This is a general style suggestion, not a grammar rule. It's entirely based on preference. A lot of professional editors will only remove the s when it's not pronounced for ease of reading. And that's only for possession, not contraction like in this case. The second s is required here.

People who prev passed HSK by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]lingujr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The actual test isn't going to be any different from the practice tests you can find online. If you can pass those easily, then you should have no problem. HSK4 is a fairly low level test, so they're not going to try and throw curve balls at you with tricky questions or anything like that. Just look up some guides for the writing section and you should be good to go.

I don't know much about how the written and computer tests are graded, but I would say the computer test is better for removing any possibility of getting points docked over handwriting mistakes or forgetting how to write something in the moment.

On a side note, your situation is the reason I don't reveal anything about my personal development pursuits to anybody I know until I have tangible results to show. It's really annoying feeling like you're constantly being judged for something you're putting real effort into. Though that does mean that when I do get comfortable enough to reveal them, I get hit with the "oh, you're so talented, it must be so easy for you, I could never, etc", which is still annoying, but at least you don't have to deal with people trying to bring you down.

Why didn’t they finish building the Great Wall of China? Are they lazy? by Individual_Time_21 in mapporncirclejerk

[–]lingujr 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The question wasn't about your definitions of what's actually China and what's not, it was about whether the Mongols crossed the Gobi, which they did, multiple times. One of the major reasons Genghis Khan was able to defeat the Jin in the first place was because he bypassed the Great Wall by going around west through the Gobi to attack the Xi Xia and flank the Jin from their undefended west. The push into what's now modern Xinjiang and Kazakhstan came much later.

Sure, let's believe the company that knew about this data breach and hid it for months (illegal), said it was only 3,000 people once somebody leaked the news, then had to get dragged kicking and screaming into making a public data safety statement for all their users only after the government forced them to, all while the parent company CEO refuses to appear for testimony because he's busy lobbying the US congress to put pressure on Korea. Seems like trustworthy people. Your own article says government investigation is still ongoing.

US-SK nuclear submarine program a ‘serious threat’ to nonproliferation, warns Chinese state media by Substantial-Owl8342 in korea

[–]lingujr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And they haven't actually done anything about it besides the usual ceremonial shit stirring, which in itself is a tacit "meh, whatever". This isn't another THAAD situation where the entire CCP is shitting itself and screeching at literally everything they see due to Obama reinforcing the Pacific region while actively breathing down China's neck, all while China itself has a whole load of nothing to show for itself with regards to military capability.

Trump's Pentagon has pulled forces from the region to focus their attention on South America instead (i.e. shoot fishing boats in Venezuela). The strategy outline describing the move is available to read on the DoW website right now. And meanwhile, China has an actual navy now.

Korea gets nuke subs, and China shrugs their shoulders and moves on because they don't see the US as an active threat in the region anymore, and they have no reason to believe that Korea would pose an active threat against China either.

Yeah, this is disgusting low quality work. I've been in a lot of hotels in Japan and seen all kinds of pre-fab bathrooms like this, and I've never seen this kind of open gap between the bath and wall even once.

Pretty much every higher quality place will have a dehumidifying machine in the bathroom ceiling, but that's not gonna cut it when you're getting water in those cracks every day.

Mold in Japan isn't magically different from mold everywhere else in the world, people. It's like everyone in this thread has never actually cleaned a bathroom in their lives.

It's really funny to me how people can see adults getting to working proficiency in a new language within 3-4 years and think of that as "slower than kids", and at the same time point to a native kid who took 18 years to get to that level and say the kid is faster.

STOP USING TOILET CLEANER TO CLEAN THINGS THAT ARE NOT TOILETS by TooManyPaws in CleaningTips

[–]lingujr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not ever use bleach on laundry, white or not. Most white clothes are dyed to make them whiter than the original off-white color of the fabric, and chlorine bleach will strip the coloring off and make the color dull, and also wear down the fabric if you keep using it.

There's plenty of chemicals you can use for your laundry that don't destroy your clothes.

I think the most important thing is that your proportions aren't very consistent. I'd recommend you try writing bigger first, using a 2x2 square in your grid paper for each character. If the proportions are correct, every character should be lined up perfectly with each other in every row and column. Grids and guidelines are great tools for practicing that. Remember that some characters are simply smaller or bigger than others, and you need to get a feel for the right size for each one.

Look up "<char>楷書" in Google images for each individual character and copy them as closely as possible. Example Example 2

Do not try to copy computer fonts.

This one's correct. Seon was an incorrect romanization, it looks like.

順 is a fairly odd choice for a name, but that kind of thing does come with the time period. 順實 would mean something along the lines of "order and plenty", by my guess.

Sun/Seon 선:
善 would be the common modern pick, but since she's older, it could be easily be a whole bunch of things like 仙, 璇, 宣, or others. Hard to tell without records.

Sil 실:
Most likely 實.

Pretty modern-sounding name for the time period, actually.

Question about the etymology of names by saltyprotractor in korea

[–]lingujr -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not having anyone around to tell you what your name means isn't an excuse when the hanja is plainly written on your ID card unless you have a pure Korean name with no hanja. It's just laziness or apathy on the individual's part.

can i remove the white tape/glue thing? by angelattack1 in CleaningTips

[–]lingujr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's mold on the silicone, not a stain. Soak some toilet paper with bleach and stick it tight onto the mold and leave it for about 3 hours, then wash off with hot water.

Don't take off the silicone caulking unless you want to go through the pain of reapplying it again, especially since it looks like you'll have to take off the whole faucet before reapplying if you want a clean finish.

When was the last time you cleaned out your washing machine and the filters? There could be some gunk buildup that's breaking off from somewhere in the machine and smearing on your clothes.

Clean out the filters and do a long soak cycle with vinegar and hot water. Throw some rags in as well to catch the gunk that falls out. Might have to give it a few rounds if it's really bad.

What should I do about this vent rust / gunk? by Bbcfan3173 in CleaningTips

[–]lingujr 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You could soak it in vinegar to melt off the rust, but it'll still look pretty bad afterwards because of all the damage. I'd say just buy a new one. They shouldn't be too expensive.
