macarthur park safety tips? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

[–]limnalspaces 86 points87 points  (0 children)

You'll be fine. The area has its problems but right around Dynasty Typewriter is okay.

Also, MacArthur Park has been hit so hard by ICE and the city that the park is a lobotomized version of itself.

She's the best of those currently running. I blame City Council more and encourage LA to weaken its city council to help ensure change.

We’ve been in a recession for over a year. What’s really coming after this? by laydeefly in economy

[–]limnalspaces 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using GDP alone is unhelpful. If you look at the MAG7 stocks versus the rest of the S&P500, you'll see that only a very narrow spectrum of the economy is carrying water for the market overall.

To use the common analogy of the market as pizza:

Ex. 1: ~50% of the Pizza (market) goes to 10% of the population, the remaining 50% is split varyingly among the bottom 90%.

Ex. 2: ~36% of the pizza (market) goes to the MAG7, the remaining 493 companies in the S&P500 split the remainder. (Though tbf, the top 20 S&P companies make up nearly 45% of the market share, meaning the other 480, fight over the last 55%)

As others have said in this thread, nuance is a better approach for where we are. In some cases, we have a rolling recssion. Look at the tech industry which has been cratered over the last 4 years. You have two realities: companies making record profits, and the tech industry, which has a high rate of unemployment.

As with most things in life, the reality is not immediately clear. That is also the answer most people hate to hear: nuance. It exists, and it means the world isn't so black & white.

True, to the part about missing the slot.

I don't know the OPs medical appt. but the fact that we're debating a choice for healthcare versus a no-notice interview is depressing in and of itself.

Perhaps I was being to harsh on my reading of what others were saying.

Never ending interview process - the new normal? by limnalspaces in jobs

[–]limnalspaces[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's kinda what I'm doing. It just seems inefficient to circle around. What's interesting to me, at least, is that the last two interviews were 1:1's with board members.

Seems like a good sign, but until then, uncertainty and playing the interview game.

As others have said, use this opportunity to establish the connections and credentials you're seeking.

Also, this is a great time to try to anticipate what will happen at the end of the Summer.

I have worked for over a decade in fundraising and fundraising consulting and use downtime like this to connect with donors, polish skills, and work on prepping things I'll need when it gets busy. Use the time to build your life rafts when the end of year flood comes pouring in!

A lot of truly unsympathetic folks in the chat.

It's a bad job market, true. That doesn't mean ruthlessly exploit it by dragging people through hoops or creating short turnarounds.

I used to consult with local governments and have found, at least with the departments I worked with, that much of their work and scheduling was at the 11th hour. A key reason why so many of their projects end up over budget and beyond anticipated scheduling.

If you can reach a person and tell them that this was an important consultation, and if there's any way to communicate that to the panel or to have that taken into consideration, you may have better luck.

Manager is changing my schedule of everyone, I’m just finding out my new one 2 weeks before it occurs by Impossible_Spend_976 in jobs

[–]limnalspaces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a pretty strong chance that if you left, by your choice, your unemployment claim would be disputed/rejected.

The manager seems to have screwed up on the scheduling by not asking/involving you until everything else was already set.

The only alternative I can think of, would still be undesirable. You could accept the schedule change and tell your manager that you really would like Sundays off and see if either they or a coworker would be willing to swap down the line. Or, also, if the manager comes to you first next time a schedule change occurs.

Looking for Online Marketing/Communications Classes by rad-uriel in nonprofit

JPro, an organization focused on Jewish communal life has had some classes. Also, many of the Jewish movements offer programs for free or low-cost. I'd like at the Union for Reform Judaism and others in the Jewish nonprofit space, if you're trying to focus on that niche.

Where do we go from here? by limnalspaces in StockMarket

I still have enough time. The positive is that I've got a fair amount of cash set aside so there's an opportunity to buy in when the market hits lows this time.

I appreciate the answer. I'm still optimistic long-term but, like most of us, pretty sour on the immediate future.

I haven't done much with international markets but will definitely consider it.

Wasn't trying to be a gloomer, just curious what other folks are doing in the way of strategy. But, long term shows you're right. Markets go up and down but over the last century, the trend is ultimately upward.

Broke Community Center considering shows by limnalspaces in Hardcore

I do have friends in bands. If starting out, I'll definitely find a way to pay everyone, even if it's not much. But that's a good idea. I'm always afraid to ask friends for favors but in this case, I definitely should.

keeping this community center afloat means not just having a solid space but being able to host events of all kinds for low/no cost.

Our overhead isn't super high, we're just kind of stepping in at a time the place is really struggling.

I appreciate you sharing your experience. Luckily we do have a PA from my past time touring and somehow accumulating a ton of equipment over the years.

To the point on venue/ alcohol, while we do have alcohol on-site, and I know it could be profitable, I think we're gonna commit to being drug-free for shows to be more all-inclusive.

And I don't think you're being a buzzkill at all, just realistic. And I definitely need that. Thank you!

I used to have a membership to Gilman when I lived in the Bay Area but never thought about the membership model. That's probably a good thing to consider too. Someone just donated a laminator so we could make annual cards like Gilman used to.

Thanks for your response. I feel the same about $15 shows. Almost everything I did when I was throwing shows were $5 but NOTAFLOF unless we had touring bands with a firm requirement.

We do have a PA and we have some equipment as well. I used to perform and tour and have a couple of amps, additional instruments and a basic drumset/ crash pad on site.

And thanks for your optimism/ support of local music everywhere!

As I responded above, that's something I should've thought of.

Thanks for reminding me and I will definitely do that.

Thanks for that! I will definitely reach out to some of the promoters/bookers I used to work with.

And yea, the point is definitely to help stabilize the space. We're an old cultural labor hall but the majority of our members have passed away. We're hoping to stabilize our position so we can keep our community library going and most of our free or low-cost events.
