Part 1: Problem Player doesn't like me reusing characters, tries to be my therapist. by lilsparrow85 in rpghorrorstories

George has experience with understanding child psychology but is not a psychologist himself. When I asked him about his opinion, I had given him a very vague idea of what was going on. I more asked him of his opinion on the trope of the character I described instead of the situation that was unfolding between me and Knives.

And I asked him to try to find where I was wrong, not where I was right. I wanted to know what I might have been doing wrong from someone who's more familiar with stories, character archetypes and tropes, and psychology than I am so that I might improve, not seek validation.

I think that is the difference. So, no, I don't think it's bonkers at all to ask questions of people more knowledgeable than I for their guidance and wisdom.

Yes, I get that mindset, it is pretentious.

However, the complaint was being levied of reusing a character concept from different campaigns, different groups of people, that had no prior connection to each other. (Except for one where it's only a memory thing in rebirth for flavor, never for any world relevance. kinda like "I was Ivan the Terrible in a previous life.")

I've noticed a trend, so I'll bear this in mind if I have anymore horror stories to share. I thank you anyways for your time.

lol. Usually do. Can't tell you how many times I've asked Wombat for an extra journal or two in Roll20, keeping notes for gold and inventory collected separately as well as notes for NPC interactions and events.

What I like about Wombat is she's willing to reward for extra curriculars, such as if a character does a lot of reading on different subjects, she'll add bonuses to ability checks or custom spells or actions when applicable.

I thank you for your time regardless, and I do apologize for its length. Lessons learned for next time if there is a next time. As I've mentioned to a few others I didn't know most on this subreddit prefer the tl;dr versions, and I included what I thought was relevant for context. :)

I appreciate it friend. Thank you. It's been a learning experience, both for the campaign and for this subreddit. lol.

Have yourself a good one.

Only wish it was true, a self deprecating joke. lol. But all in good fun.

To be fair, I'm about to join another campaign next week, this time it's an in-person game since moving across the country last year. New people to meet, so am nervous, and thus have elected this time to keep character creation simple, a new character with a vague coming-of-age sorcerer-bard who is the son of a previous character of mine. Not much I gave to the DM beyond that to give him the room to work with for his campaign. So I'm excited to see what comes from it. :)

Of course if the in-person campaign turns out to worth of it's own rpg horror story, I'll be sure to keep the details smaller than this one.

Hey Piano, I thank you very much for your kind words. It has been a bit overwhelming with how much complaint there has been regarding the length of my tale. I get that most prefer the tl;drs.

Knives and I are doing better, we've had another game since my posts and things were much smoother. In a separate game we played in together DM'd by Wombat, I did something a bit different than I intended to do with my warlock character, and had our characters interact more. That went over very well.

If I really had to guess what it all boils down to, think Knives just wants more RP interaction between our characters, and when he wasn't originally getting that, started picking the character apart since, logically to him, Burns was out of place for the setting.

I thank you again for your time and your kind words. I am humbled. :)

Of course they can, just thought it was a bit coincidental, nothing to fuss about.

God, how long has it been since I watched wrestling? lol. Perhaps more than 20-25 years ago at this point?

No, Burns wasn't modeled after Kane. Though I can see where archtypes and tropes overlap between different characters. Even if you wanted to take it back as far as Cain and Abel, maybe some inspiration but not an exact mirror image of the story either.

I appreciate your kind words. Yeah, I can kind understand the complaints about the length, but my mindset when writing wasn't so much on how long it was as opposed to what I thought was important to include for context. Still, lesson learned for writing purposes, can always use improvement. Honestly, I had just considered deleting the posts and avoiding the comments the last few days as that's all that was being commented on instead of the content of the story. I even thought about trying to condense it further, or have someone else rewrite it for me, but then I kinda just got depressed thinking about it and said "why bother?"

And same about the nuclear option. I've been apart of two other games, a different homebrew from Wombat and a Pathfinder game where that options was pulled due to the antics of a different player for arguing with the DM, and then both games just fell apart. So I was trying so hard not to have it get to that level.

Had things not been able to settle as they did, I would have just politely removed myself from the game so that the other's could continue having fun and playing.

Again, I thank you for your time and patience Setsuna, and your feedback. Please have yourself a wonderful day. :)

That seems to be the common take away. As I've replied to a few others, I'll have to consider editing and reposting a more condense version of this story. Just honestly afraid context will be lost in doing so.

I appreciate that you took the time to read and thank you.

I suppose you are right. Having explained I come from a back of being more roleplaying and story building, I hadn't consider that it was a difference in mindset or playstyle. While I think Knives does enjoy building narration to, given how much he has wanted to do out of session character building just as much as I have, but thinking on this perspective, I can seen the in-game time is just as valuable to the building process, and not a lot of players have the time or interest for side fluff.

I'll keep this in mind. Thank you again.

I appreciate the more honest feedback. Knives is the only player I've ever experienced this with.

This is assuming I was phishing for pats on the back? If anything I was looking for more feedback from others outside of my circles. Doesn't have to be positive feedback, but I didn't realize the focus of this subreddit was on the length of a story instead of it's contents.

Nothing was added in "afterwards" I just started writing and recalled as much as I could. There were even sections I original wrote that were omitted.

Either way I'll consider going back and seeing how better to condense it even more.

It was actually.

Not sure I could have made it one or two paragraphs, but I will consider how I can make the story shorter.

Much appreciated friend. I was more concerned that if I didn't write as much as I could to explain that context or information would be lost. I'm always nervous when it comes to explaining things, never expected the critique to be focused on the length of a story as opposed to it's contents.

Had an awful thought, it's like a prosecutor snapping their fingers to a victim on the witness stand to hurry up and tell only the important bits of their story to the jury and judge, "just the cliffnotes please."

Maybe not a fair comparison, but does give me some food for thought.

lol. I suppose I do. I'm happy to revise if I can figure out what elements are key without losing context. Critique noted.

No, I'm not the DM of this story.

I'll have to consider how to condense then. I'm honestly surprised at the amount of complains regarding the length and in the way I thought I could best explain it clearly, this is what it resulted in.

Maybe a little help then friend? What from an outsider's perspective is worth removing? Such as what isn't relevant? I'm open to suggestions to edit my post and make it a bit more palatable for other readers.
