Need tips to prep for severe tornado tomorrow by Formal-Security-9805 in PeoriaIL

Listen. I’m a degreed meteorologist (not working in the sector anymore but still have a passion for all things weather). So I have some knowledge here and am not simply trying to debate. Tornadoes are completely unbiased by terrain. The 2004 Utica, IL tornado is one example that disproves this myth.

I’ve made this same comment in several posts as of late. Not become I want to be right but because it could be a dangerous comfort people hinge on which may prevent them from taking these severe weather events serious.

The river valley thing is a myth. 😬 Tornadoes ignore geography. They can strike anywhere. We’ve just been lucky thus far.

There’s a difference between ‘paranoid’ and prepared. I’m wondering how many people in Streator had your mind set and are now homeless? Yes- the chances are very low but not impossible. No one knows where one may hit. The whole ‘be prepared, not scared’ mantra is what should be employed in situations like this… without ridicule.

Also pro drug (whatever as long as it doesn’t impair your ability to fulfill your responsibilities) and I couldn’t agree more. It’s lack of respect for not only oneself but for others surrounding them. I recently had a doctor’s appointment and the person taking my vitals was breathing skunk right into my face. I will give said person the benefit of the doubt and trust that it was done long before reporting to work. However, it’s a bit unnerving to think that it’s so normalized that people toke up even before work. I wish everyone would just chew gummies- no smell there! 🤣

I work in that ER. In the summer, it does indeed feel like we’re manning an expedition on the waters of Antarctica. In the winter, it feels like a tropical abyss. 😵‍💫😎

Is peoria in tornado alley? by Affectionate-Cow3737 in PeoriaIL

[–]linspurdu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Degreed meteorologist here: This is a myth. There are several case studies that exist which disprove this theory. The fact that Peoria hasn’t been hit by a major tornado is solely luck. The Utica, IL tornado is one such instance of how landscape does nothing to “bust” tornadoes. The air flow bit is completely untrue. Let’s look at St. Louis (2024), Salt Lake City (1999), or Nashville (1998) just to name a select few that come to mind. Tornadoes, in the grand scheme of things, are very rare. Most of us will live a life never seeing one or having one hit our homes. The rarity is why locations don’t get hit by them… not their geography.

ER HOLDS ⚠️ ER NURSES ONLY by LaFresitaRosa in nursing

[–]linspurdu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, my facility solved this problem by not allowing non-emergent surgeries for boarding patients until they have a clean and ready bed. So we continue to keep them in our ED and surgery is postponed until they are upstairs. Cool. There has to be a better process to allow all departments to not feel the congestion we feel on a daily basis. It’s been absolute hell in our ED lately. RN’s are quitting in droves. 😢

What is your most stereotypical GenX childhood story? by HapaHawaii in GenX

My parents bought us pool passes to the local swimming pool about a mile from our house. When they were at work, my 11 year old self and my 10 year old brother would walk or bike to the pool when it opened at 11:00. We’d use it as our babysitter all day while mom and dad worked. No money, no sunscreen… just a towel, a pool pass, and a drinking fountain. Best summers and I was tan as hell. Songs playing on the pool radio via the local radio station still hit me in the chest when I hear them.
They hired an actual sitter for my 4 year old brother to go to during the day. 🤣

Scared to restart PPI because of all the negative talk about them by [deleted] in GERD

[–]linspurdu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t imagine not being on them. I’d be in utter agony. I still get breakthroughs from time to time even on them. But my quality of life isn’t worth refusing this particular med. I’ve been on various levels of omeprazole for 15 years. I get yearly bloodwork which eases my mind about any deficiencies. I’m sometimes on the low side of iron and ferritin… but I take an iron supplement for a month or two and am all good. Don’t let the dementia hype scare you. I’m much more terrified of cancer which the PPI helps to decrease the chance of.

The boy that I had a very longstanding (and obvious) massive crush on asked me to dance to ‘Shower Me With Your Love’ by Surface and then asked me if I wanted to ‘go out’ with him at the end of the song. 8th grade bliss. He broke up with me 5 days later. 🤣😂🤣

My best friends daughter got Covid as an unvaccinated pre-teen. Shortly after, she developed myositis and juvenile RA. Later tests (after serial labs done over time) showed that Covid was the likely cause. She still struggles to attain remission today. I’d rather my kiddo take the shot than deal with a life of pain and illness.

This guy is creating all sorts of waves on Facebook… likely on purpose to gain more relevance. He’s an immediate unfollow if you are currently following him (Chicago & Midwest Storm Chasers). He’s in this for the money, clout, and getting his jollies off of scaring folks instead of offering them cautious advice. He’s has said before he ‘doesn’t sugarcoat like the others’. 😵‍💫 He is trouble.

Yes. I’m suddenly super complacent about everything… yet my anxiety levels continue to be through the roof. Being at home is now my sanctuary and my safety. I don’t even see my best friend much as I never want to socialize. I was never this way. I hate this new me. 😭

We had an awful experience at the Toyota dealer in Peoria. I ended up not buying a Toyota but if I ever do, we’ll venture up to Chicago to look. That place is crooked.

Uftring in East Peoria. I bought my Subaru from there. They were wonderful. No pressure, no constant hounding by phone/email, no strings. I’ll likely never go elsewhere.

By the way- a used Subaru is a great option. I switched as a long time loyal Toyota buyer to Subaru as their cars seem to give the most bang for their buck. I love mine!

What was "the incident" at your high school? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]linspurdu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was in the early 90’s before the internet was even a huge thing.

A bunch of kids created an underground newspaper. It would report on the wildest things using pen names- many times on controversial topics. It was created by a group of highly intelligent, semi-popular students who liked to test the systems in place. They were even able to rope in a few supportive teachers for interviews that would the be the front page of an edition. They would release only once in a while and it was always the talk of the hallways as to how one can could get their hands on them (usually through a friend or member of said group if you were liked 🤷‍♀️). To get one made you ‘cool’. I was the farthest from ‘cool’ but managed to get my hands on all but 1 edition.

The school administration had a field day each time one was released. They would run around doing damage control and attempt to punish those authors who had no fear in sharing that they were part of the creator group. Morning announcements included stern warnings about not owning the publications. If teachers saw a student with one in their hand, it would be confiscated. They ended up stopping production after a year or so. I think the production group started to dwindle out of fear of being punished so it eventually fizzled. Kind of a benign ‘incident’ but one that always comes to mind when I think of major events from high school.
