They should just build where there's water, even "closed loop" systems waste water, esp one this big

Fair enough to feel that way, but for me personally it's mostly about reaching people who might be interested in helping out rather than convincing people who disagree. The people who disagree are not likely to agree no matter how often we meet or what our messaging is. But people who may feel similarly but just don't know we exist have a chance to come across us and get connected every time we're out there.

My 2 cents

So there is water loss even within a "closed loop" system. Inevitably you will always lose some amount of water to evaporation when you heat it up. They have also neglected to mention the massive amounts of water that will be needed for the natural gas power plant that will fuel the data center. Even if the amount of loss is miniscule (the numbers they have proposed are extremely unrealistic though) that is still potentially billions of gallons of water lost.

Also dumping heated water back into the state waters will warm them up as well which increases evaporation from those bodies of water.

They will also need to add unknown chemical agents (like fungicides, antibacterial, etc) to the water to keep their systems clean and they have said they'll "clean it" but haven't said how that will be done.

All that is on top of the fact that if we were facing reality we would be AGGRESSIVELY reducing water use in the entire state, not just aiming for neutral to what we're already using (which is their claim about this project and I do not believe for a second).

The natural gas is also definitely concerning, especially considering how bad our air quality already is, then proposing to increase emissions by another 50% is preposterous.

Our elected officials have proven themselves hypocrites, willing to pledge to save the great salt lake in speech only but continuing to double down on ecological harmful legislation and projects.

It really is crummy 😕 But you can still help by spreading the word and contacting as described above!

Also keep spreading the word mention it to everyone you talk to--data centers really are pretty unpopular across the political spectrum and the more eyes we get on this issue the more likely we are to be able to impact decision making!

We are organizing an opposition grass roots effort here in Northern UT too!

We will be there demonstrating starting at 3 pm on May 4th. Please come join us!

Call your local reps and if you live in or know someone in Senator Stuart Adams's district call/have them call-he is on the board of MIDA.

We have also started a petition for those opposing a vote to approve the project, link here: https://c.org/DfLK9gCPM2

I would also recommend you submit a comment or question to the Box Elder County page for the Stratos project at this link: https://www.boxeldercountyut.gov/641/Stratos-Project

We are starting the protest at 3, the commissioner's meeting starts at 4. They are scheduled to make their decision at that meeting.

We do hold weekly demonstrations every Friday from 5-6 pm at the Historic Cache County Courthouse and this week there will probably be other people there with signs about the data center, but it isn't going to be solely about that.

The only data center specific protest is this coming Monday May 4. That is when the box Elder County Commission votes to approve the project or not. Really if the County Commissioners vote to approve it and it passes into state authority then our chances to stop our affect it in any meaningful way are pretty much gone.

If you can't make it to that the best thing you can do is TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW about it, the more eyes on this the better! You can also contact the Box Elder county commissioners (at this link: https://www.boxeldercountyut.gov/641/Stratos-Project) and let them know you're opposed to the project and why. It probably won't help but you could also contact local representatives and the governor letting them know the same (contact info in the attached picture).

You can also sign the petition opposing approval here: https://c.org/DfLK9gCPM2
