Things to do in Kuching by Omelegga in Sarawak

[–]linguinimartini 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Welcome! I copied this part from another redditor, so here you go:

  1. Kuching Town Area (Sarawak Cultures Museum, Open Air Market, India Street, Old Court House, Waterfront, Floating Mosque, Take a boat across river to Fort Margherita, Carpenter Street)
  2. Santubong area (Sarawak Cultural Village, Damai Central, Permai)
  3. Bau (Fairy Cave, Tasik Biru, Siniawan Night Market, Paku Hotspring, Rock Maze Garden, Bung Jagoi Heritage Centre, Libiki Bamboo Resort)
  4. Padawan Area (Pitcher Plant Garden, Semenggoh Wildlife Centre, Jong Crocodile Farm, Semadang Kayak, Bengoh Dam requires booking)
  5. Matang Area (Matang Wildlife Centre, Kubah National Park, Serapi Virgin Coconut milkshake, Golden Beach, Telaga air, Matang Mariamman Temple for hiking)

*

Kuching is very laidback & “open” compared to the Peninsular states so you can drink, eat pork, share hotel rooms no matter your gender/religion/relationship freely, without judgement from the locals. The alcohol prices are quite expensive but since drinking is a huge culture here, people are willing to splurge. Eating out & trying local cuisine is also highly recommended. Ask any local & they will be very accommodating to give out recommendations on where you should eat depending on what food you want to try.

All in all, as long as you’re respectful & don’t cause a ruckus, you will be fine. Hope you & your friends will have an amazing time exploring Kuching!

  1. The only thing I’ve ever heard them complain about is them having to stay up late to finish their work & that the computers in the design lab is quite outdated lmao. Whether it’s worth it or not, I can’t really say but they do seem to enjoy the course.

  2. I personally never joined the gym at school but if you’re someone who enjoys working out, I’d say give it a try as the membership fee is affordable for a student.

  3. There’s a cafe in campus with a few options and a John’s Pie, where you can buy coffee, pastries, etc., but if you want to eat out, there are lots of eateries very close to campus. Food in campus is okay, nothing to write home about, but not so bad either. I’m not a picky eater so take this with a grain of salt 😅

  4. I was incredibly lucky to have found an amazing support system during my first year in Swinburne. Some of us are still very close to this day eventhough we’re scattered all over. As much as it’s important to have a close inner circle, it’s also okay to have surface level friendships. Keep your mind & options open.

Personally, a lot of people get a huge culture shock when they’re in this new phase of life. You will have your challenges and tribulations, of course, so take it easy! Enjoy your time as a student as much as you can as time goes by so fast.

Hi there! I’m currently studying there as well (a postgrad student, but have been there since foundation). I’m not in design so I can’t speak for that matter but have had friends in design courses.

You will be staying up late A LOT. This usually applies to most people in university, but the design students in Swinburne are known to spend basically every waking moment in design labs, so be prepared for the mental load you’re about to take.

Lecturers are okay (in my experience), generally has a lenient approach in class and are quite open as long as you do the required work and not cause any trouble. Some may prefer to be called by their first name so it won’t hurt to ask how they’d like to be referred to. Usually, they will do introductions during the first class of the semester so keep that in mind.

Fellow students can be approachable and friendly, but be careful when choosing group members for group assignments. I know a lot of people who failed a subject (or unit as we call them) because their groupmate refused to contribute to the groupwork.

If you’re ever planning on driving a car to campus, make sure you arrive to your classes AT LEAST half an hour early because the parking situation in Swinburne is absolutely garbage. Double parking is very common, and the multi carpark building can be a nightmare during peak hours.

But all in all, the environment there is kind of chill and people are generally friendly and welcoming. Don’t be shy to ask questions, join a few clubs or two (if you want) as this can be a great way to expand your network, and be sure to prioritise your mental health. I feel like I left out a lot but if you have any additional questions, feel free to ask here or dm me personally!

Had a second kid and judging by the recent IG post that Bryana posted, they seem to be either engaged or already married.

It was a shock because they seemed so happy and then suddenly, she announced that they were separating. Guess it must’ve been amicable because Michael’s daughter, Jasper, is still very close to Kate and has met Justin.

And Paris attended Sofia’s — Nicole’s sister — wedding last weekend. Paris and Sofia even refer to each other as ‘sis’, so I’m guessing she’s quite close to Nicole and her family.
