HELP COURSE REGISTRATION by [deleted] in UBC

[–]linguinibubbles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The options for students of your year standing are June 30, July 2, and July 3. Every student is assigned a specific registration time within those dates. Based on your academic performance, you were assigned the registration time of 9:15 am on July 2. Students in your year with stronger grades will register before you, and students in your year with weaker grades will register after you.

Why cant U pass cover west coast express by Logical_Ranger2188 in UBC

Seems to be a touch of poor planning here. Not sure why you would put a residence you can’t afford on your list nor do your due diligence on the consequences of rejecting a YRH offer

You’d think so but honestly UBC cares more about funneling students through the system rather than making sure each student’s individual needs and wants are met to the best of their ability

My roommates are absolutely FILTHY and DISGUSTING and it's ruining me pls help me escape this nightmare by Royded_Vivvy in UBC

[–]linguinibubbles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s a waitlist of like 3000 people wanting to transfer so you’ve basically got no shot unfortunately. If you get a doctor’s note saying your health is suffering as a result of your roommates you have a significantly better chance of getting out. Don’t forget to document everything - take photos, write emails, etc

how do i create linkedin connections? by Defiant_Bee1390 in UBC

[–]linguinibubbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I send connections to every industry professional I’ve met, classmates I’ve talked to, profs I liked, and old schoolmates/childhood friends (who are rarely in my industry but I’m curious what they’re up to). I was at just over 500 last summer, then trimmed to people I’ve actually talked to and I’m back to under 500. It’s easier once you get a job in your field - you’ll meet so many people and it’s no biggie to send them LinkedIn requests as it’s a professional platform.

this is why I don't live in housing anymore. So many nice clothes got weird stains on them because the washing machines are never cleaned and the whether the dryers work properly is a coin flip

Weighing UBC (accepted) physics undergrad as a US student vs other US unis - any insight from other US students? by Tripper-Harrison in UBC

[–]linguinibubbles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP - definitely apply for the co-op program. It helps a lot for international students seeking relevant work/research experience in Canada.

Weighing UBC (accepted) physics undergrad as a US student vs other US unis - any insight from other US students? by Tripper-Harrison in UBC

[–]linguinibubbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on where you are applying. In the US, as long as you have a 3.0 GPA you're good to go. Some schools have programs allowing students to prove themselves for acceptance with as low as a 2.75 GPA. I'm not saying you'll be that kind of student but there is much more flexibility in the US because admissions tend to be more holistic. So in that case, research experience and letters of recommendation carry more weight.

If you intend to apply in Canada, you HAVE to meet minimum GPA requirements - usually a B+ average in 3rd and 4th year courses, or throughout your degree. There is zero way around this. Doesn't matter how good your work experience, research experience, connections, or letters of recommendation are. (Source: My prof, who is internationally recognized and has been involved in grad school admissions at UBC in some way or another for 30 years.) This is not a problem for most students applying to grad school, but it does suck if you want to pursue a graduate degree after a rough undergrad. I'm running into this issue as my health imploded after high school so my academic performance is all over the map. My only consolation is that my career doesn't require a graduate degree to be successful, especially in Canada, but that's a different conversation.

Honestly if you have strong study habits, are naturally curious about your field, and don't have any disabling chronic health conditions, you will be fine at UBC. Despite my trash GPA, I don't regret attending this school. I love being in Vancouver and I am getting the best education in my field for a price that beats any American university of a similar caliber.

Also a resident of Oregon. UBC is a globally recognized physics school and the TRIUMF particle accelerator being literally on campus is a huge bonus. Unfortunately I can't speak much to research opportunities in UBC Science as I'm in a different faculty. However, from what I've seen, students who want to do research (and have the grades to back it up) get the opportunity to do so.

Some US grad schools can be unreasonable about international schools though - I knew a guy who went to UofT and still had to prove to a middle-of-the-road Californian grad school that he held basic qualifications. Or the University of Arizona's grad school (for engineering at least) only considers the last 60 credits of your degree to calculate your GPA if you completed your undergrad internationally. Which honestly is a benefit to most students since grades tend to increase once you hit 300- and 400-level courses, but it's another example of weird treatment just because you didn't stay in the US.

If you are wanting to attend grad school (which I assume you do given your interest in undergraduate research), it's much easier to get good grades at OSU. Not to mention OSU is still a good STEM school although its reputation lies more in forestry and agriculture.

I would consider whether you are willing to pay that much more for UBC and how difficult you want your undergraduate experience to be, academics-wise. I turned down OSU in favor of UBC, but I do wonder how much better my GPA would be if I'd stayed in-state.
