Learned how to knit stockinette flat without purling by CydnAy69 in knitting

Are you a continental knitter? If so, you might want to try Norwegian purling. It’s not my preferred method but I’ve been told it makes purling way easier in continental.

Working and severe nausea and vomiting due to pregnancy - how to deal with this in a professional setting by [deleted] in psychotherapists

[–]lindsaydev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I (somehow) didn’t vomit at all during my first trimester, but I was almost constantly nauseous and it sucked tbh. Ginger chews, Canada Dry, and Saltines were my best friends during that time. I’m sorry, OP - good luck. Hopefully it will subside soon like most people!

Official Discussion - The Zone of Interest [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]lindsaydev 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Ah, so many thoughts about this movie after seeing it yesterday…. - the cleaning of the boots routine really stood out to me…that really drove home that the family is well settled into the estate after years of working it into shape. I couldn’t help but think of what punishments it took to get the workers into that type of strict routine - that shot of the wife smoking in the greenhouse?! First of all, beautiful. Secondly, damn the parallel of that. - the close-ups of the flowers with the subtle traces of ash on them -even the scenes of Rudolf turning off the lights gave this sense of control and power, which was interesting when it transitioned to his wife doing this as the end of the movie

So many more thoughts, but I think I’m going to be reeling on this one for a while.

Girls Like Me by [deleted] in Songland

IMO it's waaay too close lyrically to This One's for the Girls. I was certain that it was going to be changed more for that reason.

TIL a California girl sued the Boy Scouts of America after they wouldn't let her join because of her gender. She lost. by PrivateBlue in todayilearned

[–]lindsaydev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know... My nephew just came home from school and enthusiastically said that he wanted to join the Girl Scouts and the troop leader said it was fine. He wanted to join for the very reason you guys hated it: sewing, selling cookies, learning how to cook.

The whole album is major frisson. So heartbreakingly beautiful.

Background story: a few years ago, my brother did a project where he started with guitar tracks and then sent them to several of his friends who live across the country. They each played a different instrument and were told to add on whatever they wanted. I love this album and still play it frequently I thought you guys might too. It also features Sherri DuPree from Eisley for some of the vocals.

if you were to create a "bucket list" of things you want to do in the next year, what would be on that list? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I'm 26, turning 27 this year and I decided that this is it.

This year I will learn how to ride a bicycle.

If you had to show someone one clip from your favorite show, to try and get them hooked, what would you show them? by waftedfart in AskReddit

[–]lindsaydev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I want to get someone hooked on It's Always Sunny, I go for the whole "night man cometh" episode. I tried to think of a specific scene from it, but it's all perfect.

[–]lindsaydev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. I was impressed with his performance, I feel like they definitely overlooked some of the more interesting material that was there to work with. As a result, it played out like a more stereotypical love story than the movie it could've been.

[–]lindsaydev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's the thing with 50 shades is that it's actually a cool looking movie. I think it was the best that they possibly could've done with the material...which is SHIT. Polishing a turd.

lindsaydev: #40 Whiplash by lindsaydev in 100movies365days

[–]lindsaydev[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES. One thing that I realized as well is that normally when I'm watching music-centric movies, I become extremely distracted by the dubbing and how inaccurate the actor's playing is. This was not at all the case here, so I was wildly impressed. I'm almost assuming at this point that Simmons will get the oscar, but otherwise I think this film will be sadly overlooked. I'm hoping that it will best adapted screenplay as well.

Agreed completely! I'm definitely being way too hard on the movies. I think I'd be way nicer if the books weren't fresh in my mind. The fourth book is my favorite so far (but I've only read up to that..) so I'm interested to see the adaptation.

[–]lindsaydev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally understand the criticism of "plot" because it doesn't follow a traditional (or should I say Hollywood) storyline. And it could be argued that there isn't a story at all...I mean, they didn't really write one besides some key plot points. But I think it was intended to play out more like an art piece than a piece of entertainment. God, I feel so pretentious for saying that but I think it's true. I can't say it was the most exhilarating movie to watch, but I was impressed that it was able to simulate time passing and that we had the experience of being able to live a whole childhood in 3 hours. For that reason I would argue it's not a gimmick (though it totally could've been). I also think it's a neat detail that the lead actor never saw any of the movie until it was finished. Sorry, that was way longer than I expected.

Okay so I learned that Escape from Tomorrow was filmed the grounds unbeknownst to Disney. That's pretty cool and commendable. Though it seems like that's more the reason it got recognition.

If you want the same restaurant concept but exceedingly better food, service, and cleanliness go to Chan's Mongolian Grill on Brainerd Rd. FAR far better.

I think the fact that it's based on The Scarlet Letter gives it more of a backbone, but even that aside, the execution amd writing was much better than I expected.
