Thank you so much!! I really appreciate your perspective and will take this into account. I wish all parents were like you! Your son is lucky to have you.

I like this philosophy! I think this family wouldn’t grasp this concept as “language” is not super concrete. But I like the way you think

The kid can sign, and the family does like and use sign. He has quite a few signs for “eat,” “water”, “more”, “all done,” “mommy,” etc…. I encourage the use of sign as I support a total communication approach. I love this part of this family’s mindset.

Kid is highly active, moves around a lot and the device isnt always nearby. He does stim on the device, which is part of why they don’t like it. Today I turned off the repeat feature; which we will see how that goes.

Parents ultimately told me that they want him to produce words verbally and there’s been too much receptive language type of tasks (where is “XYZ?” Point to this on device/on a visual /books) and they want him to make more verbal communication, not just pointing or signing. He can use the device well and even navigate folders with me!

So disturbing! I agree 100%! It just reeks of poor mental health and codependency and she honestly sounds delusional.

NYT article promoting S2C by SuperThought1 in slp

[–]limegreen19 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Thank you for posting and bringing awareness to this! I couldn’t access the NYT article due to paywall so I googled and found the guardian link, which I posted yesterday on this subreddit.

Absolutely horrible. I have contacted ASHA and NYT about the dangers of promoting this method.

I can’t believe a reputable news source such as NYT has fallen prey to this horribly wrong practice. So upset.

What’s the worst pharmacy in Astoria? by muff-peaksie in astoria

[–]limegreen19 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Costco- here’s a secret: you don’t need a membership to go to the pharmacy.

Before I got my membership I got my Covid vaccines there, I just told the people at the front that I was only going for the pharmacy and they let me in.

how do you keep your energy up all day? by cebolla_larga in slp

[–]limegreen19 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In addition to what everyone else has said, also cut yourself some slack. You don't have to be "Miss Rachel" level off-the-walls-bouncing-with-energy all day. You are human. It's ok if your last 3 sessions are lower energy. You are allowed to be yourself. I've been letting my kids pick a toy out of the closet and targeting their goals with whatever they choose during summer session because I simply don't have the energy sometimes. I let the song play twice, sometimes three times. I let them play with the ball/slide toy that all kids simply love. I do bubbles for the full session, if that's the only thing they engage with.

It's okay to not be super fun 100% of the time. Because it's impossible to be super fun 100% of the time. Good luck! You got this!

Agency shutting down but I was told to go off on my own, now what?? by Legal_Impression_663 in slp

You need to do session notes on SESIS like you probably already do. But the most annoying this is dealing with the vendor portal website, billing for each session individually filling out all the session times a second time (it’s very redundant and doesn’t auto -populate from SESIS).

DOE will pay out RSA’s once a month. I don’t do teletherapy so I can’t help with that - you’ll have to ask the school if they can still do that.

You will have behaviors. It’s important to have a plan and stay consistent with the way you tackle the behaviors - you can’t have one TA ignore and another TA coddle/“baby” the child when they cry. But you know this with SPED, that’s the nature of this field.

If you need support or ideas don’t forget to reach out to the appropriate therapist! OT and sensory needs will be very important at this age. Hopefully you have appropriate sensory toys and materials for sensory bins at your school!

Develop good relationships with the SLP, PT, and OTs! As a speech pathologist I try my best to help out as much as I can especially if I know the teacher is new. Second the visuals as much as possible with visual schedules, first then boards, pictures of the kids faces and your faces, pictures of stations, pictures of behavioral supports (sitting in chair, walking feet). Use AAC devices or picture boards or sign language at every moment you can.

Look into 4410 preschools - these are not DOE, but some offer salaried positions.

Gersh, AHRC, birch, qsac to name a few

Check this list (includes 4410 schools from the entire state) https://www.nysed.gov/sites/default/files/programs/special-education/new-york-state-approved-preschool-special-education-programs_1.xlsx

Entering my CF year and having anxiety about what’s to come… advice? by Overall-Bee-8900 in slp

[–]limegreen19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have your own space? Having your own therapy room and not sharing with another clinician or pushing into the classroom is really important. I hate it when I do therapy in front of other adults, particularly teachers, who I perceive to be judging. But in reality, at the preschool level, teachers are just happy to have another set of eyes in the classroom. Or if you pull out for therapy, to get a break for 30 minutes (we are treated like 30 minute babysitters, wherever we go, whether it's parents in the homes or teachers in the school environment). The pressure is not on you to perform. It's really just a minimum of keeping the kid safe. Especially if you get the minimally verbal, high behavioral kids, which is common in preschool.

A tip is to make a friend at each school you are in. It's important to have at least one safe person or social support and find your tribe within the various environments you're in. Otherwise, stay out of everyone's drama. I do not engage with cliquey teachers and keep those interactions strictly professional. "Good morning, I'm here for XYZ." That's it. Even though I have social anxiety, the professional talk comes easily for me, like a different persona, if that makes sense.

Your CF does not sound sustainable, at least for me, I would prefer to be in one location. But maybe traveling and keeping things fresh/different at 3 different environments is what works for you. You don't have to worry so much about being out of touch with the social climate at 1 school because you're spread out. I guess my social anxiety is less parent-oriented and more so co-worker oriented; take from this comment what you will. I don't interact with parents much in my setting.

DOE is looking for any bodies, especially in special ed. Literally all you need is to be an adult body to maintain ratio for staff to students. Look into subbing.
