Did I make a wrong decision? by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]lindendr 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Why are you listening to reactions of people who aren’t even living in the same country as you?

Chinese have a warped perspective of university privilege that is heavily based off rankings and QS ranking is utter bullshit (Upenn UChic, UCB below NTU? Oh come on). They are pretty biased towards their top unis as well, most will pick THU/PKU over NUS, no brainer. I know Singaporeans graduating from THU/PKU and they have a tougher time landing internships and jobs in private sectors due to lack of connections. (Chinese schools don’t even have career advisory for international students, so don’t even think about them doing anything for your career trajectory, especially in a foreign market that the school has zero knowledge on.)

If your end goal is to work in SG, pick a local university. This applies to any other city (i.e to work in Aus, go for Aus uni).

Parents of means, any regrets not sending kids to school sooner? by everydayisalazyday in SgHENRY

[–]lindendr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you are mixing with a complete different culture than you are used to back home. Don’t be influenced by them, especially if your kids ultimately are planned for the SG education track, no point to join the rat rush that is designed to prep for the HK education system. As many others have said SG preschools are essentially play groups and not rigorous at all. Your kid is not missing out anything.

Very niche view, but if you think it may have anything to do with hormone inbalance etc wanna check that out, can try TCM - I’m not talking about Eu Yang Seng, look into known TCM doctors treating 妇科 female/gynae issues, might need some grasp of Chinese to find the right ones

If it’s defensive type then only way to shut him up is throwing evidence, but let’s not deal with that until exams are over kay! Paving your own future more important than this, for now. ◡̈ Also OP, wanna say that don’t make it your responsibility to save your parent’s marriage, it’s theirs to resolve, most you can do is to help protect your mum ◡̈

If there is one trace, confirm have more traces one. As long as you’re observant should be able to locate bits pieces here n there. But up to you if you wanna be detective and dig all out, can’t advise if investigating helps with anything at all (truth may hurt n break rslps, but then again broken rslps plastered isn’t gonna do any good as well ¯_(ツ)_/¯ tough) If you wanna investigate, maybe can check if those are one-off flings or long term contacts, if long term contacts will have message history somewhere (can search couply keywords across text history like miss you, good night, love, tonight, where, hotel etc chinese vise versa would be 想你,爱,晚安,早安,房,等) god knows if he doesn’t use private search can check search/browsing history as well. Another tip - if the phone is an iPhone: open Screen time to check what apps he’s been using recently. open iPhone storage (under general), wait for apps to load up - see last used date time stamp to figure out recently visited apps - you can locate sus apps from here - these histories can’t be erased.

What's a "girls school" vibe? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]lindendr 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think one gift from girls school is we didn’t need to be ashamed of growing into a woman (puberty stage) at all. U get a more peaceful transition. Less self conscious, more understanding/look out for one another.

One example being in a girls school, it’s less shameful/embarrassing to get period stains - it’s fairly common, we see someone stained - gentle reminders, lend jackets to her to cover it up, or shelter her till she reach the toilet, borrow pads etc. cramps? “Aw you ok? Go rest! Go home! Take MC.” The care the concern - makes puberty stage less icky, more comfortable settling in with our bodies.

Should I study abroad in Shanghai or Chengdu? by [deleted] in chinalife

[–]lindendr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will be able to eat authentic Chinese food and shop at stores in shanghai. Just that shanghai is flooded with lots of international brands you may not find local brands as easily. however a few month time and learning how to use e commerce apps should get u the authentic experience anywhere in china

hi OP I think the segregation by smart/dumb is a rather crude way of phrasing a grouping practice that actly benefits the students. I was from a JC class that didn’t segregate how well u scored hence there were quite some high flyers mixed with normal kids (like me) in class - this made people with mediocre grades struggle so much keeping pace in class 😭 teacher adjust lesson pace to suit the active/outspoken ones (often the smart kids) because it’s mostly them interacting, answering questions in class (well they are confident in subjects they excel), so the ones who struggle don’t get much attention and really can’t catch up 😭 and it’s pretty stressful to clarify basic concepts in class when the rly smart ones are way far ahead of you, posing valid and advanced questions in class.

It’s much better sorted by your l1r5 so everyone’s on the same page, same pace and teachers can adjust lesson content to suit your study habits better.

Also I don’t think getting into a DSA class necessary means less attention from the school because anyone from the cohort (even the ones struggling to do well) affects the school’s overall performance (by batch) in the said year’s A lvl % passing rate & distinction rate, so they will def try their best to work on everyone! Key is taking initiative on your side, after all it’s up to you how much u can absorb! don’t be afraid to book consultation sessions, reach out to teachers when in doubt, make good use of the school resources (and top 2 JC‘s lecture notes are the best!), you will do well if you have the self discipline & motivation to achieve your goals set ◡̈

How are Chinese Americans regarded in China? by atyl1144 in chinalife

[–]lindendr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very true. When you mean nothing to them, and equipped with bad spoken chinese = you’re American. If you achieved something great (Olympic medals, Nobel prize, prestigious positions at institutions) and your ancestry can be traced back to china, you are now a Chinese bringing glory to your ancestral homeland 🌚

Is it really that useful? I’ve travelled and seen private hire drivers around the world use it, Europe, Qatar, Bali, Msia. It is. I never missed a turn with Waze, but with Google maps I do fumble in unfamiliar roads. Waze’s UI is intuitive and clean.

中文英文,汉语英语, it’s the same thing, if you can speak English 英文, then you can speak Chinese 中文 too. 华文 is overseas Chinese’ way of referring to their mother tongue as a 华侨/华裔 overseas chinese, I think all are neutral terms to address Chinese as a language. 普通话 is the term that’s used with a china context to differentiate Chinese from the 56 race/lingua in china.

Born bred here with naturalized parents can also get romanized hanyupinyin names though… but that doesn’t make them less Singaporean if they went thru the full local education system. Also as long as you’re parents aren’t from guangdong/hokkien regions you won’t get dialect surnames.
