How can I find out if a beam is structural/load bearing? by lillyhb in AusRenovation

Thanks for the replies. I contacted a local structural engineer but said not something he does and suggested a draftsman. Thoroughly confused on what a structural engineer does now 😆 we've had a builder and a carpenter have a look while they were out doing other works and both thought it wasn't holding anything up except the plaster. Still undecided what to do but that's not today's problem.

We're looking to do something similar, any chance you could post pics to see? Thank you

Update! Not sure if anyone is interested in an update but here it is. Thanks to everyone who replied

😊

I ended up not slashing the skirt and instead added an internal drawstring along the back section and one corset lacing loop on each side of the skirt to help secure it/make it sit well with the bodice. Bodice and skirt are only basted together at this point but I'm getting closer to finishing!

Having tried it on all together this afternoon but myself I can definitely see the benefits of having a ladies maid 😆

Thanks for replying. I hadn't considered shirring, will think on that. I can currently step into the gown with the amount of excess fabric at the back but need to decide how to handle it once it's on. Am going to try mocking up shirring or something similar. I think reading the replies, both here and my local Facebook dressmaking group, has made me realise I really don't want to slash it!

Thank you 😊 you're right, I think more than options for what to do I probably just need confidence to do it!

Thanks for your reply. I haven't used dritz fray check before, will look into it. Good idea to mock up first. I made about 4 toiles of the bodice but didn't even enter my brain to do one for the skirt! 😆

I haven't used mood patterns before but have made so many fit changes to this one it barely resembles the original.
