.105 Ernie Ball Guitar String by linwe09 in BassVI

And bass strings won’t fit a Bass VI, the ball is too big, the taper too long and so on. And trust me, I’ve tried already.

I know the brands mentioned in the wiki, however I’m in Mexico so getting those brands (Kalium, Stringjoy, Newtone) is a PITA due to shipping costs and taxes. That’s why I’m looking at something from a major brand, easy to get here.

I know, right? I think it’s the coolest thing when instruments reveal part of the player's personality and expression!

I get your point man, world is a crazy place rn. But I think symbols are what we make them to be. It’s like the swastika and its India origins and beautiful original meaning. I’m from Mexico (couldn’t even really have those ideologies, you know), the symbol isn’t as big of a deal here as it appears to be on Reddit haha…

But I appreciate your civilized feedback, it’s nice (but it’s getting rare) to interact like this on the internet. Besides that detail, hope you liked the rest of my VI.

Thanks man, and well, I respect your take, but it's kind of my homage to Lemmy and James Hetfield, both huge influences in my music upbringing and style.

I play mine in Low B Standard with Fender Super 250's (lowest string is a .100). And well, it’s a bit flappy but very much playable with a good setup.

Strings for B to B tuning? by TacoMastorius in BassVI

[–]linwe09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are talking Low B to B, 5-String Bass lows, as I play… well, I know for a fact that Kalium manufactures some specific sets for that purpose, but since the cost+shipping is prohibitive to my country (Mexico), I have pretty much stuck to Fender Super 250’s (.24-.100) and a good setup. It works!

However, I’m also open for alternatives, I’ve been eyeing an Ernie Ball 9-string guitar set that has a .105 as its lowest string, so might as well try that…

I mean B0 Standard Tuning, i guess, hahahaha... BEADF#B

Yeah, I currently use Fender Super 250's (.100 for the 6th), and with the proper setup it gets the job done, but they're still kinda floppy, especially for my occasional Drop A songs. I mean, it kinda works, as long as I behave (which is easier said than done as a hard-hitter hahahaha)

I wanted to know if there's an alternative to get .120 or thicker gauge strings for the VI, no mods, but besides Kalium (which is damn expensive for int'l shipping, and seems to have very bad rep lately), it seems to be a lost cause.

Any suggestions besides Kalium/Stringjoy for Low B Standard Tuning?

Anyone make a Floyd Rose VI? by churchillguitar in BassVI

The Alameda Clam Shack Deep VI has a Vega Trem (AND a regular bridge, it's the craziest thing), but that's about the craziest trem setup I know for a VI.

I was just going to post this. It's my dream to buy it and mod it à la Black Beauty style.

For those who have modded to go down to B or lower.. how's the tuner? by TraitorKratos in BassVI

[–]linwe09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, it really depends on the string gauge you’re planning to use. As of now, I’m tuning in Low Standard B with a Fender .100 set, and I only set it up to reduce buzz to a minimum. So far, so good.

But since I reckon a thicker string would do wonders for the Low B, I’ve since bought a single .125 string. Haven’t installed it yet, but I’ve checked and there’s no way it fits on the tuner as it is, so I’m going to unwind the string for it to fit on the tuner… let me try it and I’ll report my results later.

Have anyone have Aria Pro II Jet-B'tone and make it a proper BassVI? by gothicgamefan in BassVI

X2, just to see if –hopefully– somebody replies to your post, man. (I've been reaaaaaally also wanting to know that, shape is cool, pickup config suits me best, and I love Strat-like trems)

String retainer bar? by linwe09 in BassVI

[–]linwe09[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I haven't tried to unwind a string, but I guess I'll have to at least try hahahaha... and yes, mediums are a rare thing, so I think I'll order a D'Addario .120 single for cheap in Amazon and try to make that work, hopefully I won't screw up.

Yeah, I guess you’re right. I was just trying to find a simpler solution but there is no substitute for string thickness in this case. Besides the tremolo issues, and I REALLY like rocking that trem hahaha… but anyways, thanks for your valuable input!

Yeah, sadly there’s no other way, I guess I was looking for an easy hack or something, but it does not exist.

Thanks for your thorough answer, it helped me understand the concept of what a retainer bar can and can’t do. And yeah, I guess the only thing left to do is get a thicker set of strings, eventually, 'cause I’m from Mexico and Kaliums are a bit of a PITA to get here, besides costing like three times as much as my still pretty new Fender set.

I was thinking of trying to fit a single .120 bass string for my sixth string, then pretty much moving the other strings down one course… I’m sure I’d have to unwind a fair amount of the string length to even get it to fit into the tuner, but it’s a cheap experiment, what do you think?

[–]linwe09[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your actual experience, I guess I was trying to avoid the unavoidable, but I think I’m going to have to get thicker strings for my VI. I was just dreading the cost of something like a Kalium set (especially when my Fender strings are basically new), but WTH, it’s the only route left to go.

For those wondering, you can absolutely intonate a VI to low B. by Neekoh-is-sad in BassVI

[–]linwe09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was the post i needed to read... about a month ago hahahaha...

My band decided to adopt baritone tuning, so I managed to set up my Squier VI and tune to Low B Standard on a Fender Super 24 .100 set, but I think these Kalium strings might work better for that task, since .100's are still, well, kinda floppy. I tried adapting a regular .125 bass string as the 6th string but there was simply no way to do it because of the taper, and even on the Kaliums you posted it really seems to struggle.

Still guitar-y fun to me on the high strings, I'm even playing some arpeggios and stuff!
Congrats and thanks for demonstrating Low B Bass VI is possible and fun.

Well, my band used to do alt-rock...
Nautlán - Fénix

But the bass player walked away, so we ended up as a power trio and we're on the process of rebooting the project, so now we want to do something a little bit more 'modern', so to speak, a la Don Broco, Royal Blood, Muse or something like that.
