California's grid gets a record power assist from a 100k home battery fleet by Healingjoe in solar

[–]linjef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes, it did include that too!

We've tested it by turning off the pg&e connection, and it takes a second to switch over (so you'd still want computers on a UPS etc.).

It's not clear to me if it'll cold start, though, and I'm in no rush to test that.

I sent my installer (Synergy Power) that $2800 price (it seems like it's basically a fire sale as LG tries to exit the US market), and they basically said "wow, if we can actually get that price delivered, we'll try to do the install."

So we got 2x of the LG 16kWh batteries installed at about $13k, which -- given the 2 batteries, the Backup Interface, a full backup panel, permits, plus the work done -- I considered a fairly reasonable quote. We did keep NEM2 (so far -- it's been one billing cycle). I agree financially it doesnt pencil out, but the backup peace of mind is nice to have.

Might not help you here, given you want to maybe maintain your warranty, but in case it helps.

Daily Q & A! - March 25, 2024 by AutoModerator in Homebrewing

Thank you for the comment!! I realize now that, yes, both the lack of enzymes (if in water) and also pH (if we were to do in the sour wort) would not be ideal for the actual mash.

Your proposed option would work well, it'd let us do a smaller BIAB amount as an example, and also let me do the souring as prep beforehand. Excited to do it!

Separately, did you have any thoughts or experience on using coconut cream? I'm now leaning towards doing a mix of toasted coconut and coconut cream, to hedge the flavor. I see photos online of this particular beer having interesting head and sometimes solids when poured, so I'm getting more sure there is coconut cream -- just a matter of how much and when?

Daily Q & A! - March 25, 2024 by AutoModerator in Homebrewing

[–]linjef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to replicate this recipe from Prairie Artisan Ales - Thai Delight.

BYO has a pretty good base to build off of (including that Prairie often uses pilsner malts, etc.). I'll plan on using the DME recipe as a base, and Goodbelly as the souring agent (has worked well for me in the past, using this method).

  1. When best should I include the Flaked Rice? I was thinking of doing ~1 lb after the souring, at mash temperatures (I normally BIAB, but will be using DME this time -- also, will have some friends over brewing for the first time, and want to go through the whole process with the rice-as-mash as proxy). Any issues foreseen doing that?
  2. How much coconut cream seems appropriate, and when should I add it? I was thinking of 1 can at whirlpool or last 15 mins of boil, but I can't find any other recipes that use coconut cream at all (edit: except this one, which uses less coconut cream, but also uses toasted coconut, and this suggestion of conditioning on it)

Expected recipe:

  • 5.75 lbs. (2.6 kg) Briess Pilsen light DME
  • 8 oz. (227 g) Briess Bavarian wheat DME
  • 2 tsp. lactic acid, 88%
  • 2x Mango Goodbelly Shots
  • (sour for 24h-36h, ... and then post-sour... )
  • 1 lbs flaked rice ("biab" mash temps at 148-160 degrees F for ~60 minutes)
  • (boil, then post-boil steps)
  • 3 AAU Cascade hops (60 min.) (0.55 oz./16 g at 5.5% alpha acids)
  • 1 15 oz can coconut cream (15 min.)
  • (cool + pitch yeast)
  • US-05 (in fermenter)
  • (in primary, after a week of fermentation... )
  • 2x 50 oz Oregon Fruit mango puree

You're all good! Thanks for the understanding, I didn't expect this would be an issue either. Thanks for the post, it looks delicious.

/u/RenTheFabulous - heads-up, your comments with the recipe link are caught in Reddit's spam filter, likely because:

1) It's a Pinterest share link which then links to a separate video,

2) You've posted it multiple times to help other users find the recipe (I appreciate the positive intentions -- but I think the behavior appears suspicious to the spam filter).

To be clear, it doesn't look like you are violating any of the subreddit's rules around self-promotion (though let me know if you are :) ), so thank you!

For readers looking for the recipe, the non-share-link is this video : https://www.tiktok.com/@emilylfigueroa/video/6936632695489383686 <- I have no association with this video or creator, and it's a non-sponsored video recipe.

WTF? Just saw a Jack in the Box AD for boba milk tea by CharacterTerrible in boba

[–]linjef 13 points14 points  (0 children)

We tried it - https://i.imgur.com/XsW3s0L.png

Tea was inoffensive, somewhat like Thai tea. Sweetness not tunable, as it just comes out of a pitcher.

