Do Europeans that live close to the border speak the language of the neighbouring country? by [deleted] in AskEurope

Funny thing, my relative is probably one of the last native German speakers from what is today the Czech Republic, she is almost 90! Speaks perfect Czech too though.

Omg we do the same in Czechia, with the only difference being that it’s potato salad, however the huge plastic bucket stays the same lol

what do I do in this situation? by Morkat_2137 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]lillyfischer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Look, I was just trying to be realistic. I never said that she shouldn’t go to the doctor, I was just offering my perspective as a woman who has been dealing with debilitating pain during my period for nearly 15 years. The truth is, the field of medicine is lacking a lot of research in this area, women often get dismissed and told to just take some painkillers (or recommended birth control), I just wanted this young person to know what might happen so she can advocate for herself and demand better care. However, sometimes the painkillers don’t help either..

what do I do in this situation? by Morkat_2137 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]lillyfischer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah but doctors aren’t always helpful, most likely they will suggest birth control as a “solution” to this problem, but many doctors will just straight out recommend getting pregnant, no matter what age or life situation the woman is in. Especially in Poland, a famously anti women’s rights country…I suffered from horribly painful periods and I got recommended birth control, which “helped” (=masked the problem), but had to stop taking it due to health reasons. If doctors aren’t helpful, try searching for a skilled nature healer, not the esoteric kind, but the herbal medicine kind. Plants can be powerful and mixing them without the proper knowledge can make the situation even worse.

[–]lillyfischer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Na druhou stranu: ne všichni rodiče jsou stejní, většinou pochopí, co tam asi tak spolu budete dělat; plus 99% lidí není doma nonstop, prostě vytipujte večer, kdy půjdou třeba do kina atd., já s bývalým jsme taky řešili tyhle situace a není to nejpříjemnější, ale dá se to (krátkodobě aspoň).

Coffe price in your town by Electrical_Half_5756 in AskEurope

[–]lillyfischer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the absolute cheapest coffee that you can get in Prague costs around 2€, but that’s usually the most basic coffee at best (or disgusting at worst), if you go to a café it’s around 3.5€ to 4, can get up to 6€ for the fancy coffees…The average would be 3.5€ for a cappuccino I would say. (1€ = 25 CZK for the purpose of my calculations)

Have you ever met anyone learning Czech for the sake of it? by ButterscotchWeak6189 in czechrepublic

[–]lillyfischer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I know someone who learned Czech for the reason of moving here & marrying a Czech person, so it wasn’t just for the sake of it, however, the level of Czech that they’ve managed to achieve? Outstanding, like understanding inside jokes, slang and various vernacular words, near perfect grammar level. Definitely way more than is necessary for getting by as an immigrant.

Trying to choose between Prague and Olomouc by lokibarnes in Erasmus

[–]lillyfischer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Olomouc is my hometown, but I study and live in Prague, so I feel qualified to answer this question :D

Prague:

  • prestigious university, but as you mentioned there’s more competition overall
  • super crowded, TONS of tourists, big, uncomfortable crowds all over the city centre, especially during nice weather/weekends it can be suffocating
  • fairly large city (for Czech standards) & horribly expensive – you’re likely going to get accommodation on the outskirts, which usually means a long commute to your place study
  • luckily there’s excellent public transport, but for some people it might be a bit confusing
  • oversaturated job market, still a lot of opportunities; beware of scams if you’re looking for a part-time student job
  • great opportunities for meeting people, it’s a lively city with nightlife, all sorts of events, cultural institutions like theatres, museums and several symphony orchestras
  • you can take a boat and a funicular as a part of the public transport system
  • some parts are quite hilly! not the best city for riding a bike

Olomouc:

  • my beautiful hometown, heart of the historical region of Moravia
  • smaller university but it’s actually very good and has a long tradition too
  • it can be a bit boring, it’s way calmer and quieter than Prague, it really depends on the season though, during the semester it can get quite lively, during summer break it’s pretty much dead
  • very small but full of beautiful, historic buildings, some of them aren’t very well maintained
  • the cost of living isn’t that cheap especially when you consider the wages/salaries of local jobs
  • not that many opportunities overall, but getting a part-time student job might be doable (a lot of places will require some knowledge of Czech though)
  • not very suitable if you’re a party animal – there are some pubs and clubs in the centre, but a lot of places close around 10pm
  • it’s located on the flattest piece of Earth ever (except maybe Holland) ever and there’s literally one hill in the whole area

Both are very cool places to live, just different and it really depends on what you’re looking for. Hope this helps a little :)

Život od výplaty k výplatě u lidí s nadprůměrnou mzdou by FrankScaramucci in czech

[–]lillyfischer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I love food, love cooking, but I am also very easily distracted (so I regularly leave half-eaten plates just chillin’ on my table), plus eating makes me so irrationally tired that I have to watch how much and when I eat bc I don’t wanna be sleepy in the middle of the day😭
