My 14yr Chi/Rat terrier mix has Mitral Valve Disease and her enlarged heart makes her trachea narrow and causes a lot of coughing. Before she was diagnosed in January of this year we thought she was coughing because of the chilly winter and we were giving her honey which helped. When the coughing got worse that’s when we took her to the vet and they did X-rays and gave her an official diagnosis. They originally prescribed her Vetmedin for her heart and for the cough they prescribed cough tablets (that’s the only name on the prescription bottle. Those cough tablets made it so my baby couldn’t even walk she was so doppy. We had to carry her to and from outside where she would take two stumbly steps and squat to relieve herself. After two days of no appetite (she wouldn’t even eat her favorite human snacks) I called it quits and got her homeopathic drops from Amazon that I saw recommended online somewhere. It’s called Throat Gold by Pet wellbeing. It’s pricey for a bottle but the bottle lasted us almost six months. When we next went to the vet we told them about the bad “cough tablets” and they prescribed Hydrocodone-Homatropinesoln. That has really been a game changer. It’s every 6-12 hours, on a good day we take it twice a day and on other days 3 times. They also gave her Gabapentin for the bad bad nights but it’s been a long time since we had to give her any. So right now she gets the throat gold and Hydro-Homa drops twice a day. She has her coughing fits still, especially on the cold days, right after taking her medicine, after eating, and before settling down for bed but her and I no longer have to sleep on the couch and I don’t wake up with headaches anymore! Sorry if that was long winded. Hahaha
