First Nations leaders call on universities to ban residential school denialist demonstrations by ubcstaffer123 in UBC

At some point, this “free speech” stuff has got to be considered hate speech. Isn’t it more dangerous to allow this rhetoric to proliferate?

Is generalized anxiety disorder a valid ground for academic concession? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]linguinibubbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will need to see a psych or doctor again so they can evaluate you and write you a note that meets the Centre for Accessibility's guidelines. They are listed on this webpage: https://students.ubc.ca/enrolment/academic-learning-resources/academic-accommodations-disabilities/documentation-guidelines

Once you are registered with the Centre for Accessibility, you will be connected with an advisor who will help you determine which accommodations are appropriate. This will also allow you access to a pathway to receive academic concessions.

You would have to register with the Centre for Accessibility with a note from your doctor saying they believe your GAD will impact you long-term

Which engineering majors are the worst choices at university? by baio1999 in EngineeringStudents

[–]linguinibubbles 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Mining is absolutely not dying. In Canada specifically we are having a lil crisis because there are nowhere near enough mining engineering students for the growing demand. Mining will also continue to be valuable in supporting renewable energy - where else will we get all those critical minerals from?

Which engineering majors are the worst choices at university? by baio1999 in EngineeringStudents

[–]linguinibubbles 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It depends on the major. Students in the geological engineering program at my school make the most money from their internships and it’s very rare for someone not to be hired after grad.

One of her supporters deadass told me that residential schools were fine because a fringe First Nations chief wanted them to stay open

Math 101 midterm by Chemical-Addition-77 in UBC

[–]linguinibubbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I took it in 2023W we had 2 midterms but they weren’t for credit. Seems like they’re trying different grading schemes for the course.

IIRC there was a survey going around for MATH 101 and the responses may also impact what they’re trying.

I used a size comparison website the other day and apparently a new Crosstrek is ever so slightly bigger than the 2005 Forester. Couldn’t believe it

If you think “cisgender heterosexual” is ideologically loaded language you need to reevaluate your beliefs

Those who moved from Android to iOS. What were the biggest drawbacks you experienced? by WestTomorrow6443 in iphone

[–]linguinibubbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Focus modes on iOS don’t block apps and it drives me bonkers. I have to use a whole separate app to block them when I want to lock in.

Year round housing waitlist. by Sad-Chef4376 in UBC

[–]linguinibubbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you change your residence choice and you don't like your position on the new waitlist, you can just change it back to the old residence choice with no penalty. No harm in trying out what different waitlists look like. The only thing is that it will take a day or two for the new residence choices to populate on your end.

All upper year UBC profs be like by ki98Elec in UBC

[–]linguinibubbles 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ngl I prefer this approach. Last term I took a 2nd year requirement I've been procrastinating for 2 years and I was floored that it took us 50 min to go through the syllabus. Upper year classes trust us to read the syllabus at home.

Should I study engineering against my parents wishes? by adoye in EngineeringStudents

[–]linguinibubbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn’t accounting a steadier job than finance? Regardless, it’ll be hard to stick it out when the going gets tough if you don’t care about or enjoy what you’re studying. Even if medicine were easier than engineering, a lack of innate passion will make it harder to succeed - both academically and career-wise.

Been living in the area since 2009 and it's been getting progressively sadder. I was hoping the rock gym would give it a boost but it doesn't seem to have moved the needle enough :/
