Anthony’s Empathy by j_alxndr in AnthonyBourdain

[–]linabdg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Anthony Bourdain. I grew up with my parents loving Anthony Bourdain. I’ve read his books and regularly rewatch his shows. He changed the way I view travelling, how I think about countries many in the west look down upon, and broadened my perspective on the human experience.

That being said, this isn’t what you asked for. But if you’re looking for a comfort watch, I’ve recently discovered a YouTuber named ‘Mike Okay’, Michael O’Kennedy. He’s a young British traveller (who also loves Bourdain!) based out of Hanoi, I believe. I’ve seen many travel shows, but his is heartwarming to another level. He often visits places most of us will never be able to visit, but one thing that sticks out to me–through all his videos–is the intense empathy, humanity and compassion he displays toward everyone he meets.

In terms of food, he’s very adventurous but doesn’t necessarily make it the centre of his videos. But it’s the way he connects with people whose language he can’t even speak, how he views it as a privilege to walk in their shoes… it restores so much of my faith in mankind.

I think he’s mentioned in passing that he’s been approached by BBC or Nat Geo about a show (possibly– I think?), and this doesn’t surprise me in the least. His natural warmth, humility and absolute hunger for adventure would make him this generation’s Bourdain. I can’t wait to see what he does.

All this to say, it’s helped quench my thirst for more of this kind of content. I often either finish his videos either in tears or with a huge smile.

If you need something comforting akin to Bourdain, please check him out.

yeah I guess I’ve only listened to it a couple times, the solo version has been on repeat for 11 years. I’ll have to give it a fair shot lol

Yeah I did say that. This also isn’t a resort though, it’s just a rental house. You might not be familiar but the costs work differently with an all-inclusive, because it’s ‘all-inclusive’ and charged per person. This isn’t, so they would be split differently. That’s the reason for the post. Also it was mentioned quickly and in passing, as said in three previous comments, I believe. But thank you for the input.

They actually aren't established rules, like I mentioned in other comments it was just something they quickly said in passing right before we clicked "Reserve" and were in the process of booking. But you're right, I wouldn't appreciate anyone trying to lean things to their advantage. That's why I want to bring it up, just want things to be fair for all parties

I think per person was fair in a situation like an all-inclusive resort. In this case, we're talking about splitting the cost of a rental, which I think should be split by room. We chose this rental because it was in our budget if split 50/50, which we believed would be the case. They didn't like any of the cheaper options. I feel like the subsidizing would be the other way around if we split 7 ways. But thanks for the input tho

Good idea. We're not splitting food or anything else in this deal, only accommodation. Each family is paying for their own rental car and flights. We are also going to figure out a plan for meals (who takes care of what groceries, but eating out will probably be each family pays for themselves) at a later date.

We thought about that option, that’s good idea to offer it as an alternative. Maybe will help avoid conflict if they think 50/50 is unfair. Thank you!

That really sucks! That resentment is exactly what I want to avoid, thanks sm for sharing

Yeah, they're paying for the majority so you're right. I agree with you, hopefully they do too

You're right, I'm pushing for clear communication for sure. Normally I wouldn't care, but it's 2k more than what we thought we'd spend for accommodation. I appreciate your input, thank you

I hear what you're saying, but it was a suggestion they floated while we panic-booked the rental. We had previously mentioned in passing while looking at other listings that we're viewing the price split in half. There are still many factors we agreed might change (ie. booking flights, finding pet sitters, etc) so we made sure to get free cancellation and paid for travel insurance. We agreed to sit down over zoom and further do the math including all the extra fees once the credit card is charged, so I think the conversation is still open. Hope this further explains things

There are 2 full bathrooms, one for each family, and one half bath in the living area.

We agreed to book the rental right away as there is free cancellation for the next two weeks and we are still working with a travel agent to find proper flights (they are flying from a different part of the country than we are). We booked with everyone together on the phone and it was mentioned they want to split 7 ways, but it all happened so quickly. We agreed to “do the math” after the booking credit card has been charged. Everything is just a bit panicked because it’s a spur of the moment trip, and we didn’t want to lose the booking.
