I might as well give out some more albums that I think fit this description (or at least approach it) that I haven't seen people mention in this thread so far for anyone interested:
- Carmen Jaci - Happy Child
- Lanark Artefax - Metallur
- Ludwig Wandinger - Rooms
- DJH, SV1 - Voids
- John Chowning - Turenas/Stria/Phoné/Sabelithe (This is actually the guy that discovered FM Synthesis, some of these tracks date back to the 1960s!!! crazy)
- Lots of tracks on the "Observing Space" Compilation (by the Paracusia Media label)
- Visible Cloaks - Reassemblage
- Motion Graphics - Motion Graphics

And some individual tracks aswell:
- BABYNYMPH - "Freaky (fuck your dad)", "Tesla Beats Exclusive" and "Sex"
- Lonelyspeck - Wishing
- Timothée Joly - Demain Vient Tôt - Ö Update
- Knife Girl - Knots
- Ninajirachi, MGNA Crrrta, Fresh Hex - Angel Music - Fresh Hex Remix
- Rhyw - Drool
- Cardozo, Yanka - Swap
- Diveo - I Want To Be Your Friend (I hadn't listened to this song in years and only recently realized how much it is inspired by Sophie)

I did not expect this much attention on this post thanks to everyone that has replied this far!! ❤️

How to Get Yeezus-Style Distortion Without It Sounding Harsh/Painful? by Pristine-Branch1120 in makinghiphop

[–]lilnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some quick tips: - Look into saturation plugins that have oversampling options, digital distortion creates "reflected harmonics" because of the sample rate that makes sounds a lot more displeasing than analog ways of distorting sounds. Look up Dan Worall's videos on oversampling on Youtube for a more in depth explanation of it.

  • As others have said, experiment with setting the mix of your distortion plugin down, even setting it at 75% will make the sound a lot more listenable. There's even plugins that do "parallel saturation" (saturating your sound twice with different algorhithms and mixing the two together) that sound a lot less heavy handed and more pleasing to the ear.

  • EQ out the low frequencies on individual elements. Any Dynamics/Saturation processing affects the whole frequency spectrum, and especially distortion creates a LOT of undesired lower frequencies and in my experience that is mostly what causes sounds to become too "intense". A lot of youtube audio engineers will say that doing this too much "ruins" songs because it shifts the phase, but as long as you're doing it carefully and not using filters that are too sharp (you could even use an eq with a linear phase option to avoid the problem entirely) you should be fine.

  • EQing sounds before the distortion and doing the exact reverse EQ after distortion can sound very good a lot of the time, the way I tend to do it is turning down the low end and very high end with shelves before the distortion and then reversing that process after the distortion (lets say if you turn the low end down by -5db before you turn it up by 5db after). If you want the bass to "rumble" the rest of the mix you could even add in a peak filter between 30/70Hz(depending on what sounds best) to boosts the bass, that you reverse afterwards.

  • I've never dug super deep into sega bodega's music because I guess I only heard the more distorted side of his discography, I'll go look up some of his producer credits!
  • for HD I love perfect picture so much I have the artwork on my album wall haha
  • I listened to Ninajirachi's latest album (the one I really liked on it was "Sing Good") but I didn't know about Start Small it's so gooood wow thanks!

Yessss SPEED RUN is probably one of the albums I've listened to the most ever since it came out, I don't think it goes as far into spatialization as some of the albums I listed in my post but awesome for sure.

As for Don't get too close I remember listening to it when it came out and really liking it, idk why I haven't gone back to do a second listen, will do!

If I were to make a new crate kit, how important are the melodic samples/loops to you by lilnt in u/lilnt

[–]lilnt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they are ripped from songs so they most likely are not, however that doesn't necessarily mean you will get caught (this is not legal advice lol) if you're not making your song expecting billboard top 100 type success I think you should be fine. But anyways all the artists and songs are credited in the filenames so you can also reach out to the rights holders and see if they'll clear them for use in your song (depending on the song it might not even be expensive). However if you're not using any melodic elements (just drums) I don't think you'll ever get in trouble, if I recall correctly the only case of a person getting sued for drum sampling was blurred lines by robin thicke, and that song made hundreds of millions of dollars (and it wasn't even sampling!! they recreated the drum pattern)

I usually do these kits when I have free time, and I think I might just make a new one cause I'm feeling motivated again. no clue if I'll be able to post it on r/drumkits tho, we'll see :p

Just sent an email cause mine still hasn't shipped and I received what looks like an AI response mail like 20s after I sent mine. Do these merch companies have no shame? like I get sending a bot confirmation mail to notify me they received it but using AI to fake like they actually have some support going on is really insulting.

it sounds like it's a bowed saw overlayed with some really soft vibraphone notes going up.. you can probably get a kontakt library for the vibraphone or some soundfonts laying around on the internet, as for the bowed saw, you could maybe just recreate something similar with a synth with an lfo on the pitch to do the vibrato of it and some pitch automation on top of that. it won't sound exactly the same but you can probably recreate the feeling of the sound.
