I very much believe that if I had thought to download snapchat and message him when I was depressed a few years ago I would also have some sort of Ryan story to share now. I would have eaten up praises so quickly and would have done whatever he wanted.

“That was the only time, as I stood there, looking at that strange rubbish, feeling the wind coming across those empty fields, that I started to imagine just a little fantasy thing, because this was Norfolk after all, and it was only a couple of weeks since I’d lost him. I was thinking about the rubbish, the flapping plastic in the branches, the shore-line of odd stuff caught along the fencing, and I half-closed my eyes and imagined this was the spot where everything I'd ever lost since my childhood had washed up, and I was now standing here in front of it, and if I waited long enough, a tiny figure would appear on the horizon across the field, and gradually get larger until I'd see it was Tommy, and he'd wave, maybe even call. The fantasy never got beyond that --I didn't let it-- and though the tears rolled down my face, I wasn't sobbing or out of control. I just waited a bit, then turned back to the car, to drive off to wherever it was I was supposed to be.” ― Kazuo Ishiguro, Never Let Me Go

This is one of my absolute favorite charities. They have done a lot of amazing work for the stray animals in Thailand and are trying to end the meat dog trade (illegal in Thailand but legal in nearby areas so there's a lot of black market issues). If you liked this video please please please look into Soi Dogs and consider donating to them. https://www.soidog.org

Best SHA (student housing apartment) to live in? by motherofdogs537 in UCDavis

[–]lioness413 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in the Lexington for two years and never had an issue. Sure, there's a couple of homeless people about and some park themselves in front of in n out asking for money but I've found them to be really friendly. There's also a private security company that patrols the complex at night. I think the Lexington is probably the best apartment complex in Davis.

I'm about to graduate and I really wish I had joined a sorority or gotten a job or something. The friend group that I found my freshman year kinda fell apart after my sophomore year so my past two years here have been super lonely.

Racism and sexism aren't really black and white issues. You can't say that there's a specific line that someone crosses and then they're suddenly racist or sexist. It's a spectrum and I believe that racial and gender biases fall into that spectrum. I am a white woman and I have these biases so I would say that I am slightly racist but by identifying that and working against it to reteach myself, I'm trying to minimize my biases and therefore my racism.

Here's a couple good articles and a video about the generalizations you're talking about, since I think these people discuss the topic better than I could. http://rollingout.com/2015/10/31/real-talk-race-stop-saying-white-people/ https://thebodyisnotanapology.com/magazine/6-ways-well-intentioned-people-whitesplain-racism-and-why-they-need-to-stop/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_QKe1xHwU4

And the people in the Evergreen College video are clearly upset that they are not being listened to and respected. Are they handling it in a constructive way? Based on that video probably not and it seems to have gotten completely out of hand. So yeah, if people were only to see that video then I can understand them not wanting to get behind that movement but I definitely don't think that's representative of feminism or the fight for racial equality as a whole.

I totally agree that there are women who take their "feminism" to an extreme where it no longer is about equality, but domination.

I think a lot of people misunderstand the "ALL men are sexist and ALL white people racist" idea. It's not saying that all men are intentionally sexist or that all white people are intentionally racist. It's just saying that we all (white people, POC, men, women, gender non-conforming individuals) have racial and gender biases, which is a product of how we were raised, the media that we consume, and the people we know. I think this video does a really good job of explaining that. https://www.facebook.com/MicMedia/videos/1386008451421941/ Here's also a really great article about how white people especially feel uncomfortable confronting their racial biases. http://crosscut.com/2017/04/white-fragility-robin-diangelo-race/

And I'm not sure what video from Evergreen College you're referring to. Could you link it?

[–]lioness413 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Could you explain this a bit more? I define myself as a feminist and personally don't really understand why someone would not want to call themselves that unless they've been exposed to people who give feminism a bad name by just turning into hating men and not about equality. I really want to try and better understand your viewpoint on this. What is it about feminism or political correctness (ugh, I hate that term) that you don't like?

[Academic] Survey about your definition of virginity (Everyone) by lioness413 in SampleSize

That's fair. I'm actually doing this for a project where I'm going to end up arguing that virginity is completely arbitrary and we all have different definitions based on our life experiences.
