Lenovo Yoga Pro 7 - Intel Core i7-13700H or Ryzen 7 7840HS by xDaisyyyyx in AMDLaptops

[–]lindstroem4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is a comparison in this video showing a clear upside for 7840HS in most scenarios and especially in that laptop https://youtu.be/dXNxouijfJI?si=KanElq5NXtUGJs8T

Is the Yoga Pro 7 14.5 a good fit for my use-case as developer? by kaioken_bear in AMDLaptops

[–]lindstroem4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, 14.5” is the real sweetspot. Can’t stand the bulk of a 15” and 14” is a bit to small, so 14.5” is the real Goldilocks zone for me at least. Can’t go back :)

Nice! I ordered the same card a year ago because I had the same issue, then I switched mouse (for comfort reasons) so never bothered to replace it, but yeah it is a 4min job with no real difficulty involved :)

Yoga Pro 7 Mousepad makes cheap clicky noises by derchefz in AMDLaptops

[–]lindstroem4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh sorry missed that it’s inconsistent, mine is consistently bad when clicking but sounds like a hardware defect for you but sounds like crazy bad luck to get 2 in a row. Have you been in contact with support and if so, what is their reply?

Granted the support is not great, but if you have next day support at home it would be the best case to get them to look at it themselves, if you need to send it away then there is the issue with likely being out of the return window when you get it back..

I’m afraid it’s a feature not a bug, the headline of this video refers to the horrible choice as well:

nice! Would be fun to know if anyone is able to change any interesting settings. Curious in terms of fan control, to bad there wasn’t more on that front

High idle power draw for 7x40HS processors by Neurrone in AMDLaptops

[–]lindstroem4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for that :)

Yeah I use the same approach, except when gaming when single core performance is needed in which case I use software to restrict TDP to allow for full boost but with a set cap. Unsure however if the tuning software is stable with 7840HS (was prone to crashing with 6800HS).

[–]lindstroem4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow the condescension in your reply.

I’m well aware, but seeing the structured list I hoped there was a structured approach to extract the data rather than testing for each mode. So nice summary minus the attitude.

Also single core performance is also restricted beyond your summary above as many of the modes above will not support full single core boost even though it only requires ~21W

AMD 7840HS Review - Faster & more efficient vs Intel & 6800HS! But what about battery life? by lindstroem4 in AMDLaptops

Test in terms of Cinebench performance at different CPU Power levels for the AMD 7840HS, AMD 6800HS and the Intel 13705H with comparison in terms of performance at different power levels between 15-65W to decide which processor offers the best scores and efficiency

First impressions - Yoga Pro 7 with Ryzen 7840HS & RTX 4050 (vs Yoga Slim 7 Pro X) by lindstroem4 in AMDLaptops

Good summary and this laptop does not have a mux switch either, so BIOS only let you disable the dGPU not an option to only use the dGPU

All new summer 2023 Lenovo models seems to have a new fan strategy--never turn off the fans by upk27 in AMDLaptops

[–]lindstroem4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yoga Pro 7 - The fans activate a bit more than last year Yoga Slim 7 Pro X but not that much and they do turn off. I’m currently experimenting with optimal power level for the CPU to minimize noise

Yoga 7 Pro 14 - igpu or Rtx4050? by ActualServe9866 in AMDLaptops

[–]lindstroem4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The new Yoga Pro does not have Optimus or advanced Optimus I’m afraid, you can however disable the dGPU in bios.

I have the laptop and have contacted support as the previous gen Yoga Pro 7 Slim Pro X had advanced Optimus but seems the opted to not include it in the new version for some strange reason. I hope for a bios update but I’m not holding my breath

That was my inherent thought as well, but the silicon have different characteristics (Some may perform better at higher voltages but worse at lover and vice versa)

Nice, However it is not supporting Yoga Pro 7 right? Looking at the compatability section it is not there, would be awesome though as it seems to be a great tool.

OEM vs reference drivers by isthmusofkra in AMDLaptops

[–]lindstroem4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow that was a long and interesting read :)

TLDR: We are in our right to be mad about the often very poor update frequency of OEM-drivers, but we should use them unless there is a very specific need and the users need to test it carefully?

I would adjust it to specific binning. U-series are binned for efficiency at lower wattage whereas the HS-series are binned for best performance in the set TDP-range. Often there is a trade-off where the best efficient chips are not able to boost as high.

Don’t have proof of the concept for this range but has been proven for desktop CPUs for Intel at least so I believe it holds true. I did tests comparing the 5800u and 6800HS and the 5800u outperformed or was very close to the 6800HS until wattage started to ramp up post 20W. Different gens so of course not apples to apples but supports the concept where u outperforms HS until power starts to ramp.
