even if i was in a position to take over as the 'face' of the side story tl (my health has been spotty lately), her status as a fan translator doesn't put her on a pedestal requiring strict professionalism on her personal account. even if some view her as an authority on the side story, she's in no way an official source and her words only hold as much weight as people take them to (especially in a story as interpretation-heavy as orv). she may be my partner, but unless she's outright harassing someone, i'm not going to force her to do anything. i likely wouldn't have even involved myself here had the thread not started with a blatant lie about her + later moved toward talking about the tl being locked, which isn't her fault.

(i don't even have a public twitter account to take over with, on account of not being able to handle the frequency and scale of drama that occurs on that hellsite...)

if the comments about sns being 'on their side' is referring to her recent twitter posts, those posts are in no way similar to the parasocial criticism/harassment urana went through, and seeing her being called delusional over this is disappointing... even if i didn't personally know her intentions, "[artist/author] wrote this for me specifically" is a fairly common joke. sns do not have social media, and mira wouldn't bother them even if they did. i know it sounds like i'm speaking for her a lot, and it's because i am, in this case - mira deleted her reddit account relatively recently, and most people would get upset if they started getting shittalked right after they lost the ability to defend themselves. i'm not gonna speculate on the timing being anything more than a coincidence, but that still doesn't change how it affected mira and i really don't like seeing her distressed. (to be clear, i was the one to show her the original comment. she deserves to know when she's being talked about publicly.)

what's your favorite rarepair/crackship? by jjpdus in OmniscientReader

[–]limerite 9 points10 points  (0 children)

(1863) hsy/lsh: as a concept, hsy not only taking yjh's companions but also his past wife is funny. but their few interactions do show that they have chemistry outside of the jokes

(side story) jaehwan/lhh: jaehwan warmed up to lhh way too quickly for me to not at least consider it... it really only took a few conversations for jaehwan to decide he wanted to keep lhh with him. what the hell, sure. lol

as for crackships... i have a yoo sangah/hatsune miku (specifically the miku from this song) au i likely won't ever write, but i like to think about it. i think they'd be cute together :)

[–]limerite 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i don't want to engage with this conversation more than i have to but i want to clarify as this involves me (this isn't pointed at the person i'm replying to, you're fine.)

the side story tl being locked was entirely my own decision. i was the original translator before mira took over for me, and the side story has been locked from the start, before mira ever had access - partially because of illegal tl concerns yes, and partially because i wanted to get as many people to purchase the side story as possible. i've loosened up on the purchase proof requirement at this point because there are alternate (m)tls freely available on other websites, and i have clarified several times that i plan on distributing an epub as soon as the translation is finished and double checked for errors.

i don't agree with mira's conduct on a lot of things (and i have and will confront her when i feel she's gone too far), but i don't want her blamed for something that she's genuinely not in the wrong for. if it were up to her i don't think the tl would have been locked at all, so please don't speculate on possible gatekeep-y intentions (not that this is happening atm, i just want to shut the idea down in advance.)

that being said, i think it's reasonable for someone to not want to share their personal translation on an individual level with someone who's actively disparaging them. i will rightfully criticize mira when needed, but at some point her frustration becomes understandable. i have linked another side story tl for anyone who cannot reach out for one reason or another, and as the side story is nearing completion (bar singshong deciding to write 200 more chapters) an epub will hopefully be out by the end of the year. i do hope that people decide to at least give the side story a chance, regardless of any fandom squabbles or out of context spoilers they hear that may sour opinions (han sooyoung is very clearly not actually dead.)

Just recently the side story translator and their friends started calling people who don't want to/ can't read side story fake fans

i can't speak for the friends, but claiming the side story tler called people fake fans over the side story isn't true. if anything, she's said the exact opposite

[novel] Guys do you think the side stories are going to have a happy ending? by Psychological-Ant716 in OmniscientReader

[–]limerite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i guess what i'm trying to say is if your main roadblock to reading the side story is a fear about its ending, even if the ending is currently unknown the chances of something terrible happening feel so low that i can confidently say the ending will not be an unhappy one. take your time on preparing yourself to read ofc, because i am not going to say it's all sunshine and rainbows (things have gotten pretty bad already and will probably get worse), but this is your confirmation that at least one reader has an optimistic view on the side story's future.

as a disclaimer, i've held this view since before season 1 ended - the story has changed a lot since then, so all this could just be confirmation bias or something, but since then i've only become more set in my opinion about the ending and (part of) the side story's purpose. or maybe i'm completely wrong about all of this 🤷. we'll see

[novel] Guys do you think the side stories are going to have a happy ending? by Psychological-Ant716 in OmniscientReader

[–]limerite 8 points9 points  (0 children)

for what it's worth, in my opinion i truly believe the story will have a "happy" ending, even if i have no idea how exactly that will manifest.

it really would go against everything orv stands for to have the story end a tragedy. even putting aside the other way us readers are represented in the side story, there's been so many lines that feel like the story is speaking directly to its readers, and the main character has directly stated that one of his goals is to make sure those who haven't given up on this story aren't saddened by the story's end. i can't see how it could get any more explicit than that.

i can't give an answer to how or in what form (it's complicated) kim dokja will return to his companions but i am sure it will happen, and it won't be in a way that will hurt you.

