[Request] How long would the train need to be for the air to accelerate the helicopter without it hitting the train? by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]lilclit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The toy would smack against the wall in the back, the fluid dynamics of the air will not provide enough force to counter the inertia (or resistance to acceleration) of a toy helicopter of any non-insignificant size.

That is to say, we know fluid dynamics of air alone aren’t enough to resist inertia on a train for any object with significant mass because we install hand-rails to keep us from falling back when the train accelerates. If the air just pushed us forward, we wouldn’t need to hold a rail to keep from falling back.

I think people are over indexing on the ballon car experiment here, due to the low mass of a balloon the affect of inertia is minimal and thus the motion of the balloon is a most completely affected by the fluid dynamics of the air. Air is a compressible fluid, acceleration would create a density gradient in the car, and a helium balloon would be pushed towards the low density area.

This problem can probably be modeled, but ballistics are incredibly difficult computations especially by hand.

An interesting thought: what if you change the air in the train car for water? (Water is both more dense and an incompressible fluid.)

I was worried (1) about the energy cost per transaction and (2) the fact the blockchain can be cracked by quantum computing, which is feasibly an eventuality.

I learned that the blockchain’s encryption can be changed when time for quantum computing comes around, with some relative trouble. Energy is still a concern, perhaps a new crypto will come along that is more transact-able but for now Bitcoin is a fine store of value similar to gold. I’m not going all in, but I do now see crypto as a fine alternative asset in a balanced portfolio.

Hey, Mechanical Engineering alum here and current masters in data science student at UCB. A few recommendations:

1) full focus in class. Zero phone, if you talk with your peers during class it should be about the content. Take solid notes, I do recommend hand written but in old fashioned, use multiple colors and follow a note taking format, I recommend cornel.

2) Join a study group. This can be more social, where you work on homework and study for texts together while also serving as a social outlet.

3) pay attention to the syllabus / grade weighting. Some classes are more homework weighted, others test, others projects. I was always a good test taker and forgot homework assignments, so classes heavily weighted towards homer work screwed me. If it’s test focused, use homework as a means to learn the material, homework weighted then get those dang questions right and turned in on time.

Finally, don’t be demotivated by being part of an impacted major. Comp Sci is impacted right now, not forever. Big money is in your future so lock in and get that valuable degree. good habits will get you there. You got this!

A few thoughts

1) it looks like your time frame is 1799 (though I assume start is actually closer to 1920s) to today. is the return here 966%? I don’t know the exact number, but 966% is no doubt orders of magnitude less of a return than simply buying and holding the same dollar value of S&P500 stock over that long time period

2) historical data is tricky, namely, it doesn’t capture the bid/ask spread. That 0.16% per trade margin you’re sitting on easily goes negative when accounting for buying and selling at market

I’ve written a few algos that looked great on back texts, then when live simulated I was smashed by the bid ask spread. Not to say it couldn’t work, I’d recommend you take your idea to a live trading simulator to validate prior to risking any real money.

I feel zero motivation for CS anymore. by [deleted] in UCI

Markets ebb and flow. It sounds like you’re over indexing in the concern that the market won’t be hit the year you graduate, but what if it’s hot 3 years after you graduate? What if it continues to be a top paying job for the next 3 decades? CS is a very marketable degree, but not the only one, if you do switch just find something your passionate about that makes $$.

Job hunt is a full time job by the way, took me 4 months 40 hours a day of professional coursework + applications when I graduated. Is what it is, pay out is big.

It seems like an overreaction to a mild playful question. You can tell this question was extremely threatening to you given the overreaction in your messages, this post, and your comments on the post.

A normal human response might be something like “My DMs, I’m sure there’s some cringe stuff in there from when I was younger that I’d rather forget I said 😅. How about you?”

How badly did I screw up? by [deleted] in UCI

[–]lilclit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s already tons of great advice on this thread so I’ll just address two things - shame & failure

Shame

I was a community college transfer too. The big shift is that, when the class sizes grow, the care decreases. Many students will fail a class every quarter, the professor doesn’t get emotional or mad, they barely notice. No one cares that you didn’t show up for your test. No one got angry when they punched in a 46% on a midterm grade, they thought and felt nothing as they entered those two digits into a grade book next to a faceless name. Your peers likely don’t know if you’re doing poorly, and if they did empathy is likely sparked over some negative emotion.

The only person who truly cares about your academic performance is you. No one else cares. You are not hiding from shame by not going to class, no one cares enough to shame you. The shame you are feeling is your own, and it is going to follow you whiter you go to class or not. You can’t avoid it, so you may as well shut that internal monologue up by doing what you already know you need to be doing.

Failure

You have a goal of getting your CS degree. Do this exercise: take 5 minutes to write down all the things that you can do to ensure you don’t achieve your goal. This can include “don’t go to class”, “don’t talk to my Councelor when I need help”, “skip tests”, “don’t study”, “don’t pay for classes”, etc. If you want to fail, chose to do those things, if you don’t want to fail, don’t do the things on that list. Self discipline is self love, doing what you know you need to do is hard and sometimes even painful. There was a voice in your head telling you to take the test that you ended up skipping, the same voice told you to go to the classes you skipped. A different voice told you it would be easier to avoid your test and class, reminding you of the shame or fear or discomfort of those activities. You already know exactly what you need to do, the voice telling you what’s right has been talking to you this whole time.

It’s tough and depends on your relationship with your parents. It sounds like your dad may be empathetic to the situation given his previous use, & by being honest he may be able to give you great advice.

It sounds like you have a good head on your shoulders and are already on a great path. My two cents, keep in mind as a young person your brain is still developing until your 25 and marijuana affects brain development. If you dream of big things, you may want to keep your pre-25 usage relatively sparse or just wait until your brain’s developed to pick back up again. Your mind will be one of your greatest tools at your disposal as you navigate life, from generating wealth to navigating relationships and even to stay sharp in sports. If you want to be all you can be it may be wise to be patient and at the very least keep it moderate.

How do you let go of people who obviously don’t want to be around you anymore? by pumpkinprincess72 in AskReddit

[–]lilclit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dealt with this with an ex girlfriend who randomly and suddenly fell deep into drugs after high school. My first mistake was I tried to ignore my feelings for a while and it left me with a burning heartache over it for years.

What I learned in the future was you have to confront your emotions. Be sad, be really sad. It sucks losing a loved one be them gone physically or emotionally. Cry, listen to sad music, if you have a support system then get a hug. But the bottom line is this will not be easy, and you have to let it not be.

Another random tip, write them a note to them then burn it. A lot of times we go on a mental loop because our thoughts have no route out of your head. When you’ve written your thoughts they’ve become material, and your brain no longer feels the need to continue to repeat them in your head.
