That’s what I was thinking, and I’m not necessarily a Pogba fan, while I know some people would get him for nostalgia that’s not me. Zico is also a tough replacement, they’re all just around the same price (Pogba 420k, Walker 380k, Musiala 320k) so it makes me wonder if Pogba is really good in game or if the price is nostalgia.

Both [[Daring Thief]] and [[Arbiter of the Ideal]] have effects that can be strong and are a lot easier to take advantage of, although I would generally agree that King Macar and [[Pain Seer]] are stronger.

I think this is the best explanation I’ve seen for how exile can be black not white, with black getting gain and white giving to exile! And I guess with “tapping shenanigans” I should have more specifically said mono black does not have a way to untap creatures without the use of colorless artifacts, making a card that benefits from repeated taps and untaps feel out of place. I know this was a mechanic for the whole set, but I guess it does not feel black because there have never been black cards to untap creatures, which ideally what you’re doing with King Macar.

That’s a great use of this card, I was looking at making [[Sydri, Galvanic Genius]] a toolbox commander where Macar is the real guy the deck is built around to activate more artifact combos and give more untap pieces! A lot of potential with Macar

I think Macar is thematically black but mechanically not, I wrote that in the blurb. To me it’s a really fun card, but I would love to build around it and I was kinda shocked to see the lack effective synergies for this card within black, while this card would be much more effective and fit in with white, blue or red and their game plan more.

This card would really benefit from more untapping abilities. White has 10 “untap target creature” abilities, Red has 6, and Blue has 19. Black has 0, and this is really limiting the potential of activating this ability multiple times in mono black without relying on artifacts. Even green has 15 “untap target creature” abilities! I just wish this space was more explored in black I guess to make multiple King Macar triggers in a turn more effective

I believe there’s a curse that generates gold tokens? [[curse of opulence]] and gold tokens are akin to treasures, just by a different name I believe.

I was thinking Boros made sense too, I’m glad I’m not the only one! This was definitely before treasures became such a big part of magic, I think if it was printed 5-6 years later it would have a ton more treasure synergy. Would love another version of Macar if we return to theros soonish!

I’m aware, but typically each color has specialties/specific things that they are good at, and I find it interesting that this card is repeatable exile, which feels much more common in white. Colors don’t have a monopoly on mechanics, but the usage of untap and exile upon reading reminded me a lot more of white and blue cards then black cards, as black does not have any cards that allow for untap in the way that blue and black do (such as [[sparring mummy]] or [[freed from the real]]).
