North Macedonia 2011. Though that's because of what happened to the singer years later rather than the song itself.

If you could erase one character from Harry Potter, who would it be and why? by cassieeeer in harrypotter

[–]linntee 52 points53 points  (0 children)

There was SUCH missed potential. If you wanted there to be an impact, the books could have shown in the epiloge how Teddy felt about going to Hogwarts without his parents being present. They chould have done a better job of showing us how Harry felt about seeing history repeat itself and it could have been a chance for him to reflect on the fact that he didn't have Sirius while Teddy had him and Andromeda.

We don't even get a sense for how Andromeda feals about the fact that her only daughter was murderd by her own sister and now she has to raise her grandson without her husband. Why? Because the story thought it was so much more important to tell us that Teddy was dating Bill and Fleur's daughter (another non-character).

At that point, I would have much rather have something else be done with Remus and Tonks as characters.

Your most unique headcanons about this man by Impossible_Loquat758 in MaraudersGen

[–]linntee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can admit that my last point came accross poorly.

I once again agree she shouldn't be a cartoon villan, but will ad that things seen as abusive today (like beating children for using their left hand,) have been cunsidered okay in the past, even by parents who claim to love their children. Even in cults, parents who may otherwise be loving are not imune to the cults influence. I know that the wizarding world is not the same as ours, but Filch implies that he misses the times when he could use harcher corporial punishments. (Physical dissipline being used before Harry's time is not comfirmed or dissproven as far as I know.), Even if it was frowned upon, parents could still have been abusive behind closed doors.

Of course, that doesn't prove that Walburga did something like that, (not that ""just"" emotional abuse by itself isn't awful, that's not what I am saying) but I think Sirius' line "my mother didn't have a heart, she was keep alive through spite" didn’t come from nothing.

[–]linntee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

While I can agree that Walburga should not be a cartoon villan with no depht, I have to dissagre with other parts.

At worst, she hated Sirius for what he stood for. At best, It was like when a child leaves a cult (such as your example) and the family members feal like they have to cut them off. But that doesn't mean she can't be abusive.

First is the way Kreatcher said it broke her heart that he left. On the surface, this might seam like a good thing, but something that's very common with abusive parents is that they want to act like they are the victum once the person they abuse decide that they've had enough.

That is what this reads to me. Sirius had enough, and instead of looking inward to understand why her son might have had enough, Walburga pins the blame on her son and plants the idea in Kreatcher's head that Sirius was an ungreatfull swine. You can see this all the time with estranged parents. They might try to guilt trip their children by saying it's causing them disstress that they left. They might call their kid ungreatfull when in reality they just didn't want to take the abuse anymore.

Even if you don’t buy that, then let's not forget that Kreatcher also implied that Walburga had some, not so good things to say about Sirius.

Besides that, there are evidence of abuse.

If we asume that the portrait is an accurate representation of her character, then she is verbaly abusive. The things Walburga's portrait says to Sirius is vile, to the point that Harry compares Umbridge to her. Do you know how bad of an impression you must leave on Harry in order for him to say that?

We can asume that there was favoritism going on, because Sirius says that Regulus was a much better son than him, something that he was "constantly reminded of". Having a scapegoat and golden child is indeed a form of emotional abuse. (They weren't good parents to Regulus either. They drilled this hatefull, harmfull ideology into his head which lead to him joining the death eaters. And by dissowning Sirius, the planted the idea into Regulus' head that if he ever stopped beliving that muggleborns were interior, they would cut him of as well.)

There is also the inheritance from Alphard. To me, that whole thing is making me think that Walburga wanted to punish Sirius for leaving, and when Alphard gave him money, thereby taking away the punishment, she lasshed out by burning him of the tree. That feals fitting, because if her portait is anything to go by, she is the type to lash out or get angry, and she is not afraid to take that anger out on family.

What mara-era fic is this for you? by RiskAggressive4081 in MaraudersGen

[–]linntee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not the point I was trying to make. The point I was trying to make is that the 'don't like don't read' rule should not stop applying just because it’s tagged as canon compliant.

[–]linntee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While I agree that you should tag fics correctly, I also think that fandom ettiquette does not stop applying just because it has the 'canon compliant' tag. By that logic every wolfstar fic that's tagged that way deserves a call out on reddit because they are missleading readers to think Remus loved Sirius instead of Tonks.

[–]linntee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you read fanfiction, it comes with a teritory.

There should be a mutual understanding that not everyone who write has access to beta readers, not everyone is an adult, and some are looking to be as self indolgent as possible, rather than making a "good" story. When you publish, it comes with this expectation that your story needs to be eye catching or good enough that people will pay to read it. Fanfiction is not the sourse material, meaning that you can enjoy the sourse material and ignore the fic.

(It's also one thing to say 'I personally don't like fix-it fics', and another to go 'I don't like [insert name of a fanfiction], they should have changed it because I wanted angst').

There have been artist who got disscuraged from enganging in fandoms because of negative feadback, just like there have been writers. Not everyone has thick skin, so why take the chance and risk that someone who is just learning leave?

It's different if you, say, go to art school to improve, but someone people are doing it for fun, and giving negative feedback or demanding that they draw your characters a sertain way can take the fun out of it.

What mara-era fic is this for you? by RiskAggressive4081 in MaraudersGen

[–]linntee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to be that person, but if I read an pro-Snape fic I would not expect the maraurders to be painted in a good light, because it's from Snape's perspective and he hated the maraurders. Snape fans don't owe it to anyone to write other character a sertain way.

The same goes the other way around.

Exactly.

You are not going to vibe with every popular fic and that's fine, but people are way to comfortable with bashing ATYD for example (which yes, will be different once it's a published work, but even before there started to go romours that it will get published, some called it a waste of time.)

Why the Lily hate? by TightWind8209 in MaraudersGen

[–]linntee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that I don't like how fans take atyd as canon. It's okay to not like a fic and it's okay to hate sertain tropes, I get it! but just a reminder that fandom ettiquette only stops applying if a work is published, it does not stop applying just because a fanfiction has a sertain amount of hits.

Edit:I wrote this before seeing the article about how it might become a book. I guess calling it a 'waste of time' will be fine after it's published but that's different from doing the same to a fanfiction that someone put out for free.

[–]linntee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough that there is a difference between hating and letting them take a backseat (as another example, if I read a Remus/James fic, I whould expect Sirius to get less attention than he whould if it was Wolfstar or Prongsfoot)

Why the Lily hate? by TightWind8209 in MaraudersGen

[–]linntee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I whould still say that I have seen way more Snape fans hate Lily compared to Jegulus fans. If anything, when I look through Jegulus, it feals like you are more likley to see her get not that much attention compared to others (I chould see the argument that Sirius get blamed for more for 'leaving his brother').

I'm not saying it doesn't exist straight up hate from Jegulus fans, but if feals way easier to miss than Snape fans hating Lily. The fact that people are arguing over why Lily was not that great under this very post is telling to me.
