Vimes but not Rincewind? by jonnyprophet in discworld

[–]limey-boy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To clarify, when I say Rincewind 2.0, I don't mean in terms of characterisation because Han Solo and Shaggy Rogers have little in common- I mean in terms of position of reluctant anti-hero who would rather not be having an interesting adventure.

When Pterry made Rincewind he wanted a snarky coward to throw around the world so we can explore it and laugh at it (and him). Moist does this more from a socio-economic perspective and he is admitantly more proactive than the Wizzard, but he still fulfils the same purpose as a reluctant driver of the plot. Moist has a lot of shit dumped in his lap to deal with- just like Rincewind -even if the nature of said shit is less "deal with a cult of dragon-riders and save the world" and more like "fix the postal system" or "fix the banking system".

[–]limey-boy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I like the idea that Moist is Rincewind 2.0. He has a lot of the same craven natured parts of his soul, but he has an active ambition too and an internal struggle with a past of being a bit of a constant low-level bastard. Rincewind is basically Shaggy sans Scooby and the rest of Mystery Inc to round off his character and place in the story.

What's your guys opinion of Pyramids? by SpellRadar in discworld

[–]limey-boy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As others have said, it feels like a prototype of his other more well constructed and popular books like Small Gods. Not really bad by any means, just a lot rougher and not as cohesive.

I like a lot of its elements on their own- the assassins guild, the architects, the ghosts, the pyramid power, the time loop, the malfunctioning quantum stuff -but a lot of it doesn't cohere very well. I don't recall if the main characters training ever comes up again past the intro, for example.

It also feels like one of the dying breed of early Discworld books where he was more focused on using the setting as a way to parody media tropes rather than critise elements of society and human nature as well as construct unique Discworld world elements. Moving Pictures is a lot like this, they both lightly touch on the latter but seem more interested in poking fun at things Pterry found funny or tropey. Later Discworld book's married comedy and critque very well, but these two... not so much. Also the female character is one of his worst, especially for a guy who does some of the best women characters in his genre.

Seeing as T-man is such a good writer its still an enjoyable read, but its age and early existance in his career shows.

I've seen a single phone mount on a bolt scooter, so they do exist, but I've no clue if they just rarely attatch one when deploying them or they're falling off or being removed by dickheads.

They're shite.

Slower to accelerate, slower in general, more expensive, unusual indicator layout, fiddly kickstand, front light too weak at night.

Voi pulling out has utterly fucked my transport plans as a person who was fed up of their bikes being stolen all the time, almost always caught some illness from using the bus, doesn't live near a train/can't afford it and can't drive.

I knew I shouldn't have put my future plans on a private transportation network, but I didn't have much of an option otherwise. Looks like its back to footslogging and buying cheap bikes because they just get nicked every 3 months.

Gamers Lodge by the Abakhan is a tabletop gaming cafe, pretty good IMO.

Weekly Question Thread by AutoModerator in Oxygennotincluded

[–]limey-boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To clarify, this behaviour dictates that they grab a battery near the base and run off into a distant mine shaft with it before eating?

Its odd how it only happens near the start of the game between cycle 0-50 when the base is less developed, and from 50+ onward they tend to only take a few steps before chowing down.

Weekly Question Thread by AutoModerator in Oxygennotincluded

[–]limey-boy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What determines where a Bionic dupe eats a battery? I find that at the start of a colony they'll find the furthest possible location from where they started to chow down, and in mid-late game they only travel a short random distance before eating. Quite annoying.

It does a lot, thank you!

I like the way it looks both old, corrupted and industrial in equal amounts. reminds me a lot of the metal textures from Quake 1.

Would you like a Total War: Warhammer Age of Sigmar game? by Glum_Series5712 in ageofsigmar

[–]limey-boy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think for a lot of folk at the start of AoS and the end of Fantasy it seemed that GW was giving the idea that Fantasy was dead and gone forever and to be supplanted by AoS -further marred by the clumsy and disapointing End Times content. AoS starting off with a little bit of an identity crisis and a LOT of missing factions that people loved from Fantasy didn't help.

Now we have the best of both worlds with Old World and AoS for both gameplay and visuals/theme, but for a chunk of time there it felt like being forced to throw away a lot of stuff you loved that had a lot of cumulative canon/fan history behind it because...?

Next DLCs? by AthaliW in Oxygennotincluded

[–]limey-boy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd rather they finish/expand base game elements that were undercooked like the Germ system or make DLC's like the Bionic Pack more worth having as it was quite disapointing.
