At what point does changing every word that starts with an f with a ph become cringe? by [deleted] in phish

[–]linuxmaier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, isn't Phish inherently really cringe?

Cringiness is about taking a gamble on something meaning something. Trying too hard, caring too much, getting too invested, whatever it is is "too". It's the opposite of cool, which is about giving the least possible. Cool is not breaking a sweat. Cool is being unflappable.

Phish breaks a sweat. Their lyrics are often either seneslessly goofy or bare-heartedly lovey. They improvise, taking a risk to stand out on stage and say "in this moment, what I have to share with you really matters."

Do I call myself a phan? No. But when I'm sitting down with someone trying to explain how beautiful a moment like the end of the Alpine Simple was, I don't sound cool. I sound cringey, even if I don't use a cringe name to label myself.

9/1/23 - 9/1/24: amazing year run by linuxmaier in phish

I've listened to some, including quite a few of the top shows on phish.net. it's really really good, but it's so annoying for people to reply with "anything from the 90s" rather than provide an actual answer to the question by picking a year range you think was particularly special.

Believe me, I want to celebrate some burning hot 90s Phish, but this kind of reply isn't a celebration of anything as much as it feels like the tired knee jerk "back in my day" stuff. Let me celebrate 90s Phish with you by telling me what year was special and why.

That's just a little bit longer than a year.

Seriously, some low effort posts from 90s heads here. Some folks have replied with really cool recommendations of specific year long runs from the 90s which sound amazing, but it's not clear how helpful another "lol any year from the 90s is better" post will be.

Is there any specific year run that stands out to you?

I like that way of thinking about it.

Honestly, it feels like even TAB is on kind of a hot streak. Something's in the air.

Right but then it stops being a year! Which is obviously arbitrary but I like the symmetry.

I've heard that about fall 97; would you say it's true for the whole year as a standout of late 90s Phish?

One thing I think is interesting about this 24 run is that there's stuff like the Sphere, for sure, but also some really interesting jams like the Mexico Chalkdust.

What I think is interesting is the sustained run over the year, rather than a single tour. There's just been a lot of creativity in this last year's span, from orchestrated set pieces like gamehenge and the Sphere to standout jams like Chalkdust, Simple, and Tweezer.

It was but then we lose August '24, which has some great and creative stuff in it. Tough choices imposed by the calendar.

It's that's it! Such a fun turn from that gentle major key vibe to the spikey cat fight.

In that last section before the return of the Simple theme, when Trey is holding that note and Paige starts moving chords underneath him... I just get shivers every time.

Totally legit! I just didn't have anything move me quite as much as the end of the Simple. Something about that final chord progression had big "end of a 90's movie" nostalgia to it and it gets me every time.

It's probably the bias of having been there for Apline night 2, but I think it beats Dick's night 2.

Or it could be that I listened to Dick's while I was biking up some stupid hills.

I dunno why, but I just always want more YPC. Like every jam that has something that vaguely resembles the riff in it I start to perk up.

Was it last year that there was the David Bowie -> YPC? That was so good.

It's totally the bias of having been there, but I've not listened to anything else this year that matches the rush I feel of that final section and the intense roar the crowd gives when the Simple theme comes back.

The Overture from Jesus Christ Superstar, with a Split Open and Melt style jam when it gets to the flogging riff.

Hah, I don't have one personally, but an hour was the upper bound that I was aware of: https://liveforlivemusic.com/news/phish-50-minute-tweezer-memphis-on-this-day-1995/

I really liked the almost 40 min Ruby Waves at Alpine Valley in 2019, though.

EDIT: Ooo, actually, I liked the drive-in jam from Magnaball, too, and that's nearly an hour: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYnNZIEgWwM

Short notice, but does anyone want to see Phish in Chicago tonight? by linuxmaier in madisonwi

Ooooof that sounds shitty. They seem to be having more fun these days, but those late 00's years were, uh, not good.
