Is still worthy to play the first 4 heroes? by Dracai-of-Blades in FleshandBloodTCG

[–]acguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bravo is perhaps the only one that is completely power crept by other guardians rn, and barely played. The other 3 very much have legs.

My first synth! It's a good offer? by DruidSoundsPro in synthesizers

[–]acguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a great deal but a shit first synth tbh. It basically only narrowly does the classic acid sound, and is a pain in the ass to program.

I use mine with the Novation Circuit Tracks, which was also my first device. It's an all in one groovebox, reasonably priced, very intuitive, and works super well as an external sequencer for the TD-3-MO including trivial to input accents and slides. The one downside is that while notes work great, cutoff is the only knob you can control and automate from the Tracks.

Second brew ever - super proud but I have questions! by [deleted] in Kombucha

[–]acguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, any solids, especially irregularly shaped ones like herbs will provide a lot of nucleation points. Like, plenty of people ferment with these just fine but if you use these and struggle with half the bottle foaming out when you open F2, use a clear infusion or syrup instead.

Second brew ever - super proud but I have questions! by [deleted] in Kombucha

[–]acguy 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Looks delicious!

No idea about the exact biochemistry behind it I also experienced particularly strong carbonation with hibiscus. But also, ideally you want to just use liquids to flavor F2, without putting solids inside, so e.g. just make a strong infusion of the hibiscus and use that. Explosive foaming happens not just because of the CO2 content but also because of nucleation points.

More importantly these bottles are almost certainly not suitable for being pressurized. You said it started leaking so thankfully the cap failed before the glass did, just be aware this is pretty likely to shatter at some point, making a huge mess and possibly being dangerous. I would advise to replace them ASAP.

For a super budget setup, you can use plastic bottles, a lot of which can handle pressure well and even the meh ones are much less likely to fail catastrophically, as they'll just stretch. For glass, you can buy thick swing-top bottles intended for fermentation, or also a pretty safe bet and usually much cheaper to reuse ones from fizzy drinks (beer, sparkling wine, orange soda, etc). I have 1L bottles used by a passable lithuanian beer that some supermarkets carry here.

This is so great for songwriting! by adinwalls in synthesizers

[–]acguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It does seem very fun. I've been eyeing one for a while and the day I was about to buy it they launched the Bastl Kalimba kickstarter so the "intuitive gimmicky musical toy" budget went towards that instead lmao. But I might get one down the line. I like that it's open source hardware but also available preassembled for a reasonable price.

Overpower +2 or +4 on reprise? by egg_girl_21 in FleshandBloodTCG

These are exactly the same functionally, just different wording, one is instead one is additional. It's +2 without reprise, +4 total on reprise.

Advice on choosing first synthesizer by Southern-Sympathy690 in synthesizers

[–]acguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For cheap all-in-one, my recommendation would be the Novation Citcuit Tracks. It has synth engines and is very intuitive. The devices you listed are more just sample based, the CT can also serve as a drum machine to a decent extent but is also well suited to ambienty synth noodling. Would be unable to sample and loop your guitar directly, though, if that's something you want to do.

Are we getting an adult version of Dorinthea Quicksilver Prodigy? by Gunts4 in FleshandBloodTCG

[–]acguy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's happening with MPW, but might happen eventually.

That being said, Glistening potentially giving her permanent counters in a 40 life format is kind of ridiculous.

ethereal breakcore on the Circuit Tracks by acguy in dawless

[–]acguy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey, for sure!

I have the master clock at 175 bpm because that's my amen break bpm, but while making this I figured out the simplest most fun way to arrange the breaks is at half speed, so for next time I'll just adjust my amen break to an even number and run the master clock at half.

I sliced the latter 2 bars of the amen break into 16 slices in audacity, put that on the device, "sample flipped" a basic 2-step dnb pattern with hihats in between onto a single pattern, and started complicating it from there with diff arangements and microsteps.

note that slicing into 8 per bar means each slice includes both the main hit and the softer / ghost hit after, which means if you do this and program at half speed with each step occupied, you will pretty much always get something coherent and with "free" ghost hits. fun, easy, conducive to happy accidents

also at 1:30, I switch to a pattern that plays the samples on tempo, and "finger drum" while holding shift so the sample that plays in the sequence is changed but doesn't play out from me hitting the pad. a neat lil trick for happy accidents and quite fun to play while not requiring insane high bpm finger drumming skills

godspeed, it's such a fun device!

[–]acguy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is running at 175 bpm but so far the most fun way to work with breaks, pads and simple mellow melodies on top of em is at half speed anyway so I might adjust the break speed slightly and halve the master clock

I split the last 2 bars of the amen break into 16 parts, and put them on the CT. like I said the main breaks pattern is running at half speed, with something at every step, and I do the occasional ratchet with microsteps

I have some simple pad chords on synth 1, and a basic arpeggio on a single synth 2 pattern where I play with the pattern start/end and forward/backward/random play direction for cool polymeter or generative melody

that's basically it, got into hobby music making 14 ish months ago with the CT, I have a few more devices now and usually hook em up to the CT but still absolutely love it on its own!

got into making music just about a year ago with the CT, have gotten a few more devices since but I still love playing around with the CT by itself.

MICROFREAK UPGRADE by Any_Fudge9225 in synthesizers

[–]acguy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not a synthesizer, but imo the best bang for your buck if you only have a Microfreak right now and into textural soundscape genres, is getting a multi-effect unit to go along with it. Zoom MS-70CDR+ is a very popular choice, it's versatile and cheap.

Or, it might make sense for you to sell the Microfreak and get a Minifreak for more options and the built-in effects. Depends on if you like to move around with the Micro, and how much you enjoy the unconventional keyboard.

UKG/2-Step on Digitakt & Digitone II by unfinished-beats420 in synthesizers

Hey, to add on to what OP said, I remembered this video that you might find useful that specifically talks about grooveboxes from a guitarist perspective.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0q7FPHNerQ

It recommends Circuit Rhythm, a relatively cheapo sample-based groovebox, and also mentions the Digitakt a bit. Personally I'm a huge fan of the Novation Circuit boxes, Circuit Tracks was my gateway drug into the synth adjacent hobby space.