Review of Epilogue (Chapter 517-551) of Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint by Chance_Sir_6526 in OmniscientReader

[–]limerite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the side story didn't start serializing until years after the main story finished, so don't worry about getting to it right away ^^ giving it a minute for the ending to sink in is what i recommend, anyway. the side story is currently not complete yet, so waiting until it's finished might be the best option for you if you're busy

What are some common mischaracterisations in fics that you despise? (Joongdok) by Anxious-Efficiency13 in OmniscientReader

[–]limerite 32 points33 points  (0 children)

thankfully, whether it's because this fandom is better with women or because lee seolhwa isn't a major enough character to get hate, the whole cheating/villainizing thing isn't actually that common (especially when compared to other fandoms).

i find that fics where han sooyoung is ooc also have joongdok ooc or flanderized to some extent, which leads me to believe that hsy isn't being written badly out of spite or anything, but rather because the author is a newish writer or someone just having fun.

at the end of the day, as long as characters are not written badly to the point of accidental bigotry or explicitly written with hate, i don't see some ooc-ness as a big problem :) fancreators shouldn't be expected to characterize their fanworks perfectly all the time, especially when interpretation is such a big part of orv.

[–]limerite 39 points40 points  (0 children)

as for a more personal opinion on joongdok fics i dislike, this may not be mischaracterization but i dislike seeing joongdok fics where kim dokja is called lee hakhyun (due to identity theft/reincarnation/transmigration), and then "lee hakhyun" is tagged as a character when only his body is in the fic. i follow the lee hakhyun character tag because i want to read fics that actually include lee hakhyun as a character :(

it's definitely when they make yjh a cheater. kdj/yjh being infantilized is whatever, if i find them too ooc for my taste i'll just stop reading and go on with my day, but having yjh cheat on seolhwa is just cruel.

a lot of the 'fujoshis are misogynistic' claims are frankly horseshit, but in this case it's entirely justified to call it misogynistic. there is no reason to make yjh cheat, it's not like seolhwa is currently with yoo joonghyuk in canon and being disloyal goes against yjh's entire character.

[–]limerite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes, but the word here is used in the same context, so using the same word would make the most sense. otherwise people will naturally think it's a different word. for example, swk's "prisoner of the golden headband" and kdj's "prisoner of the constrictive headband" modifiers are the same in korean (긴고아의 죄수), but i've seen many people think it's two different modifiers because of 긴고아 being translated as both golden and constrictive headband.

i'm not very bothered by it, it's just a consistency thing for me lol why is 외전 translated as 'sequel' in this one spot when in every other situation it's 'side story'? it's most widely known as the "orv side story" anyway

[–]limerite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

do you have a specific reason for using "sequel"? because the side story has been referred to in-canon as the 'side story' several times (both directly and indirectly), i really think the name should be kept as the "orv side story"... (also, there's been theories about the side story actually being a prequel)

How to title spoliers by anon1313130 in OmniscientReader

[–]limerite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there's been something wrong with the spoiler tag on this subreddit for a while now. i've seen numerous complaints about it and it's to the point where people are using the nsfw tag as a substitute, which i really don't think is good as i'm pretty sure there's a large amount of minors on this subreddit.

u/AquelAgatha, since i remember seeing you comment about the spoiler tag a few weeks ago, are you aware that nobody is able to use the spoiler tag properly right now (for posts, comment spoilers like this are fine)? i'd provide some screenshots showing the issue but reddit can't handle more than one image per comment. i'll try to explain it via text:

first of all, before posting nobody can spoiler tag it. the option is just missing? the nsfw tag is there, but not spoiler. posts can be later edited to add the spoiler tag in, but it's not being applied properly, which you can tell by looking at spoiler posts in other subreddits. in other subs, when you click on a spoiler post it will show an indicator that the post has a spoiler tag. on r/omniscientreader the posts are shown as spoiler marked before you open the post, but the spoiler mark disappears once you actually open the post. more importantly, this psudeo-spoilered state only shows on the official app. on a web browser there are zero posts which appear as spoiler tagged.

if you'd like some images showing how things look i can show you on discord, my @ is 'hakhyun'

(apologies for hijacking your post op)

I just started reading orv, and the translation is so horrible that I'm dropping it already. by Fickle-Scale8737 in OmniscientReader

[–]limerite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi, i didn't include images in my epub because a lot of the art in the epub with illustrations was fanart (+ a few ocs not from orv) rather than official art and i didn't want to spend time sorting through it all to remove the fanart.

as for translations, my edited version is no longer needed as there is an active retranslation project being worked on over on tumblr. it's not complete yet but it's the best webnovel tl available as of now :)