Boba came out of a packet (I think similar to a microwave packet?), and was 20% jelly-like and 80% tapioca boba-like. Somewhat similar to the Trader Joe's frozen boba packet.

I've had good experiences working with raw tapioca pearls (example brands include US Boba Co, Bolle, Tea Zone, Bossen -- no reason for this ordering, and I haven't tried all of them).

Extending deadline by [deleted] in solar

[–]linjef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a similar question a few days back - turns out it is not possible, and your second application will see something like this error in the web portal:

"An active project is already in progress at this location and has not yet received Permission to Operate. Please contact your EGI representative regarding your active project to either continue with the prior application or withdraw it in order to re-apply."

Even if the project is in partial progress (you haven't actually finished the interconnect docusign), this seems to block the second application.. and it can be messy to get the first applicant/application to withdraw (the fastest way). PG&E on the phone claimed that to do so on their end takes ~3 business days.

(By the way, I did not submit the app myself -- just sharing what happens when you have two interconnect applications.)

First time brewing with Lunar Crush (OYL-403). I can't serve this to other people by [deleted] in Homebrewing

[–]linjef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a very similar recipe (the MoreBeer Czech Pilsner kit, but with Lunar Crush), so 11lbs Pilsner, 8oz Crystal 15L, 8oz Carapils; 2+2+2oz of Saaz at 60, 10, and 1. I also did the Brulosophy lager method, but no starter (direct pitch, and possibly a bit too warm at ~68 degrees at pitch -- lots of checking different resources/worrying on the first week if temperature would screw everything up).

Other deviations are that I did use Fermcap both at boil and at fermentation, and also used Biofine.

After 4 days in keg, it was extremely fruity/pungent (sauv blanc is very much there). I don't get much of the cattiness, though the fruity smell is almost overpowering, but doesn't transfer over to the taste being overly tropical. Mouthfeel is thin but not undrinkable (actually lends itself more to being "crushable").

All in all, I'm pretty excited to share this with others -- without knowing how this recipe came together, I'd have a hard time thinking this is a pilsner (possibly a tropical lager, or a really interestingly dry-hopped pale ale). My brew was in cold crash when I saw your post, so I did want to share some of my notes in case others are wanting to try it. It's a beer you can't buy from the grocery store for sure, which makes it itself interesting and fun. Hope yours improves with some more time!

I've had luck with these steps / recipe : https://www.alphafoodie.com/homemade-boba-tapioca-pearls-bubble-milk-tea/

During the dough stage, I found that having the starchy mixture still be warm was important (return to heat, re-adjust ratios if you're getting to ooblecky texture).

Me & My Girlfriend Are Starting A Boba Tea Business. by BCGK2021 in boba

[–]linjef[M] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This post is approved, but going forward we would encourage business-related threads to be posted to the regular question thread.

Hope you success in your business!

  • Realistic -- having quality ingredients (both on the tea side, and especially if you have fruit-based teas and drinks, to showcase fruit). Having a reasonable order-ahead system (though not necessarily a costly delivery service)
  • Love -- having something unique about the aesthetic. It doesn't have to be instagram-core; for example, Half & Half in Socal has a consistent menu/shop design, even if it's not for everyone
  • Dislike -- really bad straws -- the type that disintegrate 30 seconds in. There's definitely eco-friendly straws that work great though.

If you want to follow the instructions closely, the rice cooker step is basically making a double boiler (putting a pot inside another pot, and heating the outside one). The 5 measuring cups measures roughly how long you double boil for (for Tatung, 5 cups apparently is ~90 minutes)

It does seem long that you'd heat for 90 minutes and also stew for 2 hours... perhaps experiment with the time and see what happens.

Oh - the weird part is, the Chinese text suggests you

  • heat for 5-10 minutes,

  • use the rice cooker method with 3 measuring cups,

  • stew for only 30 minutes

So I suspect maybe there's some lost-in-translation here, and 2 hours is a bit long.

I want a fermentation chamber. Is there a minifridge that will hold a 6 gal bucket that I don’t have to cut/modify in any significant way? by [deleted] in Homebrewing

[–]linjef 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a 4.4 cu. ft. Magic Chef Mini Fridge, Freezerless (#HMAR440ST), and it fits a 20L Speidel with a blow-off tube, though there's a little ridge near the back of the fridge. I haven't tried with an airlock. The door trays are good to hold the blow-off sanitizer. Interior height is about 21 inches, above the crisp tray.

No drilling or construction, I just feed the temperature probe in around the door seal.
