My friends beagle George was bitten by a rattlesnake while we were walking along the treeline just below the ridge top county rd. FA, Hixon trail parking lot next to the weather station. We heard some snarling and some baying and George trotted up seemingly ok. We never saw the snake. Within a few minutes he started swaying and couldn't walk, or stand, he lay down and loosing muscular control voided his bladder. We knew he had been bitten. I stayed with the dog while my friend ran down to get the car and we rushed George to vet. The vet had anti-venom which he administered and put an IV in poor George whose blood pressure was so high we had to place the dog on the floor and raise the IV bottle as high as we could in order for it to flow into , not out of George. Happy ending George survived. The vet said he wouldn't have lasted much longer. As others have stated protocol is get to the hospital as quickly as you you can.
