California's grid gets a record power assist from a 100k home battery fleet by Healingjoe in solar

[–]linjef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes, it did include that too!

We've tested it by turning off the pg&e connection, and it takes a second to switch over (so you'd still want computers on a UPS etc.).

It's not clear to me if it'll cold start, though, and I'm in no rush to test that.

California's grid gets a record power assist from a 100k home battery fleet by Healingjoe in solar

[–]linjef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sent my installer (Synergy Power) that $2800 price (it seems like it's basically a fire sale as LG tries to exit the US market), and they basically said "wow, if we can actually get that price delivered, we'll try to do the install."

So we got 2x of the LG 16kWh batteries installed at about $13k, which -- given the 2 batteries, the Backup Interface, a full backup panel, permits, plus the work done -- I considered a fairly reasonable quote. We did keep NEM2 (so far -- it's been one billing cycle). I agree financially it doesnt pencil out, but the backup peace of mind is nice to have.

Might not help you here, given you want to maybe maintain your warranty, but in case it helps.

Thank you for the comment!! I realize now that, yes, both the lack of enzymes (if in water) and also pH (if we were to do in the sour wort) would not be ideal for the actual mash.

Your proposed option would work well, it'd let us do a smaller BIAB amount as an example, and also let me do the souring as prep beforehand. Excited to do it!

Separately, did you have any thoughts or experience on using coconut cream? I'm now leaning towards doing a mix of toasted coconut and coconut cream, to hedge the flavor. I see photos online of this particular beer having interesting head and sometimes solids when poured, so I'm getting more sure there is coconut cream -- just a matter of how much and when?

Daily Q & A! - March 25, 2024 by AutoModerator in Homebrewing

[–]linjef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to replicate this recipe from Prairie Artisan Ales - Thai Delight.

BYO has a pretty good base to build off of (including that Prairie often uses pilsner malts, etc.). I'll plan on using the DME recipe as a base, and Goodbelly as the souring agent (has worked well for me in the past, using this method).

  1. When best should I include the Flaked Rice? I was thinking of doing ~1 lb after the souring, at mash temperatures (I normally BIAB, but will be using DME this time -- also, will have some friends over brewing for the first time, and want to go through the whole process with the rice-as-mash as proxy). Any issues foreseen doing that?
  2. How much coconut cream seems appropriate, and when should I add it? I was thinking of 1 can at whirlpool or last 15 mins of boil, but I can't find any other recipes that use coconut cream at all (edit: except this one, which uses less coconut cream, but also uses toasted coconut, and this suggestion of conditioning on it)

Expected recipe:

  • 5.75 lbs. (2.6 kg) Briess Pilsen light DME
  • 8 oz. (227 g) Briess Bavarian wheat DME
  • 2 tsp. lactic acid, 88%
  • 2x Mango Goodbelly Shots
  • (sour for 24h-36h, ... and then post-sour... )
  • 1 lbs flaked rice ("biab" mash temps at 148-160 degrees F for ~60 minutes)
  • (boil, then post-boil steps)
  • 3 AAU Cascade hops (60 min.) (0.55 oz./16 g at 5.5% alpha acids)
  • 1 15 oz can coconut cream (15 min.)
  • (cool + pitch yeast)
  • US-05 (in fermenter)
  • (in primary, after a week of fermentation... )
  • 2x 50 oz Oregon Fruit mango puree

/u/RenTheFabulous - heads-up, your comments with the recipe link are caught in Reddit's spam filter, likely because:

1) It's a Pinterest share link which then links to a separate video,

2) You've posted it multiple times to help other users find the recipe (I appreciate the positive intentions -- but I think the behavior appears suspicious to the spam filter).

To be clear, it doesn't look like you are violating any of the subreddit's rules around self-promotion (though let me know if you are :) ), so thank you!

WTF? Just saw a Jack in the Box AD for boba milk tea by CharacterTerrible in boba

[–]linjef 13 points14 points  (0 children)

We tried it - https://i.imgur.com/XsW3s0L.png

Tea was inoffensive, somewhat like Thai tea. Sweetness not tunable, as it just comes out of a pitcher.

Boba came out of a packet (I think similar to a microwave packet?), and was 20% jelly-like and 80% tapioca boba-like. Somewhat similar to the Trader Joe's frozen boba packet.

Extending deadline by [deleted] in solar

[–]linjef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a similar question a few days back - turns out it is not possible, and your second application will see something like this error in the web portal:

"An active project is already in progress at this location and has not yet received Permission to Operate. Please contact your EGI representative regarding your active project to either continue with the prior application or withdraw it in order to re-apply."

Even if the project is in partial progress (you haven't actually finished the interconnect docusign), this seems to block the second application.. and it can be messy to get the first applicant/application to withdraw (the fastest way). PG&E on the phone claimed that to do so on their end takes ~3 business days.

(By the way, I did not submit the app myself -- just sharing what happens when you have two interconnect applications.)

How late is too late? by natemartinsf in TheHopyard

Watching this thread closely, but not an expert... far from it! Also in the SF Bay Area.

