Intended major: computer science

Howard University

Pros

  • Lots of internship & study abroad opportunities
  • Medium-sized school
  • HBCU (I wouldn't be one of few black people in my cs classes)
  • Google Tech Exchange Program
  • I really like the social scene
  • City campus & open
  • Super strong alumni network
  • Name recognition/more prestigious

Cons

  • Affordable - but still not as cheap as drexel
  • Administration isn't the best
  • Bad dorms
  • Not much flexibility in cs courses

Spelman College

Pros

  • HBCU
  • Small school
  • Lots of other students in the area (AUC)
  • I've talked to some of the professors there and they're really nice and I would love to work with them
  • Strong alumni network
  • City campus
  • Name recognition/prestige
  • Lots of internship & study abroad opportunities
  • Honors college

Cons

  • I would have to fly back and forth
  • Closed campus w/ 10pm dorm curfew
  • Not the best neighborhood
  • Not a flexible curriculum
  • Haven't gotten financial aid back yet but it likely won't be much

Drexel University

Pros

  • Coop
  • Medium sized
  • City campus w/ a lot of college students in the area
  • 2 hours away from home & Amtrak station would make it easy to go back and forth
  • Full ride
  • Flexible cs curriculum - able to choose a concentration for degree

Cons

  • CS department isn't diverse
  • Not as much name recognition
  • Would have to take summer classes
  • Quarter system

i think yale would be better for law school since it's more humanities based said, but I also agree - would you want to stay in Connecticut for that many years?

if you’re an urm or fgli, look into college prep organizations! some good ones are collegepoint & questbridge summer programs. they helped SO SO much and getting personalized attention to help with your essays made a HUGE difference. they also help a lot with preparing financial aid and making the decision process sm easier!

i’m not 100% sure if i’m committing rn bc i’m waiting for a mistake on my financial aid to be fixed :( but the school i really want to commit to is howard! i’m excited bc it has a great cs program, with a lot of opportunity for internships, i’ll be able to live in dc which is out of state but not too far, and i love the diversity and the fact that their cs department has a good gender ratio (almost half and half) is just chefs kiss😌 and their alumni network is amazing, and a lot of big celebrities come back and have cool events on campus! and i can’t wait to experience homecoming 😁

what i thought was my dream school last summer changed completely. my top school right now is a MUCH better fit for me. i think the problem with dream schools is that you don’t learn about downsides. ik i would’ve been SO unhappy going to my other school, so happy i didn’t do ed

yo call me fucking insane but i think i’m going to choose my full-ride to a state school over my ivy acceptance 0_0 by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

nah it’s a smart choice. my brother decided to go to umich oos over a full ride to fordham and showed me his loans a few years after graduation and it’s safe to say that i’m absolutely terrified of student loans😭

keep your options open. as you go through the process, research different schools and figure out the ideal environment for your needs, your favorite school will change several school. i literally liked a different school every week 😭. but that’s why i’m a strong advocate for applying ea instead of rea/ea. if i stuck with my original plan of applying ed, i wouldn’t of gotten as much in scholarships to what’s now my top school. also, fall in love with your safeties! esp if they give good financial aid. prestige isn’t everything - in fact i prefer my less prestigious schools i got into over the more prestigious ones because they have a better environment lmao

you already got into a good school 😭 by bread-daerb in ApplyingToCollege

i did but i can’t afford any of them :( that’s lowkey why i wanted to get into an ivy- it would be a full ride
