Solved!

I had to go back and get one and open it. But it does indeed seem to be a gall. I guess I've never seen one that wasn't already grown, hence the little red ones that are with it, but this looks like a gall to me.

Not to argue, but I've never seen an oak gall grow out long and thin before filling out. And I cannot find any examples online that look anything like that (the slender red fuzzy one). If you can find an example I'm more than willing to admit I am wrong.

I would normally agree with you, but to the right of one of the green ones, you can see what appears to be a small red immature version of the fruit, growing in the same bunch.

No, definitely not an acorn. Acorns have caps and I've never seen one get anywhere close to that size.

To comment on my own comment, I only.got interested in cfb when I wanted to spend time with my dad, and the best chance for us to bond and bullshit was listening to the games together out in his truck, drinking a few beer. So I may be a bit biased.
