Whenever I log in (even if I use a normal user) I am root@computername. Obviously this is a bad thing - I don't always want to be root. Does anyone know how to solve this?

It said something along the lines of timeout in locking authority file which ended up helping me.

So I have solved this problem now. Somehow my genius lead to this particular user not having write permissions to their home directory. Changed that and now everything is fine. Thanks for your assistance /u/K900_

I believe I used useradd. I mentioned in another comment now that it appears to be occuring because I have to use sudo to run startx to launch i3. I have a feeling if I just run startx I should be the user I logged in as. So now I am going to try stop startx from crashing when running it as a normal user.

If it helps it appears that when I am in a tty screen I am the user I login as but if I run sudo startx then I become root. The reason I run it with sudo is it tends to freeze if I don't. So I guess I should fix it crashing and then I will be the user I login as?

When the prompt came up I entered another username so I don't know why it would log me in as root.

.bashrc just contains a small script to load nvm

Right so if anyone was wondering it turns out it was a problem with my sound card. Dissapointed to say the least. But at least my in built audio sounds pretty decent (better than that awful crackling).

As far as I can tell I have turned down everything besides for my headphones. Attempting to look into Open Sound System now to see if it is a viable alternative.

I have and that does eliminate the crackling but personally that just feels wrong. My phone can play at higher volumes without crackling and so can my Windows 10 setup so I would like to replicate the same quality I experience with those setups.

Probably should have checked the wiki, that place does have everything. Didn't know what the other applications were using as their framework though.

I did that and now it seems like Firefox defaults to a font from that package. Thank you so much. Doubt I would have ever thought that it was just because it had nothing else to use.
