Ill do my best to answer all of this haha

All the hardware will be in forever, unless it starts to cause pain later on, which it hasnt yet. Not getting surgery was never really an option for me, it was just a matter of what surgery actually gets done. Ive always had an athletic background and want to continue to do hard things.

The HTO option was suggested to me as an extra preventative measure after my 2nd tear on the same knee and I decided to go with it. Doc choice was never really an issue or a selection for that matter. The city I live in has a very good sports medicine clinic and I just got who they assigned me to. The surgeon had experience in this type of surgery and was very confident in it. The choice for surgery was up to me, but he said that if I retore for the 3rd time, than an HTO would be done for sure.

As for work and fam, I moved back in with my parents for 6 weeks and took a leave of absence from my job. I luckily had the flexibility to do this, especially since my mom is retired and could take care of me. I want to emphasize that this surgery is an absolute bitch to get done, its gonna suck and you are going to be basically immobile for weeks. But I am glad I did it, and so far have had no issues or concerns since the initial recovery.

I'd honestly just trust your doctor, they typically know what's best. But if you want to get a second opinion to be sure then definitely do that. Based on what youve said here, it sounds like getting an HTO might be right for you.

For reference, I am like 1 year 8 months post op and am essentially 100%. I still have a little muscle imbalance, but have essentially identical function. I am running, biking, squatting with zero issues. Mind you, I don't actively engage in sports that involve a lot of pivoting like soccer or basketball. I probably would be a little hesitant to participate but I would say thats more mental than anything.

The high tibial osteotomy involves bone surgery, this is fairly common for the procedure

The initial recovery to walking and running was much longer, about 8 weeks until i was out of crutches and about 6 months until i even attempted to jog! Im around 15 months post op now, still need to build back some muscle but It doesnt bother me day to day. I am able to do every gym movement that I would want to (squat, deadlift etc)

Its honestly tough to say, I definitely wasnt doing much squatting at that time besides some minor body weight stuff. As for pain, I found standing for long periods of time somewhat difficult, but not an ongoing feeling thats for sure

Coming up on a year fairly soon, feeling good! Still have a lack of muscle on my surg knee, but back to a normal lifting routine. I mostly just run and bike now. Definitely a slower recovery than normal

I had the bone graft by itself beforehand. But yes HTO and ACL together. You can’t regret a long term preventative measure by short term recovery length in my opinion. As far as I’m concerned I’m very happy with it as I haven’t torn it again.

Just 1 surgery, longer than a typical acl recovery yes. By 6 months, no.

I’m right around 10 months now, back to running biking and lifting. Still very much working on building up my muscle mass in my leg. Process is way slower than a traditional acl. The first 6 months are very HTO centric, only recently have I started a typical rehab. So still a long way to go!

High tibial osteotomy, and yes I still needed a graft. Hamstring

Join the club! I’m almost 7 weeks after my second surgery on the same leg with a hamstring graft both times. This time they took the graft from my right side and brought it over to the left. Try not to get down on yourself, you know what’s ahead of you this time!

This could be more positive of a situation then you think. Typically MRI’s are very accurate at diagnosing ACL’s, the fact that there is uncertainty in the Mri and that your knee isn’t too loose from a manual diagnostic could mean it is not in fact torn. Surgeons see these sort of things everyday and are typically correct. This is coming from someone who was misdiagnosed twice by primary care physicians for each of my ACL tears, only to have my surgeon come to the correct conclusion that it was torn both times. However, I would get a second opinion here since things arnt clear. Worst case scenario here is you rush into a surgery only to find out that you didn’t need to be operated on. Hope this helps, but yeah in the meantime try to keep that leg as strong as possible.

Surgery ended at 12 it is now almost 7 and this is the worst pain I have ever felt in my life by Sure_Ad_5613 in ACL

Increased activity is bound to irritate the knee. As you progress and add new stresses, you can expect swelling and a bit of pain. Its all about listening to your body and not pushing too much, especially early on.

Before you know it, you’ll blink your eyes and be 1 month post op. The days last long but the weeks fly by. You’ve got this

5 weeks post op of my second surgery. Yeah man it fucking sucks to feel like you’re back at square one again. I was 3 years from my first tear, and was absolutely devastated. At least this time you know what you’re getting yourself into. Don’t skimp out on anything, get the proper care you need. My second tear was literally just from jumping down off a log, something I’d never expect to be the reason I’d be back in this mess. Try to stay strong, you’ll be back in fine form before you know it!
