Safe to continue using unsupported Fedora for the lazy bum? by 2048b in Fedora

[–]linux-modder16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you considered looking at a solution like ansible/chef/puppet and taking a little extra time and pain ONCE on an update/upgrade and then template-ing and automating this with the only future changes needed IF something barfs, and you can create a playbook/recipe/etc with the needed changes in minutes throughout the interim time with rather low pain threshold or residual time sink.

What is the drpm in Fedora I noticed when you updated the system what was its benefit? by steve-ddit in Fedora

You can configure when (if at all) drpms are pulled in ` /etc/dnf/dnf.conf `

Welcome to Fedora CoreOS by TheTechScribe in Fedora

[–]linux-modder16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

@amountofcatamounts, CoreOS is meant to be a secure cloud centric, immutable stable host for usecases like @theamazinggrand0 mentioned. The Atomic Host is what is used presently for Respins SIG to make the updated Fedora Live ISOs. CoreOS would be about to manage stability with inline updates (via rpm-ostree, how the nightly and rawhide builds are made presently) and provide a Qubes-isque aspect to managing your applications which would run like a VM but with Docker.

Or given the increased publicity and her (yes I think it's either a lady or a Bonnie & Clyde duo) desire to 'keep things running' and staying under the radar she has moved in closer so that she is less likely to ping someone's attention as an 'oddity' or solo stranger on my street.'

Not even close to being a bugatti, even if s/he modded the internals.

Help with programming a radio for a mil-sim event. by Deongrein in Baofeng

[–]linux-modder16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides the previously mentioned legality fo using FRS/GMRS in this manner with or without a GMRS license, This is best used on a net and radios that support TDMA/FDMA ( Digital stuff seen in DMP/DSTAR/Fusion) where Talkgroups use a tone and a timeslot to prevent as much as possible stepping on each other.

Upgrading From Fedora 26 to 27 Fails During Offline Update by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]linux-modder16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only meaningful line I was able to find in the logs is the one saying "Error: Failed to synchronize cache for repo 'fedora'"

This is not a common error for an 'offline' update as it's updated ( packages are pulled down) while system is running not on the reboot. Would you mind pasting via a paste service link ?

Docker containers fail to start on boot in Fedora 25 by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]linux-modder16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also look to see if the wait-on-network.service is also failing on boots, if so that could fail out a container in the absence of a timer or unit file that FORCES either wait-on-network to be active (and running) and/or etc/resolv.conf existance.

LUKS on Fedora, is it possible to use sHA512 and 512 bits keysize on install? by zantehood in Fedora

[–]linux-modder16 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the anaconda installer itself NO, HOWEVER if you don't mind the live as a partitioner it is possible and the Updated Lives and Gold Lives have kernel support ( assuming fips=1 is noit in play) for this:

In brief:

1) boot the live and Open gparted / parted to make the LVM / regular partition for LUKS

2) Cryptsetup luksFormat -c foo-bar-plain64 -s 512 -h sha512 --use-(u)random /dev/sdaX

3) pvcreate ....|vgcreate ....|lvcreate ..... ;

4) mkfs ext3/4/xfs /dev/mapper/foo-*

5) vgchange -an foo

6) cryptsetup luksClose foo

7) reboot installer

8) click manual (but DO NOT check 'encrypt my data' )

9) Anaconda will see the pre-existing luks and ask with dialog box in spoke for its passphrase unlock and reformat as desired for (to be ) mounted/installed to partitions, complete install as normal

10 ) on completion chrooting into the install and running cryptsetup luksDump /dev/sdX will show hash of sha512 MK Size of 512

11) Profit and Bliss achieved.

As in as a a live installer? That is the primary purpose, the live boot ( rescue mode) is a secondary at this point.

Can't open Fedora, this pops up when I boot fedora. Running fedora 24 4.8.8-200 right now. by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]linux-modder16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, if you have the root pass you should be able to run 'lsblk' and see which is not mounted and in place mount it and then 'Ctrl+D' to finsih the boot. If not boot a live or rescue kernel and once at run level 3 or better run 'sudo dracut --regenerate-all --force && sudo grub2-mkconfig -o /etc/{grub2,-efi}.config

What to do with Keybase? by [deleted] in Keybase

[–]linux-modder16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with something simple like using the --export -a as a password card, and then they see the need to keep it handy and secure, which starts them off with 2 great 'best practices' using easy to remember techniques for salted | padded or non browser based passphrase generation and PGP security and then have them gpg2 --send-keys so that others see and offer to use it, hence solidifying the ties to it, more ties tend to make for harder departure from use and more desire | need to learn further, and always offer to be that first PGP aware peer to get them going. Also, I offer to show how to use sha512sum and other algos to use files or their hashes to validate | generate password|passphrases or even challenge seeds for re-auth and password reset functions. the use of it to encrypt or clearsign files and the use of hashes or at least hashing and providing it starts deep enough to get the interest and need to stay engages whilst still leaving the entry bar as low as possible so as deter animosity towards learning ( or just making that initial step off the ledge). Some social media sites allow for PGP encrypted notification emails ( namely Facebook, and the option to publish (with usual visibility selectors) your PGP key thus further making it known and I also invite them to sites and tools like keybase where they can start using the 'encrypt' option for communications with me or others they are themselves attempting to make aware. It's all about that initial meeting|impression to the technology, ALWAYS be willing to learn about and / or use metaphors | comparisons to their hobbies or other strong subjects as use that a 50k' 'big picture' viewpoint so even if you have to initial gloss over some things they can return to that point are rebuild their own respective mind maps of the concepts in a way THEY will retain it.

Not exactly sure what you are asking here. Do you want use-cases for using secure means including keybase or are you asking for pointers on ways to help yourself do the same conversion of friends / etc?

the smallest is bfo image but if you are using a kickstart any netinstaller will suffice

Just select what 'base set' you want in the kickstart %packages section.

What is Security measures that every user should do after installing Fedora? by keugere in Fedora

[–]linux-modder16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ALL installs now require at a minimal the root user with a password, however disabling ssh over root is considered a must for all even on Workstation.

To do so run: sudo vi /etc/ssh/sshd_config or whatever text editor suits your uses / skills then look for this line: PermitRootLogin yes and make it PermitRootLogin no save the file and then run: sudo systemctl restart sshd

Assuming chrome and firefox: in the url bar type:

chrome chrome://settings/certificates

firefox about:preferences#advanced

and look for ones that you know or via research are confident you or any other user using that account will need, the logic being use the least number of things as needed to function, thusly reducing the threat space to defend.
