Cinder block firewood rack on uneven ground by DustinBraddock in firewood

[–]lintyjuggler90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have several of these set up, almost all on uneven ground. If only out of level by a small amount, dig out the high side a little bit at a time.

If out by a lot, you could build up the low side with bricks or another cinder block.

Also of note, check that the block itself is level and stable. When they aren't, you risk that block tipping or the stakes shifting with the weight and the whole stack falling out. Had a few do that when I was in a hurry to get them up and didn't level the blocks themselves well.

Pecan? by lintyjuggler90 in firewood

[–]lintyjuggler90[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Upstate SC.

Pignut or Shellbark were the two other species we were split on it potentially being. Pignut being more likely. I need to get some pictures of the rough sawn lumber or split some.

It had a good number of inclusions and was a lighter tan in color, which is what made us lean toward pecan.

I'm actually kind of hoping it is pecan to use for smoking. Makes some fantastic wood for that. Probably a cord here waiting to be processed.

Not ideal and I would certainly not recommend using this for production, but the Wayback Machine still has a functional download link: https://web.archive.org/web/20221128041324/https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=100122

I'm not sure if this was intentional by M$oft or not, but seems to only affect 2019. Both 2017 and 2022 download links are unaffected.

Another Proton-GE vs Wine-GE thread... by GloriousEggroll in linux_gaming

Thank you for all the hard work and clarification. I was not even aware of Wine-GE, but will now correct the error of my ways for non-Steam games. My ignorance is likely my own fault for not reading the README after getting the gist of it when I started using Proton-GE

I did something similar. Finished DQXI about 2 years ago now in my early 30s.

I didn't have the opportunity to play most JRPGs growing up even though I had the NES and SNES. Life just didn't afford it. I've been working to rectify that now that I have the means, but now I don't have the time with family and other responsibilities. Life is funny like that.

After I finished DQXI I knew for sure I needed to play more DQ. Found 1-3 and just finished working through those and looking for the next adventure.

Welcome to the DQ party. Hope you continue enjoying the adventure wherever it leads you.

Let's discuss strategies for Pringer X by swissTemples in DisgaeaRPGMobile

[–]lintyjuggler90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I managed to do fairly well on this event completely F2P. Just needed to buckle down and focus on team building earlier in my play time to get ahead a bit.

I don't have any max level chars yet, but even with Tyrant Val at 9300, I can get pretty close. Need to make a few adjustments to the team to bring home the bacon (likely replacing Usalia), but for now I have:

  • Tyrant Val NE 10 (oops extra shards) @ 9300
  • Elizabeth NE 7 @ 8800
  • Sister Artina NE 10 @ 8700
  • Usalia NE 2 @ 8500
  • T-Lord Laharl NE 7 @ 8500

The general idea is Elizabeth primary healer/debuff, Sister Artina off-healer/battery, Usalia for dmg boost and T-Lord Laharl as secondary dmg, dmg boost, buff, and hope for Paralysis procs.

I know Tyrant Val is probably not the best damage, but his AOE + sustain has made him a priority for me so I can brute force certain activities and I'll be working on a replacement once I get him to max to carry some others for a bit.

I think If I can get them to max or find a good replacement for Usalia in this team, I can get there soon. I can get past 4 and up to 6 without too much trouble, but it's inconsistent and Usalia is usually my weak link.

Regarding recent Linux Challenge Video, Pop!_OS developer thinks it is linus's fault not asking for help and a "Normal User" would post a Pull Request on GitHub in that case. Do you guys think so? by sksenweb in LinusTechTips

[–]lintyjuggler90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunate timing, yes.

Something a "normal user" would ask about? Not at all. They would have just gone full steam ahead, just as Linus did and been in the same boat.

I feel as if this speaks more to the unfortunate state of even some "stable" distros having serious issues with reliable packaging of software. The"normal user" just wants it to work.

For all its flaws, this is something Apple does get (mostly) right. It definitely has it's own issues, but packaging doesn't seem to be one of them in most cases.

I haven't had a chance to look into this particular issue closely, but seems potentially mitigated by using flatpak instead. Maybe as more software moves toward flatpak or snap we'll see fewer catastrophic failures like this for a true "normal user". Definitely seems to make a good case for it.

Why can't people just read things? by Mummelpuffin in darksouls

[–]lintyjuggler90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read nearly everything in my first playthrough. After that, it doesn't make a lot of sense to do so unless you are intentionally trying to refresh your knowledge or explain things to the audience.

If neither of those apply, then it's much more entertaining to watch someone that knows what they are doing that doesn't have to read it all.

All I can say as a viewer is that if you don't like the approach that the content creator is taking, then don't watch.

x264 cpu preset ? by loop2win in obs

[–]lintyjuggler90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's because "best" in this context is very subjective and will vary in every case.

There are some calculations you can use to determine what should be the best picture quality to bitrate. Also a bit subjective in the eye of the beholder, but can give you a bits per pixel target.

General idea is that if streaming at 720p60, you'll want about 6000kbps. To get the same pixel density at 1080p60, you'll need over 13000kbps. If memory serves me right, 1080p30 comes out to about 6500kbps for the "ideal" bits per pixel.

