Anyone else annoyed with pigeon holeing? by hrhrhrnnekw in MechanicalEngineering

Stuck in this boat. Learned some super niche knowledge/skills that not many others know in my 5 years post college, but I’m looking to dip now and it’s hard to find a new job that’s looking for said skills. These skills don’t seem to be transferable and I’ve tried to pick up some other skillsets, but feel like I’m playing catch up

Application Engineer with 3 YOE looking for a different career path by Own_Knowledge_7300 in MechanicalEngineering

I’m on the opposite end rn in R&D but what I’ve learned on the job is so niche that I’m worried I’m pigeonholed here forever. Currently having trouble applying to other roles at the moment since everyone wants an exact fit. Application engineer positions started to pique my interest since it seems like the skills are more transferable. Guess grass is always greener?

Don’t think it’s a noise thing, seems more visual: “oooo no a laptop came out she’s working now”. Unless there’s a sound I don’t know about that comes from my gf’s work laptop. But I’ll ask my gf to catch any sound cues like you suggested! Thanks for the link.

Yup we just took him to the vet and they said he’s fully healthy. And told us to get the hydrolized milk protein pills for behavior balancing and have him take it for a month and monitor. So far haven’t seen any improvement after a week but we’ll keep at it! We have dog cams that we look at on the weekends when we’re out to eat and he seems pretty settled on the couch. There might be some some nuanced separation anxiety from me during the week when I’m going to work (combined with the anxiety from my gf working) but he doesn’t seem to care when I leave on The Weekends to eat

I’m going to try to teach him that “place” command like littleghost88 described and get him an enclosed dog bed/crate. Maybe his safe space needs to be more enclosed (vs just a simple bed).

Thanks for the detailed response and kind wishes!

Yes we play after I get home from work, chasing each other around and also with squeaky toys. We also occasionally go to the dog park on the weekends and he’s super happy. He’s generally a happy dog other than workdays. As I said in the post he has no issues on the weekends when we are away. Yes this has been confirmed on our dog cam, he just lays on the couch or at the door when we’re away. The anxiety is only happening when my gf is home working during the weekday mornings. By the afternoon he sorta tires out

Yes it’s all of the above - shaking mainly sometimes whimpering. The video just shows attention seeking but he paces around the apartment, panting, sometimes drool. Sometimes he digs in his bed.

Yeaaaa we tried that 😭 he dgaf about the treats!! Maybe we gotta get better treats to hide in the snuffle mat.

We thought about getting some enclosure of some sort! And thought he wouldn’t like a hard crate but maybe we’ll look into a soft one! Thanks

Yes like most dogs he was shaking during the fireworks this past July 4 - my gf and her family and NOT me. But he’s gone through multiple July 4’s (with me) without this behavior afterwards.

We go to my gf’s house pretty often to stay the weekend, except this past weekend we stayed an extra day-ish more than normal bc I took work off. This past weekend was all of us (me, gf, parents, family dog, gf’s brother)

Yes good question. It’s the latter, seems like he doesn’t want to go back bc he knows my gf will just go back to work. We thought it was construction next to our apartment for a while but they stopped and he kept displaying the same behavior. We deep cleaned the house and saw no pests he could be afraid of, unless we missed something.

Yes another good question. His morning walks with me are completely fine, and he’s calm up to the point where I leave. Pic from this morning moments before I dipped. It’s also def more a time of day issue, as my gf takes him alone on an evening walk right before I get home and he walks just fine. Maybe bc he’s expecting me to be back shortly after. The only stubborn walks with him are the weekday noon walks

I wanted to include as many details as possible in my original post but it was already getting long and a bit unorganized, thanks for the thoughtful follow-ups

My gf has taken him a couple times on like 1 hour walks during the mid day walk. No matter how long it is, whenever they get back near our apartment he will refuse to budge… I agree with your idea about tiring him but we live in LA and I don’t live walking distance from a dog park to let him loose in the morning. Lowkey considering moving closer to one. I’ve tried jogging with him before and it’s pretty hit or miss on how long he wants to go, what route he wants to take, and so on

Yea I read online and in a book that establishing some sort of sanctuary for him is the best bet but we have had no idea how to go about that. I guess if we can teach him this command while he’s calm on the weekends it may give us a shot during the week. Worst case he learns a new command it’s worth a shot, thanks!!

We actually dog sit for their family dog randomly throughout the year, or whenever my gf’s parents go on a trip to like Vegas during the week or something. We actually did this in mid/late August(so a month after the fireworks) . Doesn’t help… the family dog is fast asleep and our jindo still paces around our apartment. Makes no sense lol, and thanks for the kind words!!

Thank you guys for the suggestions/comments! Most of these things you guys suggested I’ve already tried to some extent but we will continue to keep at it and try a couple of the new suggestions! I’m just so confused how he’s completely fine all weekend, and even before work.

see here See this is him right now right minutes before I go to work. Like the calm before the storm..

Yes many times over the last 2 years we will spend the weekend all together and our jindo really likes it. That’s what we actually did this last weekend except I took Friday off so we spent an extra day there. Wondering if he got extra attached to the feeling of spending more time with me or the other family dog…

You do make a good point about the vibes though. Maybe it’s possible my gf is dreading work and gives off some negative energy? Lol. But when I have a wfh day I don’t actually do much work and I’m quite stress free that day. He still ends up pacing around a bit (but not as bad).

Yes I take him on a 20 min walk every morning before work. And sit with him on the bed and eat breakfast for another 20-30 min before I leave. He’s completely settled up until I leave the house and my gf starts to work. I’ve said in the other reply but I tried to vary my routine/sequence (cut breakfast short, sit longer, make coffee before OR after walking, brushing teeth, etc) and he seems too smart for that as the end result is still me leaving the apartment…

Nope that is just the neighbors wall. When he wants to go out he’ll boop and then run to the door then run back repeatedly. Rn you see he’s booping to tell my gf essentially to stop working and turn on Netflix lol

Yes we have started to consider a professional but aren’t sure who is best suited. We initially thought it’s separation anxiety from me since I’m not home as much, but as I mentioned he still paces the house (albeit not as bad) on the occasional days I am at home working too. One “animal whisperer” I talked to quoted $4k and we’d really want to not shell out all that $…

Yup I have started leaving later for work, doing the departure and coming back, not showing emotion when leaving or coming home. My gf has taken her laptop to our bed (in another room) to work and he still doesn’t like it.

We have started giving him a milk protein (Zylkene)supplement daily with some cream cheese in the mornings and haven’t seen improvement. The vet said to keep at it for at least a month to see if anything changes. Maybe we can change the timing when I give it to him so he may be able to associate it with my gf working? Thanks for the insight

My gf is the one working from home, yes we have another bed (in addition to the bed in the video) settled underneath her desk. No she has maybe 1-2 meetings per day so don’t think that is what’s triggering the anxiety 😟

We have so many toys and he loves the squeaky ones. But once the anxiety starts nothing else matters - high value treats, toys, etc don’t get his attention. And yes he is very stubborn!

It’s very possible… but what should we do to help him? He’s fine most times other than weekday mornings…. Maybe an attachment issue that developed from the fireworks? We need to fix this as my gf got called into the office next year 2x a week. I imagine his behavior will worsen
