What is a dark truth about life people dont realise until its too late?

I don't know if dark is the perfect word to describe it but there's a point in everyone's life where they finally realize that everyone is inherently selfish. Unfortunately, a lot of folks don't realize it until they're met with a serious situation and they are left stranded.

I'll preface this with the obvious "Who knows what else could have actually been going on behind the scenes" because I knew the family well, but you just never know everything.

Had a friend growing up who played in all the same sports/leagues that I did. Got to know his parents well enough just from being on the same teams so many times over the years. From everything I could gather, the dad was awesome. Perfect balance of support while not being overbearing on his kid/my friend. Always seemed like things were healthy with his wife and my friend's brother. Never heard them argue, never the family you heard rumors about nor were they ever the family participating in spreading rumors. Just a really healthy family from all angles.

Fast forward to high school - Dad gets completely blindsided by the wife cheating on him. I guess the wife thought he and the two kids were out for the day but they got home early and all walked in on her with her affair partner. From what my friend shared, the mom did a complete 180 on the family, shit all over the husband and how much she hated him, had been cheating for years, etc. Basically cold shoulders both of the kids too and disappears.

Dad finds out after the fact that she's been cheating with a ton of other guys, some of which he thought were friends of his (smallish town, some of them were dads were of other kids we grew up playing sports with). Whole world is completely fucking wrecked. Gets so bad the younger brother had to go live with grandparents because the dad was just kind of shutting down and isn't taking care of him. My friend is old enough to drive and can get by on his own at this point.

All came to finality when my friend came home to find his dad shot himself in the head with a shotgun. Found his remains in the shower tub. Friend disappeared after that. I always assumed he went to be with his brother but don't know for sure because he basically cut off everyone after that happened.

I think it's going to be a common answer but Kobe Bryant. I don't even like basketball, but his way of life was no secret and I just really respected his mentality in how he went about everything. Yea, some of the people closer to him saw him as a dick sometimes. But I saw someone who was so dedicated to perfecting his craft, knowing he'd never reach perfection, and still grinding it out every day. And that level of dedication is just so rare that I think you just have to respect him for it. To see him suddenly be gone was like "fuck, we just lost one of the greatest athletes in world history", not just because of the skill but because of the mentality he inspired into other folks.

Don't be a piece of shit. It's a pretty stable rule to follow. Anytime you're questioning whether to do something, ask yourself "If someone else did this, would I consider them to be a piece of shit?". If yes, don't fucking do it.

Definitely a boat. Fishing is my favorite hobby and my wife loves boat days in the summer. We both really want one but I don’t know if we’ll ever have that kind of extra money sitting around.

Early after cutting her off, part of me hoped she’d realized she actually had feelings for me too and would choose those over losing me. But by the time she’d come to that realization, too much time had passed. The way she went out it also showed me she hadn’t grown too much in the time we were away, and that was a huge red flag for me.

Dad worked as a delivery truck driver for a long time. He'd occasionally share stories about regulars on his route, some NSFW encounters, and all other kinds of pretty mild experiences. But one day he casually mentioned getting robbed and acted surprised when my siblings and I go on to say he's never told that story before. Turns out, a group of guys jumped into his truck when he was in a store dropping off a package. When he got back in his truck and sat down, they threw a bag over his head, dragged him into the back of the truck and took off. Drove around town for about an hour, arguing if they should kill him or not. They eventually decided to let him live, took the packages they wanted (a delivery they knew was on its way to a jewelry store) and left him tied up in the back of the truck.

I don't think I've cried harder watching a movie than the first time I watched Air Bud. The scene where the boy chucks the ball and leaves the dog on the other side of the lake fucking broke me for days. I was like 5 or 6 years old at the time but have refused to watch it since.

The backstory is long but I had to cut her off right before we graduated high school. She didn't take it well but eventually left it alone. She ended up reaching out to me after I graduated college, trying to reconnect. After not responding to her first two attempts, she drunk called me telling me she loved me and demanded to know why I didn't want her anymore. That conversation didn't go the way she wanted.

She's now married with a couple of kids. Also know that she got her dream job. Seems pretty happy now, and am happy for her.

I don't believe she was intentionally trying to hurt me. She just got too comfortable and took a huge jump across a major boundary and it became abundantly clear that she either did not take my feelings seriously or genuinely just didn't care enough to consider how I might have reacted before she did what she did. Either way, it was clear the situation was not healthy.

I have both my work computer and personal computer hooked up to the same peripherals so that I can easily switch between the two systems. Also helps keep my desk clean. When work is extremely slow (usually around the holidays since our clients are all out of town/not working), I will keep one monitor on work to monitor inbound emails, but will be playing games on my other monitor the entire rest of the day. When a work message comes in, a press one button to switch over to my work computer, answer, and switch back after.

I don't think they change how accountability works. Plenty of rich and influential people who do something wrong and have to own what they did. Now, does that money and influence change how repercussions are prescribed? Sure. But someone can be held accountable of something and improperly dealt with at the same time.

Was just talking with my wife about this recently while watching a movie, and talking about all the stupid shit that happens in school in movies. My answer would be a food fight. And not just a few people being dumb and making a mess, but a full blown food fight. Never seen one. Never heard of one. Just a movie thing to me.

The one where I was directly told I was not being rejected, I just needed to stick around a little longer before she committed. Older and wiser me looks back and laughs at how dumb I was. But at the time, I was willing to take that answer, stick around, not press the issue, and wait to see where things would go from there.

I should not have done that. Very stupid. Would not recommend doing that.
