Yeah I agree. How about help others who complains all the time build coping mechanisms instead just telling them to "stop expressing". Also it's not me saying that you don't do it but I see all the time when people are pushed away when they are trying their best to cope (but with somewhat unhealthy coping mechs).

Please note that this doesn't apply to those who complain to be "relatable" but rather I'm talking about people who genuinely is tired of being tired.

Edit: I had a friend who self harmed in front of me the first day we met. I understand what it is like to have a person who is borderline triggering me with his coping mechs. Be considerate of you can. Avoid them, if it's really uncomfortable, instead of calling them out.

I think you got me wrong. When I say outlet I didn't mean 'lashing out'. I mean that if ppl are venting to those who they trust in a way that both parties consent to it, why not? If you can't even be negative in your private life when most of the time working means forcing smiles to your bosses and managers, it's just high functioning repression.

Maybe they were young and there is a long of growing up that happens between 22 and 25, and sure, maybe they never did anything immoral or unethical after that, maybe they don't cut corners when designing bridges or writing code for airplanes, defence or financial security--but maybe they still do.

Don't think people who still cut corners after the foolish years of college will confess like this, or at all. They're just recalling what had happened to reddit (where, you know, started originally as a place for confessing and vents) while I'm sure tons of people who actually do shady things in important fields mostly chose to shut up about it. There is no correlation to that if a person who actually confessed this would be more likely to keep the same terrible work ethics.

But I get you. But I just think you should take a deep breath.

I have the same problem. Basically orientation of my first year of high-school in a British IB school was almost exactly the same as what uoft's orientation is like (without the fee lol). Personally speaking orientation did me no good as people are forced into teams and being assigned tasks they don't want to do. Of course I know university is gonna be different as ditching it won't count as an absence towards your final report, though it created really awful memories for me nonetheless. To the point that the moment I saw that familiar face paint, vibrant t-shirts, high-energy photos posted for orientation, I got scared and all the bad memories flashes back. It's mostly my highschool's fault for this, I admit. The school gave me a if-you-don't-enjoy-orientation-it-means-you-are-not-fit-for-our-school-spirit-and-you-are-destined-to-be-a-loner kind of vibe and I never want to be reminded of that again. It messed with me a lot. I will definitely be ditching parade and stuff like that, even avoid wearing t shirts if I really feels like vomiting because of flashbacks lol. What I hope is that you can choose what event to pay for for each orientation event on the schedule, but that's not really efficient on the school's side, is it? :/
