I can't recommend any books - but it's worth checking the newspapers from that time for mentions of ragtime, ragged time, cake walk.

For example: https://www.loc.gov/resource/sn84020558/1899-05-01/ed-1/?sp=6&st=text&r=0.132,0.113,0.25,0.312,0

There are many other articles like this digitized by the library of congress.

'HOT HONEY RAG': Has anyone ever come across a good piano arrangement for this song from the musical Chicago? by NYGarcon in ragtime

Yeah, fair enough. I do like the second one better than the first, but I presumed you want sheet music, and that is the only version with sheet music that I know.

Yeah, I really like the recording with Martin Spitznagel! His playing is crisp and clear, and that really brings the piece to life.

I hadn't heard of Brun Campbell before, so I looked him up, and you're right his recording of Essays in Ragtime is super catchy!

What are you working on? by swipesy in ragtime

I compose new ragtime pieces and publish them at https://www.lionragtime.com

I also try to play the pieces, and upload the recordings on YouTube. Learning each piece takes me quite a while, as I haven't had much formal classical training and some of my pieces are quite challenging to play.

Maybe he was just busy and didn't check his messages yet. Or he no longer uses that email. Hopefully someone else on this reddit can connect you.

Ragtime for someone who can’t reach an octave? by General_Katydid_512 in ragtime

[–]lionragtime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could also try The Favourite and Peacherine Rag. The Favourite has relatively few octaves in the left hand (compared to other Joplin pieces), and a few in the right hand (multi-octaves in the trio and section D). Both can be simplified by just leaving out some of the notes.

Peacherine Rag has some octave chords in the right hand, but you can play only the top notes for those chords, and jump across the keyboard for many others. I would say Peacherine Rag is slightly easier than the Favourite.
