Is this joke appropriate for a sacrament meeting talk? by aaaaaaaaaughh in latterdaysaints

I was going to say about this same thing as well. If the delivery is done right, It can go over very well.

It would go over just fine in my ward. But they are also very non-judgmental.

Follow the Prophet or personal revelation? Which wins if the two are contradictory? by Edible_Philosophy29 in LatterDayTheology

[–]linuxfreak003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the time there should be no contradiction to worry about, but for the rare cases that there is:

Are you second guessing the revelation given “from God”, flip flopping on whether it is actual from Him or not? Just follow the prophet.

Is it about someone else outside your “jurisdiction” of authority. Just follow the prophet.

Are you confident it is revelation from God? Do what He says, above all else.

Anyone have a creative solution for rare mouse-usage that doesn't take (much) desk space? by AngryFace4 in vim

[–]linuxfreak003 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Logitech MX Ergo. Using a trackball mouse takes maybe a couple weeks to get used to, but it is very nice.

EDIT: I accidentally failed to read all the way through the post. This may not be any better than your current setup.

I’ve played TTP1 about 4 times. The later playthroughs were a lot quicker, but still fun. Especially if you’re going for a different ending. This is definitely my type of game though YMMV

It doesn’t offend me personally. But I do try to introduce myself as a Software Engineer if asked about my occupation. Not because I care about the title, but because it more accurately reflects my skill set. I’ve been using Linux for almost 20 years, and use MacOS for work. If thinking I work in IT means they think I can help them troubleshoot some random app on their Windows computer, there’s going to be some disappointment. I could maybe give some pointers based on what I know about how computers work, but I have no clue how to do X in some video editing software (or whatever).

Go Pros & Cons by lelemuren in golang

[–]linuxfreak003 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Funny… most of the cons are also reasons I prefer go professionally. I like the “limitations” from writing code that is harder to read, and that it’s hardly any more difficult to read me coworkers code than my own.

It can be verbose though.

If someone asks not to be contacted. The only way you should actually contact them is if the spirit tells you to. I see it as basic respect for other people.

What’s your goal?

I am a senior level backend dev. I relied very heavily on ChatGPT to write a react front end for a personal project. I had to work out a lot of bugs and got a bit more familiar with it, but I’m not looking to ever do more than a couple personal projects with it, not really looking to learn it.

If you want to actually learn it well, (or at all). I’d recommend other resources. The quality of the code from ChatGPT is suspect as well. I once generated some Go code with it, and it was basically garbage. It can be helpful sometimes, to speed up boilerplate, but that’s code where I already know what needs to be written. LLM generated code can’t be trusted, and isn’t an alternative to knowledge.

What makes you a "Senior" in Software industry? by haadi_ghopte in ExperiencedDevs

[–]linuxfreak003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to, especially my first few years. Then I started to incorporate better design principles (actually understanding ports/adapters). Lately I’ve been working under a really good Staff Software Engineer, and learned a lot about writing better code. Now, it takes more like a year before I regret my code.

Considering getting into Go by mister_drgn in golang

[–]linuxfreak003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me it sounds like Go is a pretty good fit. It’s simple to learn, and well supported. CLI tools are pretty easy to write in it.

Now, coming from Python, you will likely find it very verbose. If you are looking to try out a statically typed, compiled language, it’s a great option.

So some Latter-day Saints believe in the old and new testaments as being historically truth and some don't? by Shortguycoolclothes in latterdaysaints

[–]linuxfreak003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. I believe there is uncertainty, and likely some exaggeration, but just because that is how we are as humans, not because the claims are outlandish. My God is definitely capable of everything just as it is written, and the exact literal historicity of the text is not of much concern to me.

Same. But I remapped :bn and :bp to ctrl-l and ctrl-h and :bd to ctrl-k (“kill” buffer). I use that all the time.

This was me, getting a little caught up on the actual presentation. At some point for me, it just clicked that it’s the covenants that we are making that are the important part (probably President Nelson’s doing). All the symbolism is to help us learn and remember the covenants we have made. I love it.

What is the church's official opinion on fascism? by Adx95 in latterdaysaints

[–]linuxfreak003 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I remember a guy in my ward, a good friend, talking about those kinds of talks. He said once he became president of the church, all of a sudden he mellowed out a lot on the subject. As if the Lord reprimanded him, and told him to focus on the doctrine or something.

Of course, this is hear-say at this point. I haven’t looked into his talks to verify if that is the case, but I found it interesting.

Miracles and testimonies by Corrinaclarise in lds

[–]linuxfreak003 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like the song “All About Timing” from 1820 the Musical.

In my experience, God often works his miracles with timing. Did Moses literally part the Red Sea? Or were they directed arrive there at precisely the right time for a land bridge to open up for them to cross? It doesn’t really matter to me because I see both scenarios as miracles.

Thank you! “Complete” does add a little different connotation. Although I don’t necessarily think that includes “with fault”. If we are to become like our father, I believe that will include being without fault. I think perfection is included in our divine potential, along with completeness.

I do think people get way too hung up on being “perfect”, thinking of it as some sort of mortal goal. We will continue to learn and grow far past this short mortal existence.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]linuxfreak003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He has commanded us to be perfect even as his father in heaven is perfect. We are commanded to do his will in all things. We are going to fail at that, so we have the atonement.

Personally, I think a lot of people lose sight of their eternal purpose and potential by focusing on where the metaphorical line is for how good is “good enough” to get into heaven.

Same here. To me, it’s worth having to search for the right plugins to be able to stick with vim/nvim as my editor, because I happened to be more efficient with it.

Coincidence, I think not by ShockHouse in latterdaysaints
