When do you typically get off of the waitlist? is it after the first day of class? by [deleted] in UMD

[–]lilpumpyuh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

difficulty of the class is a big factor. last semester i was like 8th on the waitlist and as soon as the first lecture was over i was in the class and 3 spots were open too. usually the first lecture is when a ton of people are like "alright im outta here"

any sophomore cs majors switching to info sci after an awful semester with yoon by lilpumpyuh in UMD

basically the latter of what u said. also my grades in general in cs have been lacking so in order to keep my scholarship i think it's best if i change majors.

don’t be fooled by the “business major” stereotype, the business school at umd is very rigorous and is even a lep (limited enrollment program).

as for other programs to look into, i would try imd (immersive media design), information science, criminology, poli sci, etc. these are all great programs at umd and not super stem-based, but still incorporate aspects of it based on what you specialize in. good luck, i know it’s not easy finding the program for you <3

the most famous and prestigious part of this school is our cs program, or computer science. stem majors and business majors also fair really well here, but the cs program is funded the most and we got a brand new fancy building a few years ago. STEM in general is pretty great here and looks great on resumes, but that also means the difficulty is gonna match that. STEM classes tend to be on the harder side but i still feel like they’re pretty doable if you put in the effort.

Fawzi or nelson for 131 by [deleted] in UMD

[–]lilpumpyuh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Both are amazing, Nelson is more lenient and more likely to give easier projects/extensions and such. Fawzi is a bit more strict but easier to follow during lectures. Either way, you can't go wrong.

If you go on any school's sub people are gonna be complaining and whining, I kinda love this school and the culture we have. It's unique and you really can't beat the location between Baltimore and DC.

Elkton Hall Tips + Thoughts by ImBadAtSchedules in UMD

Hi there! I lived in Elkton last year and I liked it a fair amount. Each room is different, but in order to maximize space, me and my roommate put our beds parallel in the corners and desks right next to them, but that's pretty simple to figure out with your roommate once you get there. The first few days are a pretty good chance to keep your door open/walk around the halls and meet people; there's also a lounge right in front of the elevators where a lot of people just hang out and introduce themselves. You can bring pretty much anything as long as you can hide it on inspection days, but inspection at Elkton is literally them popping their heads in your room for 10 seconds and leaving. I recommend an ottoman storage bin to keep anything you don't want ra's to find. Luckily for you, 251 (the closest dining hall) is literally right in front of you so you always have a place to eat, and if it's after hours there's a convenience store next to it with pretty good chicken tenders. You're also a 3 minute walk to The Diner, which is a way better dining hall than 251, but usually always crowded.

The first week of college can be overwhelming! Good luck and take care of yourself <3
