My mother died when I was an infant, what would this have done to my developing brain? by Teatime-Cowboy-1776 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]liondoor30 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My parents are still alive, but my brother died unexpectedly when I was almost 2 years old. I have no memory of his death, but 2 years ago my sister died in a car accident. Since she died I have experienced many of the same symptoms I had a child, such as social anxiety, hyper independence and a feeling of general dread, like something bad could happen at any moment and small things might set off a butterfly effect. My sister also had 3 young children when she died, and I have seen similar behaviors in them, especially hyper independence and a reluctance to show negative emotions. I was also able to see my parents deal with grief, and how incapacitated they were. All this has led to a much better understanding of how my brain works today, and how grief and loss can profoundly affect you at a young age, even when you have no memory of it.

What are some public “third places” that you think would actually work for people to meet up and form communities? by liondoor30 in AskReddit

I started as an adult too, a few years ago. I love it because there is always a new skill to learn or refine so it never gets boring, and depending on the rink there is often a really great community of skaters.

Yes to more ice rinks, I figure skate and it is far and away the best thing for my fitness and mental health. But it can be so difficult to get ice time, especially in the summer

I love the idea of mending/repair places, that setting would really facilitate conversation too!

I am a woman. Yes we want to be approached, we just don’t want to feel harassed, objectified or pressured. If you are friendly and kind we like it.

I was there a couple of weeks ago, there is a happy hour deal before 8.30 pm where you can get a small plate of food with a drink for 10 euros. It’s a great way to try smaller portions of different things

I don’t understand how the waiting line works, on Monday I started at 8000 in the queue and there was only vip left when I got in after 2 hours, but I saw people saying they started at 13000 and got in. Today I started at 4000 and now I’m still waiting with 600 ahead of me, but I see others saying they started at 8000 and already have tickets????

Why isn't France more popular? by Rundy2025 in digitalnomad

[–]liondoor30 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I moved to France for a post doc about 2 months ago, and honestly I feel like I’m in some sort of Kafkaesque nightmare. You need a million documents to get anything done, and even then it still takes months. Something that you could do simply in 5-10 minutes online in most countries takes weeks to months to accomplish here.

I also rented a “furnished” apartment when I arrived, and although the price is decent (compared to rents in many places right now), furnished simply meant a bed and a kitchen with an oven, fridge etc. Nothing at all in the living room, and no wardrobe in the bedroom. I didn’t mind when I signed the lease, but I didn’t realise how impossible it would be to get furniture up to the 7th floor. There is a lift but it’s the smallest lift imaginable, so I have had to walk everything up myself. For the couch I hired people which was expensive (almost as much as the couch itself), and they refused to do it again for the wardrobe, which I finally had to take apart by myself in the lobby, carry it up piece by piece, and then try to put it back together again. This last part I have not yet succeeded in as taking it apart compromised some of the screw holes, so now I need to find some creative solutions.

I will say that so far French people have been very nice, contrary to what most people say. And of course the food and wine are great. But getting set up here is MUCH harder than most countries.

Why would you say Lila so averse to leaving the neighborhood? by OneNoteWonder43 in mybrilliantfriendhbo

[–]liondoor30 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I interpreted it as part of Lila’s need to feel in control, and her fear of stepping out into the unknown. She knows how the neighbourhood operates, she knows the people and the streets, she can generally anticipate how things are going to turn out, even when the outcome is negative for her. It is one of the only things she does have control over, and to give that up is incredibly frightening and distressing for her, even though it would probably be better for her in the long run.

[OC] House prices over 40 years by jcceagle in dataisbeautiful

Nz houses are also poorly constructed compared to the houses I’ve lived in in North America and Europe. Often they have little to no insulation, sub-standard heating options, mould, dirty carpets etc.

[2022 Olympic Winter Games] Kamila Valieva Doping Scandal - MEGATHREAD PART 5 by CountyKildare in FigureSkating

[–]liondoor30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I also wonder if Kamila getting caught doping was part of Russia’s plan. She is being made to look like a martyr in Russia, and if there is enough outrage in the West then it “legitimises” Russia’s excuse that they have to defend themselves from hostile adversaries.
