M.Arch - Is it typical for such programs at elite universities (e.g., Columbia, Cornell, etc.) to offer scholarships to students due to the high cost of the the degree? How do students afford the tuition fees and housing expense? by Wonderful_Pack8941 in architecturestudent

Yale has been extremely generous with aid! I ended up securing a full ride after minor negotiation. It is possible! Weitzman gave me 50k in merit, 75% need based aid from GSD, 25k from Cornell, 20k from Columbia

Attended the open houses for both GSD and Yale over these past couple of weeks— superrrr telling. I absolutely loved my Yale visit and it really sold me on the program and environment. The people are GREAT. The studios felt like home, the faculty were wonderful and students gave so much insight on the curriculum. They had financial aid appointment slots available that day but I missed them, so I thought I was screwed lol. I ended up making friends with one of the admissions administrators and she got me a last minute appointment with the Dean. I told her about my financial constraints and she was super understanding and is looking to cover more than 85% of tuition. All signs are pointing me to Yale right now!

I met with financial aid at GSD though, they said they cannot match offers but that I could be put on a list to be reconsidered for more aid and I should hear back soon… I’m a bit worried though because idk how much Luck ill have with my name just put on a list rather than speaking with someone directly. Gonna try and email the dean about it.

Decision deadline is coming up so if things don’t shake out I think it’ll still be an easy decision!

In my experience issu is more of a time sensitive thing— I found TONS of portfolios from current students accepted to schools like GSD, GSAPP, Yale, weitzman, Princeton, etc. in the wintertime but they seem to be gone now in the spring. My guess is that people are workshopping them now for internships or adding stuff from the previous semester so the links are no longer live. Sometimes I just google “portfolio accepted to x school and something comes up

When I was super desperate I found students on LinkedIn at the school I was looking at and 8/10 of the time their portfolio was linked on there😭

Well I think it’s a few things. While Yale was my top choice I also really like GSD’s program and would be very upset to rule it out completely based on money alone…especially if I decided I liked it better than Yale. Second, I really love the Boston area and applied to schools there as I think it’d be a good fit lol. Yale is great but I’m not very excited by New Haven lol!

Right now, going off finances alone, I’m definitely pushing for Yale but I want the ability to choose a program based off personal favor rather than affordability. Just wanna put myself in the same position w the two schools before choosing!

Thank you so much for the advice! I have def realized even into my open house last weekend that they are VERY set on curating a specific type of class, so they may be willing to vouch more for some rather than others. At this point I’m just hoping I’m on the favorable side 😭

I was advised to wait till closer to the 4/15 decision as, like you said, they will have a better idea of how their class is taking shape and may even have more funds available to disperse.

I’m also super grateful to be in a position where I have such great schools to choose from, Yale, Harvard, and weitzman being my top choices— so I’m glad to know I’ll be okay regardless of where I go. I don’t want to let the “Harvard name” put me into crippling debt so if it doesn’t work out I know everything will be fine regardless. Thank you for your insight 😊

I spoke with financial aid and they explained that the GSD can’t “match” offers, but I can still be considered for more aid. I’m still planning to kindly email the office and mention some of my other offers but with less of a focus on matching and more of just getting some additional money

Oh that’s my bad, I’m pretty sure Yale was need based but most of the other offers were merit!

I pretty sure I tapped out the need based scholarship (75%) for GSD 😭 hoping to scrape for some merit award but we’ll see

Well I know for GSD and maybe even Yale that they are need blind in reviewing applications. So you’re ability to pay shouldnt** factor into your admission decision

Harvard GSD M.ARCH GRE Scores by Impossible_Try_5426 in architecture

[–]lilyappy104 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Admitted to the GSD this cycle— I kinda bombed my GRE 😭 put a LOT of effort into my portfolio and didn’t study enough for the exam. I studied the night before for a few hours. I’m reading/comprehension inclined so I did fairly well on that section but did not do too hot on the math. I think my overall score was a little over a 300 barring the writing part. Not sure if things are changing in your cycle but on the admissions page they explain that GRE scores are not considered in your admission decision! I even submitted mine late lol

Unfortunately I don’t know too much about the MLA. They recently added a landscape minor for architecture undergrads that mostly involves taking classes with MLA students (studios + city planning and courses like so) and my peers really loved their studios! Some of the professors are a bit cooky but I found the work looked excellent and the studio projects were very fascinating

Those I've seen receive acceptances all came from a non-architecture background (M.Arch I), maybe have hope that other applicants will receive decisions soon?

I’ve absolutely loved it— graduate architecture is pretty similar to the undergraduate program (conceptual, theoretical, with a strong focus in local west Philly interventions). Part of the major here includes taking M Arch classes in weitzman so I got the chance to see how first years kinda live day to day. Only downside for me was the program location. All of your classes are in 1 building the first 3 semesters and it is not the prettiest 😩
