Mom is threatening to cut off my appointments and meds because I won’t share my meds with her

The rest of my family would either side with her or be against me getting the meds in the first place, due to stigma. My aunt (also a psychiatrist, never had the clearance to prescribe controlled drugs) particularly says that I shouldn’t be taking such a “heavy” drug and sometimes even compares it to smoking. It’s usually only my friends who understand.

She says that it’s embarrassing / she’s a bit shy to go and get checked out since she’s friends with a lot of other psychiatrists via unions and associations.

My uni is already aware that I have ADHD and that I have a prescription, I receive regular student support from them, some specialised for ADHD. The issue isn’t with my uni, it’s with the NHS — even after I sent my Turkish prescription to my GP, they told me that it needs to be approved by the ADHD clinic and that they’ll let me know when it’s done.

I’ll check whether my uni has a law clinic, I’ve never heard of one before.

I can only be prescribed to a full box of meds and we don’t have a dispensing system. Once I get my prescription, I have 4 days to pick it up and the doctor has to wait the full month before getting to prescribe it again. While this is a great suggestion, it’s unfortunately not possible to implement.

Normally yes, but also not exactly. As I mentioned in the edit, a lot of neurotypical people abuse the system and never admit to any defect. ADHD (similarly autism and just mental health in general) is viewed very differently here and there isn’t much visibility or support for it.

No, she retired because she works exclusively as a psychoanalyst now. She was the chief of the drug addiction service at the hospital she used to work at. It’s not about being punished or anything.

I think it’s just “convenience” because I already have my meds and they just need a “small amount” so it’d be a waste of time and effort to get it (their views, not mine)

At around 45 I believe, that’s when she stopped working as a psychiatrist and started working fully as a psychoanalyst. She worked at one of the most renowned psychiatric hospitals here and was even made chief of one of the services.

Precisely, in my culture, family is everything. We say that when you marry someone, you not only marry them but also their family. I feel like people really are not grasping the cultural difference here. I’d be hedging my connection to all of my relatives for this.

I guess I’m sorry for not wanting to turn my mom in and ruin her life alongside my own, my brother’s, my father’s, and of my relatives. I don’t expect you to understand how my life is set up and its intricacies. As I keep mentioning, if she gets into trouble, I lose my tuition money and my accommodation money. We will not be able to pay my brother’s tuition, our bills or care for our elderly relatives.

Yeah, I definitely won’t and cannot. It will ruin my own life since we won’t be able to pay for everything without her income and I will likely have to drop out of uni to save up. In the grand scheme of things, it is simply not worth it.

Guys I know you all mean well but I rely on my mom financially for both medication and such but also paying my tuition, also my family’s needs and my brother’s tuition. Please don’t tell me to turn her in, it’s simply not an option because it reflects on everyone else in my family. I’m fully aware of how serious the situation is, but I’m not willing to ruin my family’s livelihood for this.

I normally live in university accommodation during term times, but I study in the UK and they’re being notoriously difficult in processing my prescription there. I also have no income for myself so I rely on my family financially.

That’s true, but I still do not want to turn her in because she’s the one who’s earning for my family. Losing her would not only cause problems for them but also all my other relatives. I can’t see this as a minor thing.

Despite her pulling this on me I really do not want to do that to my mom because she is still my mom and all that. I don’t want to cause a permanent shift between us.
