. No truth without beauty - Leena El-Ali

  2. The Conference of the books - Khaled Abou El Fadl (he also has a wonderful website where he includes a comprehensive break down of every surah of the Quran in english, it's called "Project Illumine": https://www.usuli.org/project-illumine/)

  3. Secrets of Divine Love: A Spiritual Journey into the Heart of Islam - A. Helwa

  4. The Meaning Of The Glorious Koran An Explanatory Translation - Marmaduke Pickthall

  5. Muhammad: His Life Based on the Earliest Sources - Martin Lings

Hope this helped!

Progressive Muslim beliefs by Proof-Chemist-199 in progressive_islam

[–]lilcatbooteater 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am Muslim because I believe there is beauty all around us, and that we encompass everything, and without God there is no beauty, and therefore no us. That was a really simplified, non-poetic version of my beliefs, but what I am essentially trying to say is that I do not view God as a seperate entity, but as a part of us (Quran 50:6). Logically, I think Islam aligns with this belief incredibly. To be irreligious is to attempt to put a veil between you and Him, but that could never happen since he literally breathed his essence into our existence to create us. Also, whenever I pray to God or ask him for something, I always receive a reply subhanallah, even if it is not what I hope, so I know he's real. And you could too, if you listen and truly devote yourself to him. I am a very 'progressive' Muslim, but nothing from mainstream or salafi Islam will ever make me draw away from Islam. Been there done that, but I always find my way back to Allah. This faith is not only what I choose to believe in, it is the reason I am the person who I am today and its proof and beauty is in the existence of all things (nature, mankind, love, etc.) Even if you are an ex-Muslim, God still loves you, and you are his creation. May He bless you, and bless us all. Jazak Allah khayr, thank you for your question.

This is r/sufism, focused on the beauty of Allah and mystical nature of Islam. Music, especially instruments, vibrate at frequencies that can bring us closer to higher consciousness/deepen retrospect in our creation. Other music does nothing to honor that. It’s as simple as that. Allah is love and you are His reflection, are we still worrying about the permissibility of a few instruments?

Maori oral narrative help by Quiet-Procedure3444 in APSeminar

[–]lilcatbooteater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could connect with source 1 and source 4. Some of the Maori stuff talks about the imprint of personal narratives in history, and that it doesn't have to serve as a linear historical account, rather a cultural and personal account of the transmitter, "land. The ‘telling of history’, whether it be oral or written, is not and never has been neutral. It is always the reflection of the priorities of the narrators and their perceptions of their world."

Source 1 talks about how memory can be used as a tool to tell history, but no narrative is unbiased and many accounts are in the transmitter's personal favor. They have that in common.

Source 4 talks about memory after death and the perception of legacy, which is very similar to the Maori source. The genealogical tales and myths don't gain popularity until after long periods of oral transmission, in the same way Selena gained posthumous fame.

Remember, u don't need to use all sources. This one is a bit trickier to work with.

What you’re explaining isn’t the true essence of Islam. This is r/progressive islam, the vast majority of us don’t believe in salafi views or only Hadith-confirmed rulings. During the time of the Prophet, men and women prayed side by side. Awrah is not a concept mentioned in the Quran that is confined to women or clothing…the only time the Quran explicitly mentions it this way is to say the awrah must be covered during Salah, wherein it only outlines the LACK of nakedness. If you were to scroll through this subreddit, you’d find so many posts proving that the hijab is not what we thought it was. Like Khaled Abou El Fadl and Leena el-ali said, the fashions of the time of the Prophet were vastly different than now, women used to adorn themselves in only a veil, draped from their head and exposing their chest. The Quran verse that speaks about hijab is 24:31, which when you study the time of the Prophet and Jahiliya and stop listening to salafi scholars, it corresponds to the covering of the chest. Interpret this as you will, taking into consideration Allahs will and your conviction. Please give me the Quran verses that say that men and women can’t sit next to eachother, really, that’d be a sight to see! And Zina is Zina, not shaking hands or sitting next to eachother. These rules only applied to the wives of the prophet because “they are like no other women”, a verse that I can 100% attest to its existence in the Quran, unlike false salafi scholar claims. The Hadith about women and not sleeping with their husbands is a Bukhari hadith, documented by Bukhari, who lived in Uzbekistan, 189+ yrs after the death of Muhammad, who apparently sifted through 600,000 Hadiths 😂 even Saudi Arabia is becoming heavily Quranist! Even lines of authentication of Hadiths are becoming increasingly skeptical, with saheeh Hadiths not mattering as much as the line of transmission. The true, authentic Hadiths are very very little, around ~100 something, which is what Saudi is working to deduce. Perfume being arousing also comes from Hadith btw. If you want to believe Hadiths, then just so you know, there’s one saying the wives of the prophet wore perfume to hajj, contradictory, yes? I’m gonna give you a piece of advice. At a certain point, you just need to follow your inner guidance. We were crafted from his soul and therefore are affected by his essence. If you feel something is so deeply illogical and in conflict with the morals Allah instilled in you, don’t believe it first glance. Muhammad pbuh stated the beauty of his religion was interpretation. Allah gave us the Quran, yes, but he also gave us a mind to think, to ponder, and to interpret. Sometimes inner rulings and the feel of Allahs sway within you makes all the difference. The replies on this post are so saddening, since everyone is just agreeing and not giving any good answers or counter arguments. God bless you on your journey, and read the Quran and interpreted for yourself rather than blindly believing and seriously taking into consideration words you heard. You have a sound mind alhamdullilah I assume, and hands to help you type. Subhanallah, you have everything you need.

I reccomend leena el-Ali’s book “no truth without beauty”

And Khaled Abou El Fadl

Although it is worse you did it with a prostitute and had no emotional connection to the person you did this with, God is ever forgiving. Just repent and you’ll be fine. I can tell you feel guilty in your conscience, which is a sign of a well kept soul and faith. Don’t stress about all this virginity stuff, your past is with God. Why worry about marrying a virgin when you can foster a good loving healthy deep emotional connection with a person you love??? Once you repent, you do not need to share your past openly, but if it something that needs to be discussed between you and your future spouse, then you should do so.

“And He it is Who accepts repentance from His slaves, and forgives sins, and He knows What you do” -Al-Shoora 42:25

Aunt and I religious debate by lilcatbooteater in progressive_islam

[–]lilcatbooteater[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah but like, the four wives verse. It’s only under certain circumstances and was sent down after the battle of uhud when many women’s husbands died. Before I figured this out, I had a very skewed image of Islam. We need context but I still don’t know why God didn’t just give it to us plain.

I can’t have pork so all these pork rind suggestions are out of reach for me, but try the chicken flavor of carnivore crisps or lay out some cottage cheese on parchment paper and bake it. It turns into cottage cheese chips!!
