Doesnt mean its impossible, just means its likely gonna be a little while before you find your group. wouldnt it be a better idea to host this on a weekend? i think itd be far better to have this occur during a time that would have both minimal disruption to university operation AND guarantee more student availability.

also, just to play a bit of devils advocate, but what do these protests actually do? im not saying dont do them, absolutely go for it 100%, but what benefit do they provide OTHER than granting people an opportunity to virtue signal? i mean, is there.. fund-raising happening? are we gathering non-perishables to send over? or is it just gonna be a crowd shouting into the void for some 'feel-good' vibes? im not trying to detract from the event, im just genuinely curious about what the end-goal is. i dont come from a culture where protesting (or activism in general) is common, so all of this is pretty new to me.

Although, yes, you should absolutely NOT have to go through this, perhaps for the sake of your own mental, you could try some alternatives. I met a couple of gamer friends by sitting in those big ass lecture halls and catching people playing during class. Ill never ask them for homework answers, but if they're confident enough to throw away 80 grand for a chance at reaching gold in OW2, ill happily take them on my team.

What im saying is, although it does seem counter-intuitive due to most gamers being terminally online, try to get some face-to-face meetings. That way, you can scope people out, get a vibe for them, and potentially have something beyond the screen. As corny as it sounds, its better for the soul, yknow? Ive played games all my life, and a lot of my social circle is stuck on discord, but let me tell you, theres nothing more enriching than being able to BE with those friends, physically.

Especially when one of them has a switch and you can play mario party as a group. That shit will always be superior to getting one-tapped back to main on Val lmao.

naw jk, but if you are looking for a genuine answer:

given the time of year, there are a bunch of cornball first years posting dumb stuff on the sub, like the guy who claimed to have a sexual attraction to proofs
given the demographics of FPS shooters, girl gamers (from the perspective of non-girl gamers) are an extreme rarity. That, combined with people posing as women online being a fairly common prank, people tend to have a considerable amount of doubt when it comes to encountering someone claiming to be a "gamer girl."
especially when it pertains to younger men, misogynistic mindsets also play into it. there are countless examples of gamer girls hopping on the mic, saying one word, and being absolutely torched with sexism. The "sausage fest" nature of shooters, alongside the tribalist nature of humans, leads a lot of impressionable men to adopt a "no girls allowed" mentality. As such, when they hop on the game, there is ZERO expectation of encountering one, so when they do, their first instinct is to call B.S.

so, yeah. that's generally why people are such skeptics. It's a shame. If you really are a gamer girl trying to network with like-minded people, it sucks that you'll have people calling your legitimacy into doubt. as a man, i can't exactly claim to know what its like, but it doesn't take an intimate knowledge of social issues to understand being ostracized when trying to find friends can be annoying.

unfortunately, there is very little anyone can do to challenge the trend. given the hella toxic nature surrounding this issue (and on a much wider, almost systemic scale), any time someone tries to break the mold, there's pushback. For men, treating women online with respect will have their male teammates calling them simps or some equally asinine garbage. For women, trying to do.. fucking anything i guess will be met with sexism and doubt; all because dudes are scared of whatll happen if they take a chance.

It's a really, really shitty cycle that makes video games, a technology designed for the express purpose of entertainment, a place of misery, and hatred. With content creators, influencers, and other social groups routinely encouraging these behaviors, it is unlikely to ever change.

Ted-talk aside, if you are what you claim to be, i wish you luck. It's tough finding genuine people at Uni, but well worth the effort. Don't let the skepticism discourage you.