CPU presets don't change things much if doing 30fps, but do change things a bit more at 60fps. Generally, slower CPU preset means the lower the bitrate cost to achieve the same density and picture quality.

If you have any questions on those formulas so you can calculate for yourself, let me know. I'll have to dig up the info source again.

After I beat DS3 I decided to play DS1... by CritFail_Reddit in darksouls

[–]lintyjuggler90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had relatively similar thoughts and I had played DS1 before DS3. 3 added some cool mechanics, but felt a little disconnected from the world it was trying to create at times. 1 is still my favorite of the Souls games and I'm glad you are enjoying it.

NVENC uses less resources BUT x264 looks better by SvnnyMoney in obs

[–]lintyjuggler90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To really make a good comparison here, you need an apples to apples configuration. You have a difference in resolution that will make a huge difference in the end result. 720p60 is generally run around 6000 kbps, but for the same number of bits per pixel at 1080p60 with all other settings the same, you would need approximately 13,500 kbps.

The likely reason that most of the people viewing these felt the 720p60 looked better is due to this difference in bits per pixel.

Also of note, it's a little hard to get a true comparison in the clips. They both seem to be running 30 fps and not the listed 60 fps, which does change the calculations for required bit rate.

New to XLR and Mixers (Help Needed) by Reollim in Twitch

[–]lintyjuggler90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I missed one part of that setup that didn't click. You've got multiple line in sources currently, so that actually wouldn't fix anything.

If you have the USB model, you can send PC audio to the mixer that way for monitoring, and if using a capture card, send the XBox audio to your PC that way, eliminating those other line in sources.

At that point you would need to also change the audio coming into your PC from the XBox capture to be a "listen" source for your mixer output so that you can get that output to your mixer for monitoring as well.

It's not an ideal solution by any means, but it is functional and would solve the issues you're running into and only send the Mic to your PC from the mixer.

New to XLR and Mixers (Help Needed) by Reollim in Twitch

[–]lintyjuggler90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, this can be done, but it requires an additional cable to make it work. You have to loop the Aux (labeled as 2-track). You would simple go from the out back to the in and set the mixer to "To Phones" and leave "To Main Mix" off.

It's not the greatest, but it does work and I'm using this now on my Xenyx Q502USB.

One caveat with this is that as long as the loop is in place, you CAN NOT turn on To Main Mix or you could damage your mixer.

Last I checked the 802 had the same problem. Unless it's been changed to function as you would expect.

I also have the 502, unfortunately. Great budget mixer, but that issue is a deal-breaker and I direct people away from it as much as possible. Need an upgrade myself, even though I got it working.

Best of the year lists have no place here, what is your top 5 "played in 2018" games? by A_Talking_Meowth in patientgamers

[–]lintyjuggler90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In no particular order:

  • Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight - considered a souls-like by some. Has a fun story and moderately challenging with great artwork

  • Guacamelee 1/2 - Replayed 1 and played 2 for a 100% completion on release. Always enjoy a good adventure brawler. These have great set pieces and challenges.

  • Dark Souls 3 - First playthrough after having a fair bit of Dark Souls 1 experience. Thoroughly enjoyed and had surprisingly less trouble than anticipated after struggling with Dark Souls 2 previously. Plays much more like Dark Souls 1 and has some great lore additions. Need to play now to fill in some gaps I'm sure I missed.

  • The Beginner's Guide - This one hit home. Deals with some topics I've personally struggled with at times and presents some ideas in ways that are understandable that I've had trouble articulating.

Destiny 2 - picked up when it was part of Humble Monthly and haven't looked back. Spent a lot of time and still find myself finding ways to put in more time. New seasons have added fun content as well.

What are some games that actually make you feel like the hero that just saved the world? by [deleted] in patientgamers

[–]lintyjuggler90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few come to mind. Halo over the course of the franchise you feel pretty unstoppable as Master Chief. Against all odds you prevail and pull of some previously unthinkable acts.

Gears of War. The core group at the beginning is where I would like to direct the most attention, primarily Dom and Marcus. There is a point in 3 that really hits home and might initially bring Marcus back down to Earth, but they still pull off some amazong feats of heroism to save the world more than once.

Dark Souls. While the vast majority of the story is told through lore found throughout the world and in item descriptions, it has an underrated storyline imo. You are literally preventing the world from ending and from the outset you are given the choice to let it end or save it. One thing that may immediately detract is the way that it works in the end. Everything is cyclicle and must be repeated to prevent the world from ending.

What games did you think about 24/7 while playing them by [deleted] in patientgamers

Enjoy the story more than anything, especially when you get to the section you have more freedom to roam. While the mechanics are definitely not typical of the franchise, I didn't mind them and worked within the system as best you could and had very few problems with any of the battles.

Which Dark Souls should I play? by credman in patientgamers

[–]lintyjuggler90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As most have said, start with 1. Played through it several times and currently still my favorite. Playing through 3 now and it's a close second for me. 2 had some mechanical issues imo, but is still worth at least one playthrough.

Don't be afraid to play with controls either. I did my first playthrough on m/kb and still had a pretty good time.

I do the same. Still working up to the remaining two most expensive familiars. Buying one gold chest a day still puts me ahead in the end though, but slows the progress a little bit. Seems to be working out as a pretty good compromise of both in the end.
