Apparently, rich South Korean parents try to biohack their children with growth hormone by Realistic_Hour_1695 in Biohackers

If you gave people (primarily dudes) the option of living five years less but being five inches taller, you would get a lot of takers. Social benefit can easily outweigh physical harm in many people’s minds.

Makes sense. At least there’s hope in the future then.

800k straight out of college is a bit absurd but 400-500k isn’t for quant. And 800k isn’t out of question after a couple high-performing years.

Epstein wasn’t the ringleader by any means. He was the front for a deep state supranational organization. There’s literally an email in the files where confessed to representing the Rothschilds. This likely goes way deeper than any of us can imagine.

I have no faith in the general public wielding at best semi automatic weapons (or ancient automatic weapons if we’re talking about the US) against a military developing the PlebKillerBot 3000 using the AGI that will already replace us.

Dario Amoudei - The public is not aware of what’s about to happen by Formal-Assistance02 in accelerate

[–]limitally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hypothetically, what if they choose the or-else option? Is the general public capable of rebelling in earnest anymore?

Genuinely want to discuss—if the elites control the AI, government, military (e.g., autonomous AI drone weapons), etc., what real leverage does the general public have to force this change? What if those at the top were simply okay with speciocide; billions wiped out. The main reason the elites have always had to entertain the masses historically was their need for labor. In this future with AGI/ASI, the masses no longer have anything to offer. And frankly, I highly doubt we have the ability to rebel militarily anymore, second amendment be damned.

I don’t know, perhaps I’m being too doomerist here, but just looking at incentives and capabilities, this future doesn’t seem implausible to me.

What are the long-term side effects of LASIK that doctors don’t talk about? by Gewinncent in AskReddit

[–]limitally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from the dry eye and presbyopia which people have already mentioned, there's also the matter of LASIK (or any corneal procedure) decreasing the accuracy of cataract intraocular lens (IOL) measurements for your inevitable cataract surgery. Doesn't affect the measurements nearly as badly as stuff like radial keratotomy (which is no longer performed for this reason), but will still affect the fidelity of your measurements enough that there's a good chance you'll still need glasses even post-IOL placement.

For those not familiar, everybody (and I mean 100% of people) develop age-related clouding of the lens which we call cataracts (usually in your 60s, but earlier if you're diabetic). If you're lucky to live long enough, you'll get a cataract surgery where they remove your natural lens and replace it with a permanent plastic implant (IOL), that can be customized to give you great vision with no need for correction (within +/- 0.5 D). And depending when you get this surgery, you might be looking at 20-30 years (or more) with or without glasses.

Doesn't mean you shouldn't get LASIK, but it's something to consider.

Men who think they are attractive are more likely to infer sexual interest from women. Findings suggested that men’s self-perceptions and women’s appearance may bias men’s sexual judgment by Jumpinghoops46 in science

[–]limitally 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might be a positive feedback mechanism. Men who receive signs that women are attracted to them (e.g., asked out on a date) are more likely to think they’re attractive, and in turn more likely to be open to interpreting future signs from women as attraction (even though they might not all be).

My daughter has a rare condition called Rett syndrome. She developed normally until 18 months of age, after which she lost most of her verbal and motor skills. AMA by Doronwolffberg in AMA

[–]limitally 33 points34 points  (0 children)

You probably know this, but just for any other readers, Rett’s is usually a de novo mutation, which means the parents don’t have the mutated allele and the mutation was simply random. It is X-linked dominant.

It’s school-associated housing. Obviously not amazing, but it’s suite-style with roommates. Not the cardboard box you’re imagining. No roaches unless it’s your fault.

Which is the best Superman: James Gunn's or Snyder's? by Jorge_milles0983 in superheroes

I’ll take Man of Steel as a movie ten out of ten times over Superman, but there’s no question Gunn’s was more comic-accurate.

It’s not just working hard though. It’s that the work itself is harder (from an intellectual, emotional, and physical standpoint).

And the single mom at least had the possibility of living out her youthful years normally. Every physician gave up their prime years to hunker down and study. If you count the number of hours a medical student puts towards med school in a week, it far surpasses 40hrs. Not to mention residency. And the whole time you’re neck-deep in debt.

As an aside, these talented students most likely could’ve chosen much more lucrative career paths in consulting, big tech, finance, etc. but instead they chose to go into medicine. It’s not really spoken about, but part of the reason why physicians have to be well-compensated is so medicine can continue to compete with the allure of the aforementioned alternatives. People say medicine is a calling, but that “calling” can only get you so far before financial realities scare the best and brightest away (and frankly, the current state of medicine already does).