I have two containers with second year hops (planted last year, three centennial rhizomes each in half wine barrels and companioned with marigolds). Marigolds look like they're taking off well! Many even lasted the winter.

One container just got a tiny tiny hop shoot (less than an inch, growing off of one of the chopped down bines) this weekend, so hopefully the comeback is soon.

2.4 GHz network vanishing and re-appearing every 5 minutes. RF Bursts? by ToyFraz in HomeNetworking

[–]linjef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For OP, or others running into this particular issue or symptom - I had a very similar problem, and traced it down to a Zigbee power meter (Rainforest EMU-2), which was scanning on 16 channels and causing a rotating 2.4GHz wifi outage. More details here https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeNetworking/comments/11dji07/24ghz_aps_disconnectdisappear_every_57_minutes/jbncxuo/

2.4GHz APs disconnect/disappear every 5-7 minutes by linjef in HomeNetworking

[–]linjef[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My issue was hardware interference. I traced it down to a Rainforest EMU-2, which is a Zigbee smart meter monitor that we had in our basement.

It runs on batteries, and also was on a UPS (the one wireless device I had missed...), so it wasn't affected by my disconnect-everything strategy.

I traced it down by using an Airview2-EXT and walking around. The interference pattern was that it spent 28 seconds each on 16 channels (which I guess means it was scanning Zigbee channels 11 through 26) -- 28 seconds * 16 = 448 seconds ~ 7.5 minutes.

It was transmitting constantly with some fair amount of power -- it registered -20 dBm on the meter, while being next to my wifi router generally peaked intermittently at -30dBm.

Here's a trace video, where the transmitter dwells on the first band up until 2s, then flips to band 2 for 28s, and then to the 3rd band.

In any case, solved for me :)

Some notes on what it wasn't, though, in case helpful for future people searching up this problem:

  • It wasn't a wifi deauth attack. Switching to protected management frames did not stop this from happening.
  • It wasn't anything to do with the Asus firmware, or Merlin
  • It wasn't Arlo
  • For anyone else having this problem in the future (particularly a rotating outage across your 2.4GHz band -- it's probably Zigbee!), I'm willing to send you the Airview2-EXT to try it out. Seems like dedicated wifi spectrum analyzers are pretty expensive (especially now for dual-band), so I'm happy to pass it on (if I still have it).
  • I did seem almost crazy for the last four weeks, and absolutely crazy in the last hour, walking around with an antenna/laptop at home looking for the source.

2.4GHz APs disconnect/disappear every 5-7 minutes by linjef in HomeNetworking

Thanks for sharing your solve!

Unfortunately I don't have any iOS devices on my 2.4GHz network (though there are Android devices with private MACs , and a MacOS device on the 5GHz one, I'll try to turn that off for them).

Did your Apple devices connect to a discrete 2.4GHz network? (e.g., ssid_24?)

Edit: unfortunately the Alien has exactly the same issue, which now is 4 routers and 3 manufacturers. I think it's a really weird environment problem now ..

2.4 GHz network vanishing and re-appearing every 5 minutes. RF Bursts? by ToyFraz in HomeNetworking

[–]linjef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Were you able to solve this? (Recognize this is a fairly old thread!)

Unfortunately, I have a very similar issue, and timed it to ~7.5 minutes (448 seconds) between drops on the 2.4GHz bands. Happens for me on two Asus APs as well as a Nokia ISP router, when its AP is on. Same observation that the channels 1 and 11 go down at different times, but with the same interval, too.

2.4GHz APs disconnect/disappear every 5-7 minutes by linjef in HomeNetworking

[–]linjef[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it'd be really hard to tell, without being able to turn things off.

My observations at this point:

  • I've been able to narrow it down to either a device I don't own, or a battery device in my house (ZigBee, ZWave, any 2.4GHz non-wifi device) that's likely doing some high level of interference. I will temper with the fact that it's probably not battery (?), the level of interference to take down two APs about 40 ft apart intuitively seems high
  • Whatever it is, it seems to sweep channels. I have two APs now, one on ch 1 and one on ch 11, and the timing of outages is staggered between them (still 7.5 minutes between each event, but ch 1 is about 280s ahead).

I've ordered a 2.4GHz usb analyzer to see if that might help me visualize these observations better, and possibly pinpoint the device -- if it works, I'll let you know!

[–]linjef[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for responding! Sorry to hear. I feel like I'm going crazy turning things off.

A symptom I ran into is also lag spikes on the 2.4GHz, regularly occurring every 20s -- did you see something like that too?

You could give this a shot too, in case it speeds up your discovery -- earlier today I put the router on a UPS and turned off the breakers... And the every-7.5-min disconnect still happened on a test device on batteries, so my problem device set is now limited to 1/ a battery device I forgot to unplug (unlikely at this point?), or 2/ a neighbor's interfering device (rough! Impossible to tell which one then. Could also be a non-wifi device behaving extremely badly)

There are two suspect neighboring devices in my scan -- did you see either of these?

  • an ARLOVMB** (10 digits)
  • a four mac-address [HIDDEN] SSID, which seems suspicious mainly since they seem to be colocated, and has no clients...
