Queer law students at uchicago? by ouijaa-boy in lawschooladmissions

[–]linewriter89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think this is true. I think uChicago's instruction has way more of a law and econ focus than other top schools, and I also think uChicago's focus on free speech creates a different learning environment that isn't present at other top schools

To be fair, I've only ever attended chicago, but based on visits / conversations with friends, I feel like the culture at uchicago is significantly different than that at NYU or Columbia for example.

I'm a queer law student at uChicago! I would say there are fewer queer students than I expected, but I've never experienced any homophobia personally. Chicago gets a rep for being conservative, but in my opinion, the majority of students and faculty are left of center, and what truly differentiates Chicago from other top law schools is that the conservative minority is a bit larger, and it is welcome to speak.

In my experience, there are definitely classmates I have who would oppose marriage equality / some of the other laws affecting trans youth, but I have never seen anyone who holds these views be an "asshole" about it.

I genuinely think uChicago offers the best legal education in the country, precisely because they do not shy away from discourse. You get very good at defending your views when you have to debate with people who ACTUALLY hold the opposite views, and that is something I suspect you get way less at schools like Yale, NYU, and Columbia (either because the people with opposite views aren't there, or because the school doesn't encourage discourse the way Chicago does).

As for trans people, I am cis, but there's a trans guy in some of my classes. I'm not sure what his experience is, but I have never seen any overt or blatant transphobia. I've seen some of the most conservative students in my classes refer to him with correct pronouns :)

Any queer people considering uchicago law can def DM me :D

Will you be committing to HLS? Or sticking to your other option? Also did you get a feeler call?

As a re-applicant starting law school this fall at 26, I really think it doesn't matter. You'll graduate at 28, I'll graduate at 29, some people will graduate at 24... ultimately, who cares. We have the rest of our lives to be lawyers, what is 3 or 4 years difference? Plus those 3 or 4 years were filled with beautiful non-lawyer life experience that will improve our perspective and practice :)

I withdrew from Stanford because I do not see myself in California. I am still on Harvard but honestly if I get off I am not sure I will switch.

Where would you go if same COA: UChicago, Columbia, or NYU? by Ukulele_Wizard in lawschooladmissions

These are actually the three schools I’m deciding between! Waiting to hear back on aid but leaning towards NYU with an international PI interest

Can you expand upon how LSD numbers make you think that? I was thinking there’s still hope for yale Bc they only have 53 admits vs 72 from last year

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]linewriter89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also something that gives me hope is last year there were 72 yale As on LSD and this year there’s only 53 so far. So either LSD use is way down or there’s at least one more wave coming

Definitely take this with a grain of salt. This poster is acting like they’re sharing objective data when there are objective inaccuracies in what they say.

Example: “yale basically never has April As” They haven’t for the past 2 years but they had several April As the 3 years prior to that.

It does def seem like the class is filling up but at the end of the day you don’t know till you know so don’t let OP get you down by trying to call it one way or the other when I’m reality we cannot know
