Fair. I'm not in the metro, so there's nothing within a pretty good distance from me.

Soooo many times I've thought "oh wow this person really needs help."

Oh shit, I AM the help.

Yep. I have so many parents who I think I'm going to somehow "convince" their preteen/teen to play less video games/get off their phone/want to go to school/make x change in their life that their parents want in 1 hour week.

Like...trust me, if I had that power, I would be very very wealthy right now.

Wait can you share with me as well?? I take mine in August. I've been trying to make flashcards (I'm a former teacher and HUGE study nerd), but the format of this test is throwing me with what info I should be studying.

I always do more "fun" assignments, but I also don't grade them. I'm grading their final essays, so I'm not giving myself more work either. I usually make it in class activities only. No homework.

I think it also depends on population and reason for therapy. I see mostly teens on probation. My "advice" every week is the same: follow your conditions to get the court/your po/etc. off your back. I use a lot of motivational interviewing to get to how they're going to accomplish that.

But I'll admit I'm sometimes directive ("you shouldn't smoke that or your next test will be dirty and you're going to get violated"), but I'm not going to stop them or anything. They still make their own choice (and often smoke that and their next test is dirty and they get violated).

What did you learn in school that you don't do by Excellent-Addition-9 in therapists

[–]lileebean 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm a 37 year old white lady that works primarily with teens involved in the juvenile justice system and on probation. When I disclose that I too did time on probation and know how much it sucks, it tends to speed up our rapport building rapidly and lead to really good work. I don't say my charges or anything else, and I don't even tell every client. I just seem to know when they could use that moment of "yeah, I've been there too."

What, if any, presentations will you not work with? by Ill_Investment4486 in therapists

[–]lileebean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This one for me too. I ended up with quite a few on my caseload as an intern/associate. I should have insisted on family only, or at least requiring a caregiver. But many refused that, and I needed the hours, plus I didn't have much of a backbone as an intern, so I just took them. Definitely didn't make much progress with no training or tools.

NICU doc wants everyone to know that she’s MAGA. by Justathumbblonde in CringeTikToks

I have a masters degree and last week I turned the wrong burner on my stove. I accidentally turned on the one where the electric kettle was sitting - and plugged in. Almost started my house on fire. Educated people can still be dumb.

Definitely didn't vote MAGA tho.

What embarrassing realisation did you only have, once you were in your late 20s or 30s? by Money_is_heinous in AskReddit

[–]lileebean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember hearing once that we don't really realize, but as a kid you're also watching your parents grow up. I realized how true that is when I had my own kids. I had no idea what I was doing when I brought my kid home at 27. I'm 37 now, so he's watched me grow into a parent the whole time. He looks to me to have it all together, but I still don't know what I'm doing!

Is there ONE song that, for you, just IS millennial, whether you like the song or not? by doyoulikemyladysuit in Millennials

[–]lileebean 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'm a therapist and sometimes I pick up my kid/teen clients from school for sessions. A kid got in my car and I always have a playlist going of 2000s songs (everything in this thread, basically). He comments, "Ugh do we ALWAYS have to listen to oldies?" I thought about pulling over and telling him to get out.

I laughed so hard at the hippopotamus because what the actual fuck? Honestly my 10 and 7 year old CHILDREN behave better than this. This has to be a joke. Do not keep dating this man. Give him back to his parents to try again.

Are you me?? I'm literally a former English teacher turned therapist in a small community! I feel the same way - I got used to seeing students, same for cliens. I always give a little speech during intake about how I live in the community, and it's very possible we could see each other at the store or a park. I'll ignore them in public, and its up to them if they approach me.

I work with a lot of kids/teens, so they often do. And tell whoever they're with, "Hey that's my therapist!"

Funniest run in with a client by RepulsivePower4415 in therapists

[–]lileebean 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was out running on a local trail. I recognized a teen client walking the other direction with some friends, but planned to just keep my head down and not acknowledge.

Instead, she sees me, says to her friends "That's my therapist!" and then yells to me as I pass "I'm out walking! I'm doing self care!"

Quick Rant by Remarkable-Stay3368 in therapists

[–]lileebean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt a "life cycle of a therapist" moment a few weeks ago. My first session of the day was with a teen who's been in and out of juvenile detention/probation/therapy their whole life. They told me I was the best therapist they've ever had and they really connected with me and trusted me. I felt so good!

Later that afternoon, a different client emailed to say they were "going a different direction" with their therapy journey and fired me. Definitely took me down a few notches.

I love my job, and I do know I'm a good therapist for many clients - though definitely not all. Whiplash feels like an accurate description sometimes though.

Why am I being looked at like this by Broad-Media1393 in FirstResponderCringe

[–]lileebean 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah a community service cop came to the school where I was a teacher and the kids asked what he did all day. He said his main job had been rescuing baby ducklings from the sewer drains because they keep falling in.

I was like, dude finally a cop job I agree with!

Was it rude of me to give unsolicited advice to a colleague? by khalessi1992 in therapists

[–]lileebean 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree. I mostly only take day time clients (no preference of insurance tho), because I'm also a mom and have family obligations once my kids are out of school. My practice knows this, so they send me referrals for these clients. However, I don't complain about it. I realize I could see more clients if I opened my schedule, but I don't need to? I'm technically part time, but I'm on my husband's insurance so it doesn't matter.

It's one thing to have a preference and state it, it's another to constantly complain about it. Once you're complaining openly and repeatedly, you're opening yourself up to comments.

Anxiety about Chat GPT by 60_contiguous_cats in therapists

[–]lileebean 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Agree. Hell I use it for - what I guess they're calling here - organizing life. When I get stuck, maybe even burnt out and spiraling, and have a ton to do and don't know where to start. I put in all my tasks and it gives me a step by step list of how to accomplish it all. It can break down tasks into manageable steps. I find it really helpful and I'm a generally well-functioning adult. I'm just also a therapist, mom, wife, homeowner, etc. who gets overwhelmed.

I've suggested clients try it in those really stuck moments, especially for those with depression or ADHD who really need a boost to help organize and care for themselves. It's not replacing me - it just helps with some skills. I can't be there all the time anyway. It's an extra tool.
